Star Trek Online FAQ hints at cross-platform play
It's the first question everyone has when confronted with an MMO targeted for both PCs and consoles: "Will console and PC players be on the same servers?" Lucky for us, the MMO nerds at Cryptic expected your (frankly) predictable inquiry and met it with the following response, helpfully contained on Star Trek Online's official FAQ page: "We would like that to be the case. There is nothing technologically keeping us from making it so." The more astute amongst you will undoubtedly taken note note that the above response is not technically the same as "yes" but it perhaps gets us one step closer to having an MMO besides Final Fantasy XI that actually plays across platforms.
Until then, we'll toss Star Trek Online into the same pile as other MMOs that are considering cross-platform play but have yet to actually deliver it: The Agency, DC Universe Online, Age of Conan, and Cryptic's own Champions Online. Wanna make it off that list, Cryptic? Make it so.

No fucking way this is gonna happen.
Do I even need to explain why?
Spallit @ Aug 14th 2008 2:31AM
Please do explain why? :) If you're refering to the mouse keyboard vs. controller argument, I don't see how it has any bearing in an MMO RPG.
Jakka (Not sure why he got banned?) @ Aug 13th 2008 4:01PM
If I'm referring to that...and I am,I'd like to point out that every self-respecting gamer usually maps half of his keyboard to various macros and shortcuts to make his gameplay far more efficient.
Now throw him against a console player in PvP or during a high-level raids. In the first case he'll be pwnzored and in the other he'll be a burden to the rest of the group.
matthew_neitzer @ Aug 13th 2008 4:13PM
So, then, this would be the perfect oppurtunity for them to use keyboard support on the PS3. They did it in UT3, and the only buggy thing was the mouse (Ok it was the most important thing to playing, but it was just a little slow)
Jakka (Not sure why he got banned?) @ Aug 13th 2008 4:21PM
Yeah but hardly anyone uses keyboard. So the actual game will still be made in mind with the 99% of gamers that use their controllers instead.
And what about 360 owners?
motorer @ Aug 13th 2008 4:22PM
FFXI is cross platform - I've played on both the PC and PS2, and there is no difference in play at all. Gamepad + Keyboard is all you need. It also has an extensive macro system built in.
Nuno Sousa @ Aug 14th 2008 3:12PM
Actually, the xbox360 does have keyboard support. Usually anywhere where you have to enter text you can plug in a USB keyboard and type away. Developers have confirmed that they can use the keyboard in-game, they just don't want to.

"We would like that to be the case. There is nothing technologically keeping us from making it so."
I wonder if they meant to say "make it so" in their FAQ or if they've just watched so many episode of Next Gen during development it just slips out all the time.

So do Star Trek geeks still get angry over the concept of a black Vulcan?
'cause I remember when Voyager came out and had a black Vulcan and hoo boy...
Tez (PSN: Tezasaurus) @ Aug 13th 2008 3:58PM
All geeks get angry over stupid shit in their geeky genre of choice.
But as a non-Star Trek geek, why should there not be black Vulcans?
Jakka (Not sure why he got banned?) @ Aug 13th 2008 4:03PM
Duh!
...because Vulcan represent Jewish people.Ever seen a black Jew?
Bad Mojo @ Aug 13th 2008 4:28PM
And you bet your arse I'll be the first one to create some blasphemous trek wrecker that ever graced the space ways for just that reason :)
Mr Khan @ Aug 13th 2008 5:03PM
I didn't care, Tuvok just came as a surprise. Not a particularly neat one, but not unwelcome
I couldn't imagine trekkies having crossover with racists anyway, could you?
Jamesonite @ Aug 13th 2008 5:50PM
I was under the impression that Bajorans were supposed to represent the Jews. You know the occupation of Bajor, religion as a unifying force, regularly marginalized, and so on. I thought Vulcans were supposed to be a representation of the Ancient Greeks reason and enlightenment over decadence and passion. But whatever like it really matters.
Turkish Superman @ Aug 13th 2008 3:41PM
It'll never happen.
Sora @ Aug 13th 2008 3:42PM
"Wanna make it off that list, Cryptic? Make it so. "
Careful how you word it; they could also make it off that list by stopping to consider cross-platform play at all.

Hey, I'm a new MMO in the same market as WoW, and look, they gave me this smashing red uniform, too!
