The video is packed with some of the most controller destroying titles in memory. Pretty sure many of you out there can join us in a moment of silence for all the friendships ruined over playing Battletoads co-op during the hoverbike level. Check out the video after the break.
GameTrailers' list of most difficult games

As Bionic Commando Rearmed's release reminded us today: Many games are just difficult by design. Gametrailers apparently had some prescience about our feelings on the subject and yesterday released a video featuring its list of most difficult games.
The video is packed with some of the most controller destroying titles in memory. Pretty sure many of you out there can join us in a moment of silence for all the friendships ruined over playing Battletoads co-op during the hoverbike level. Check out the video after the break.

Maybe actually watch the video beyond the first Seven seconds... Portal isn't on the list.

First comment isn't "YES! THIS IS COMBAT FROGS!"? I'm ashamed of you all.

I'm sorry, but Battletoads on the GameBoy kicked my ass.

Pretty good list.
I'd probably put Dragon Quest VIII at number 11. Always been my favorite JRPG series, but VIII was maddening in it's difficulty.

Wow... nice list. I feel kinda good, actually. I have beated most of those games, except Shinobi (I haven't played it) and Battletoads.
In fact, I finished Ninja Gaiden I and II a couple weeks ago, on the Virtual Console. I hate the eagles.

Sometimes it feels like no one played the XBLA version of Alien Hominid. Not a Top 10, but definitely one of the hardest games I've played.

Well, I have the Gamecube version... I have beated the game, but I don't know how much different from the Live Arcade is.
If you want a really good challenge, buy Switchball on Live Arcade. The gold medal in all the stages achievement is my most proud one...
... very hardcore.

Al, have you played any of the remakes, such as Jet Set Willy PC ( http://retrospec.sgn.net/game/jsw ) or Jet Set Willy Online ( http://jsw.ovine.net/ ). Yeah you heard right, a JSW MMO!

I played Battletoads all the time as a kid, and yet 90% of the levels in that video I've never seen before. I certainly wasn't a lightweight (as I beat two other games on that list, Ninja Gaiden and Castlevania, before I was 7), but apparently Battletoads kicked my ass completely.
It's interesting to note that no footage was shown from Ghosts to Glory, although technically they put the whole series at number 2. That game IMO was tougher than Super GnG, simply because continues were so much rarer (and saves were often 1.5 hours apart).

Robo Cop 3 for the SNES was the hardest game that I've ever played.

I second a vote for Robocop 3 for the SNES. I've owned it since it came out and I've never made it to the second level! I'm pretty sure there isn't EVEN a second level.

I suck at most games, so that list is probably 10 of like a million that I failed in.
But somehow they are all still fun, especially Etrian Odyssey and Shiren the Wanderer, you'd think after dying the 50th time you would give up... but not me lol.

If you mastered the slide, 5 was a cakewalk. The entire Metal Slug series can pretty much be figured out through repetition / memorization. All except the final bosses, I don't think I've ever beaten the final bosses on 3 and 5 without continuing at least 476 times.

The top three games on this list were on the NES, and I would also throw in the original Mega Man. I think this list tries to take games that are considered a good challenge. There's a difference between a game that's remembered as bringing a tough challenge with a great reward, then a game that's just annoying. And even though a lot of those NES games hold up, I think that a lot of them would be easier nowadays with tighter controls. There are a lot of games that are tougher than some games on this list, but are really awful.
Is ET considered one of the hardest videogames ever?

ET is hard because nobody wants to keep playing it. It's like extreme self-torture... ultimate hardcore-ness.

my roommate can walk through battletoads. it makes me physically ill.
We both agree however that there is a harder game that came out for the NES - Robowarrior. If you ever want to play an absolutely frustrating game, look no further. think of bomberman with a time limit and a hidden goal. I don't know what the developers were thinking.

Ok can anyone tell me the difference between Battletoads Genesis and NES? Cause I played the Genesis one as a kid. Was it just as hard?

I used to LOVE Robowarrior. The NES version was near impossible. Makes me wonder if I'd do better playing it as an adult.
Did you ever play the version for the GameBoy? MUCH easier but still pretty difficult. I actually completed that one when I was a kid.
