Rumor: Mega Man 9 Achievements are evil
If there's one thing you'll see a lot during your stroll through Mega Man 9's trap-laden, pit-filled and exceedingly deadly memory lane, it's the poor little robot boy exploding into a booming bloom of pulsating energy. Unfortunately, there appears to be no achievement for dying one billion times -- at least not in the list of in-game gongs posted by Inside MGC.
So, how about beating the game without dying? Or without using energy tanks? How confident are you about defeating every boss using only the standard buster ... or without taking damage? Well, it looks like we'll be going for the WiiWare version of the game after all. We just can't deal with Capcom giving us a retro-wrapped gift with one hand and plucking Xbox 360 Achievements (or PSN Trophies?) out of our grasp with the other. Those meanies!

At least you can still play it with all the glitches...
McWeen @ Aug 13th 2008 9:13AM
Don't hard achievements make them actual achievements worth showing off and not just meaningless points on your game card showing you have less of and outside life than others?
VerticalEvent @ Aug 13th 2008 9:27AM
This is one comment I can get behind.
*gasp* Achievements that are actually... achievements!
Vcize @ Aug 13th 2008 9:31AM
There's a fine line between hard and annoying though. Typically, something that is difficult/frustrating is fine within a self contained space, but that line is crossed (in many people's view) when that difficult thing is not only difficult, but requires playing through the whooooooolllleee game over and over and over again.
Vcize @ Aug 13th 2008 9:32AM
However, I'm saying that as someone that never played Mega Man 9. So I have no idea if those achievements are actually as difficult as they sound or not.
Noshino @ Aug 13th 2008 10:19AM
for the real hardcore and people that are familiar with the MM series, most of those are doable except for this one...
Invincible
Clear the game without dying. 30
It would simply take way too much practice, I don't really see it happen for at least 3 months after release
arrrgh @ Aug 13th 2008 11:07AM
truth.
beating the game without dying 3 times or something i could see as BARELY possible....
not dying once? that should be classified as an act of God
Noshino @ Aug 13th 2008 11:18AM
yah, it would be way too many moves to memorize, but like I said, it isn't really impossible, its just goddamn too hard
samfish @ Aug 13th 2008 11:51AM
I guarantee someone will do it in less than a week.
Roto13 @ Aug 13th 2008 1:06PM
You have to remember that this game is going to be pretty short. It won't be hard to memorize the tricky parts.
kftgr @ Aug 13th 2008 3:44PM
@Noshino:
3 months?!? Dude, you are a disgrace to your Japanese sounding name. There's probably a Rockman otaku creaming himself right now at the thought of crushing those achievements in less than a week.
koehler83 @ Aug 13th 2008 9:21AM
Everything on that list are things I accomplished in Megaman 2, 3 and 4 when I was like 10. (Except maybe the 5 times in one day... I wouldnt have seen a point in doing that.)
All 8 bosses with the Mega Buster? No problem.. was planning on doing that anyway.
Kill a boss without getting hit? No problem, just use the right weapon and that's butter.
Gamers today.. lazy lazy bastards.. especially the kids. The only real challenge is the entire game in an hour. That's rough.
bvhj @ Aug 13th 2008 9:21AM
Haha, that Gamer’s Day achievement is great
Dustin @ Aug 14th 2008 3:20AM
I imagine that achievement will be hackable by setting the system clock back just before you play each consecutive game
WRE @ Aug 13th 2008 9:31AM
I'm probably getting it on WiiWare only because the Wii is the only console sporting a D-pad that's worth a damn. I just can't do side-scrollers with the analog stick; it feels unnatural to me.
vidGuy @ Aug 13th 2008 9:34AM
Seconded. Achievements don't mean much to me so I'll go with the version that's going to control the best, and I'm really liking the VC controller for this one.
Obie @ Aug 13th 2008 9:51AM
I concur. The classic controller D-pad is the best of the bunch. That's why I enjoy the VC street fighters game best so far.
Solid Chief @ Aug 13th 2008 10:08AM
Hey the 360's dpad is great too!

koehler83 @ Aug 13th 2008 10:27AM
You think Nintendo offers a better D-Pad than the PS3?
I say you need to go see a doctor or pass me whatever it you're smoking.
Though I will agree that if your options are Nintendo or Xbox, Nintendo wins. Xbox loses.
