The 'small enhancements' are actually pretty large. I mean, nothing that truly sets the gameplay apart from previous versions, but at least I don't feel like I'm playing last year's title this time around, something I've felt for the last few years.

Picked up the version for dat tree sitty

I think I'll hold out my sports game fix for NHL '09. That looks like it's got a better feature set going for it.

Actually, your post reminded me to reserve a copy. Save for the soundtrack, I liked NHL08 over 2k8 - which shocked the hell out of me.

TIGER WOODS'09 in two weeks... :d

The only sports game I ever buy is Tiger Woods. Sometimes NHL games but I only pick up football games when they drop in price.

I don't know why but those games are addicting. I was a little disappointed in last years outing, so hopefully this years is better (which it seems so far.)

the one thing that still bothers me about ALL sports games is the crowd. takes all the hard work right out of the game when they show a clip of the crowd and you see the same dude 5 times. what's worse is there's only 10 dudes in the clip! takes the "realism" right out of it.

Never, EVER listen to 1Up for sports game reviews. EVER. They simply DON'T KNOW SPORTS GAMES.

Small enhancements, like... no CPU slider. Woo!

Tremendously bad AI, etc. You'll see receivers with 2000+ yards over a season, running backs who can't run, blockers who can't block, etc.

Over at www.operationsports.com, the developers are actually stating that they know that Madden is a mess and are asking how they could improve the game for 10.

When it comes to sports game reviews, trust people who specialize in them, like Bill Abner. Who actually care about AI, gameplay, realism, etc.

How about outsourcing their physics engine and adopting Euphoria?

Fat chance this is EA, they care about the monies and innovation is second fiddle.

That's funny . . . their review is the opposite of what you are claiming: http://www.operationsports.com/review.php?id=431

"Madden NFL 2009 is the best version of Madden that I’ve played in a long time."

"The series made a larger leap between 08 and 09 than in any version before . . . ."

"There will still be people in the world who will scream “BROKEN!” from the rooftops to anyone who will listen, and I can’t do anything about that. What I can do is say that Madden NFL 09 is the complete package."

Wow. Someone sounds a bit butt-hurt that a game he hates is actually good.

Um, you know that article talks about bad the game's AI, etc is, right?

"The best Madden in years" is a meaningless statement when the previous versions have been utter dreck. (laugh)

"Inevitably, anybody with an ounce of skill will have “All-Madden” skill level assigned for his or her user rushing difficulty. My wife and 8-year-old son both scored top marks in the rushing offense test, and I guarantee you they couldn’t run on All-Pro difficulty, even with Walter Payton behind the Hogs’ offensive line. When an 8-year-old is being assigned All Madden simply because he can play Simon Says, something is wrong there."

No sliders? Bad AI in blocking, bad rushing, bad receivers?

Abner said that the game is built strictly for player-vs-player with no thought given to AI.

Pass. When they get it right - or better yet, ISSUE A PC VERSION - PASS.

So, Jonah, you tell us to go read the reviews from "trust people who specialize in them" and then tell us to ignore them when their opinion conflicts with yours?

Yes, I saw the part about the AI problems, which is why I included the third quote. But apparently, you didn't read the whole article:

"If I had a CPU QB accuracy slider, I could try to tone down the surgical precision that the CPU passers have, and ****yet at the same time, the game still plays rather well without it****."

I never claimed the game didn't have problems. It seems that all games have them, especially EA. But going to the game site YOU recommended, they think the game is actually a great game to play, even against the CPU.

There are always genre geeks that find copious faults with a game, but that doesn't mean it's a crappy game. In the gamut of crappy (Daiktana or Lair) to excellent (Super Mario Galaxy or GTA IV) games, I think Madden 09 is a lot closer to the latter.

You realize that EA has also already announced that their first two Madden 09 patches will address issues, like adding the sliders?

"It may not look all that different to the casual observer, but football aficionados and Madden veterans alike will be able to appreciate the small enhancements."
Translation: Its the same game with 1 new feature and roster updates. And they still give it a fucking 8.8.
Fuck madden.

EA still can't figure out how to animate the fingers of the quarterbacks so it appears like they're actually holding the football.
Maybe Madden 2021....

I mentioned that in a post a few days ago. I think it's funny how the ball is always an inch off of their hands. Like they have some sort of magnetic field inbetween them.

Ps. Hope you enjoy Carson Palmer going 40 for 44, with 375 yards, 3 TD, 0 INT against you.