Noshino @ Aug 13th 2008 10:29AM
I actually prefer the DualShock's d-pad over all the other ones...
For some reason I always end up with calluses from the d-pad of Nintendo controllers ._.
eilegz @ Aug 13th 2008 10:38AM
i prefer nintendo d pad, the snes one was the best, playing fighting game on a ps1 and ps2 was a pain, at least with ps3 the new sixaxxis was better.
Fernando Rocker @ Aug 13th 2008 10:40AM
Nintendo cross d-pad is actually one of the best digitail pads out there.
Way better than the segmented Sony d-pad.
If you think that a segmented d-pad is better than the cross Nintendo patented and exclusive d-pad, you are clearly the one who needs to see a doctor.
WRE @ Aug 13th 2008 10:41AM
Different strokes, I guess. I've never liked the PlayStation D-pad; it always seemed...incomplete. And I could buy it on the PS3, but that seems like too much of a compromise: 2nd best D-pad and 2nd best gamerscore-type experience. Like vidguy said, achievements don't mean much to me so I'll stick with the WiiWare version since the classic controller definitely has the best d-pad this gen. Though it is surprising that Koehler83 prefers a Sony product...
Fernando Rocker @ Aug 13th 2008 10:45AM
I made my decision weeks ago, and I will buy it both the WiiWare and Live Arcade version, because I want to play with the remote in the NES configuration, and Live Arcade because I want the achivements.
And the only reason why other companies don't use a cross d-pad, is because only Nintendo can use that desing. If it wasn't patented, every other company will use that design.
Segmented d-pad like the Sony products is terrible, specially for diagonals.
samfish @ Aug 13th 2008 10:48AM
That's how you know you're hardcore, Noshino.
I remember the olden days of going to school with blisters on our thumbs and Mega Man and Mario on our minds! Those were the days...those were the days...
eilegz @ Aug 13th 2008 10:53AM
completely agree with fernando i really hate the segmented d-pad, too bad this gen nintendo there its not too much games that use the d-pad now its all about waggle
Fernando Rocker @ Aug 13th 2008 10:58AM
eilegz
To be fair, not a lot of games in every other platform uses the d-pad to control the character anymore. It acts more like 4 extra buttons. Same with the Wii, to select weapons, etc.
But also, is the console current console that uses the d-pad more. I have like 18 VC games, and for a lot of games (NES games, Master System, etc) all those games uses the remote sideways.
Same with the DS.
Noshino @ Aug 13th 2008 11:05AM
A man wears a scar as a medal! Not to say I couldn't win unhurt!
Yah, everyone used to show off their calluses at school as a sign of being a hardcore gamer, well, it was either that or a claw hand, goddamn arcades of yore...
Fernando, both Nintendo and Sony have their d-pads patented, and I actually find it much easier to handle the DS's d-pad (yes, even the diagonals.
I don't know how you guys praise the design of the 360's analog stick and triggers yet complain about the DS's d-pad, it has the best design of the bunch...
Wiinterfang @ Aug 13th 2008 11:08AM
Were? that still happen to me and I'm in college.
arrrgh @ Aug 13th 2008 11:11AM
sony's segmented dpad is bearable...xbox's joke of a dpad is...well a joke.
But nintendo clearly comes out on top in terms of functionality. Maybe it's because we all were trained on the original NES and then SNES dpad for so many years it just seems to respond more accurately.
Vcize @ Aug 13th 2008 11:19AM
Well, count me in as one who HEAVILY prefers the PS3's awesome d-pad.
It's really the only reason I ever even consider any multi-platform games on that console.
j.howlett @ Aug 13th 2008 11:35AM
i find the sony's segmented d-pad makes for easier transitions. it's really a whole piece when you take the controller apart and it's pressure sensitive.
Donald @ Aug 13th 2008 12:07PM
I love Nintendo's d-pad as it's more responsive and feels natural. But I find the PS3 one bearable, it's not horrible, but if it wasn't segmented it would be better. And the 360's d-pad is a hard to control piece of shit. I'd rip my eyes out if I had to control Mega Man with that thing.
On a side note I also find the analog sticks for the 360 to be absolute shit. Every game the character feels clunky and like he's a giant balloon. ESPECIALLY when it's 3rd person. Give me the Gamecube analog stick any day. And whenever you have to tap the A button repeatedly on the 360 (damn you WWE games) you get a cramp within 5 seconds. (I own a 360 so don't think I just hate the system, it's just a bad design for a controller.)
So WiiWare it is for me!
Roto13 @ Aug 13th 2008 1:08PM
"Hey the 360's dpad is great too!"
Hah, no. Though I don't see anything particularly wrong with the Dualshock 3 D-pad.
I'm going to be getting the Wii version. I can't resist playing it with a controller that's shaped like a NES controller. :P
John Z @ Aug 13th 2008 9:40AM
I like many others am torn between the WiiWare version (for the D-Pad) and the XBLA version (for those sweet, sweet gamerpoints).
I just wanted to point out that this is the first I've seen of the boss sprites, too, and they are suitably awesome.
Ghaleon @ Aug 13th 2008 9:55AM
Do we have to see posts everywhere about how hard the achievements are BOO HOO. Achivements must be stupid easy in other games for a MM (not very hard once you spend some time with them) to get all this bitching.
Dovi @ Aug 13th 2008 10:06AM
"Defeat the 8 Bosses with the Mega Buster."
Wouldn't that just mean you'd have to land the finishing blow with the buster?
Shwan @ Aug 13th 2008 10:37AM
well i think making this game have hard achievements is keeping true to the nature of older games. all old games got really hard and this is no different.
eilegz @ Aug 13th 2008 11:03AM
For some reason i really hate the attitude of third parties in treating wii users as a third world country citizen, first we have this game exclusive, then when multiplatform, it suppose to have the same game in all 3 console, but now wii receive a gimped version of the game... Its amazing how this thing turn out. sucks to be old school nintendo fan looking for more good games.
Fernando Rocker @ Aug 13th 2008 11:11AM
Gimped version?
Is the same version, the only diference are the achivements, and they are mandatory in every 360 game.
Noshino @ Aug 13th 2008 11:17AM
yah really, even if the PSN version was to get trophies, how is it that not having achievements/trophies to brag about (when the Wii doesn't even have that system to begin with) makes the game gimped? Hell, if you want you could very well try to achieve those goals, do you really need to make them public?
eilegz @ Aug 13th 2008 11:33AM
its still a "feature", that wii dont have.
I wont be surprised if they make ps3 and xbox360 version look better on HD system
samfish @ Aug 13th 2008 11:56AM
Aye, that's something you'd wanna talk to Nintendo over, not Capcom.
I don't personally care about achievements. Usually when I play a game, I just play it to beat it and when I accomplish that, I'm done with it. There are exceptions, but they're pretty few and far between.
eilegz @ Aug 13th 2008 12:31PM
making a wii version a gimped one would affect the sales for the wiiware version, and then capcom have a good excuse to said that they rather throw us shovelware that sell than real games just look the spyborg and neopets thing.
btw capcom still dont give us a good reason of why NO bionic comando for wii, other than its NINTENDO FAULT.
all this mega man 9 for live arcade right now seems to be the best version...
Noshino @ Aug 13th 2008 1:27PM
"1UP: What about the original Bionic Commando for Virtual Console?
BJ: We couldn't get it approved for the Virtual Console.
1UP: Is that because of the whole Nazi thing?
BJ: I can't say why. I can just say that we tried to get it to work. We're huge fans of the game. When you think about it, it totally makes sense as a strategy to have the original game out there in some format that people can play and see what was so great about it. But we were told no."
Thing is, the NA version did not have the Nazis so it really could not have been that...probably space?
Mr.ESC @ Aug 13th 2008 11:29AM
I got those in Megaman Powered up! and I got nothing at least this time I get to increase my Epenis lol.
(Coffee Break,Easy mode FTW)
Jimiisama @ Aug 13th 2008 12:47PM
If you don't like the, don't do them. People used to make up their own achievements to make the games they play repeatedly more interesting. Like starting weapon only (many games), no sphere grid (FFX), don't fire weapons (many games), don't get caught, walk backwards the whole time, melee weapons only, etc. Achievements are good for people without originality.
Jimiisama @ Aug 13th 2008 12:48PM
Or people who feel the need to show off their achievements. Personal satisfaction from playing the game should really be enough; if not you can always post a video.
frozengod @ Aug 13th 2008 1:14PM
They could go further by introducing meta achievements:
"Bot
Get 9 achievements in one go
Bragging Rights and an amount of G that should be superfluous by now"
deaftly @ Aug 13th 2008 1:44PM
I hope Mega Maid is the final boss.
