Burnout Paradise coming to PSN this fall
In what could be the sign of the start of a really interesting paradigm shift in the industry, EA announced that its smash-em-up driving hit Burnout Paradise will be arriving on PSN this fall for $29.99. Those are pretty much all the details available right now, but we can't help but be captivated by the possibilities.
Is this going to be a new trend, offering up titles via PSN that have lost some of their retail luster? Because, honestly, we've braved numerous excursions outside of our living rooms, and anything we can do to keep those to an absolute minimum is truly appreciated.
Oh, and GameStop? This is how it begins.

Wow...even though I'd rather have a disc copy...this is still good news. And with all the Free DLC they keep adding...people are going to HAVE to purchase this game.
And at half price? It's a steal.
Oh, and BTW, the last line is gold.
Replica23 @ Aug 14th 2008 7:50PM
Fuckin' eh it was gold! :D
Phil @ Aug 14th 2008 7:57PM
Seriously, best article zinger all day.
Gamestop should watch out. Give Microsoft time and they'll figure out a way to start selling games via Live BESIDES just originals and Arcade games.
...And I wouldn't be surprised if EA made some deal with Valve to get Steam working for certain devices. Downloadable Orange Box anyone?
I'd KILL for that.
Dirty @ Aug 14th 2008 4:36PM
Death to Gamestop!!!
MC Double Def DP @ Aug 14th 2008 4:50PM
Gamestop is already dead to me.
Nick the Hero of Canton @ Aug 14th 2008 5:46PM
Is it true that GameStop sells used games as new? Because I haven't had any problems until recently when I bought a game new and the disc looked used.
reiji @ Aug 15th 2008 2:42AM
Yes, Nick. It's common practice for GameStop stores to "check-out" games to employees and then turn around and sell them as new. I've heard plenty of stories of people buying "New" DS games with save files on them.
Overall, I think the download thing is a good idea as long as they keep the price really low. Also, if this is the way things are going, Sony needs to let us create folders in the XMB to categorize our downloaded games.
Tez (PSN: Tezasaurus) @ Aug 15th 2008 3:52AM
You can.
Noshino @ Aug 14th 2008 4:37PM
So...
Atari made profits
Gamestop is losing ground
EA trying to make more money...
yup, the end is near
Jack @ Aug 14th 2008 5:47PM
I think you gotta replace the EA statement with...
EA publishing ORIGINAL titles...
Moffka @ Aug 14th 2008 4:37PM
While PC games have been doing this for a long time. This is the first full fledged console game I've heard of doing this. While I enjoy having physical copies of games. I still hope this becomes a trend for developers. I'll be needing a bigger hard drive though! :D
BPM [MSN: BPMdotEXE @ hotmail.com] @ Aug 14th 2008 5:09PM
What about SIREN: Blood Curse/New Translation? While it is only being released via PSN in North America, both Europe and Japan have Blu-ray versions of it, too.
BPM [MSN: BPMdotEXE @ hotmail.com] @ Aug 14th 2008 5:10PM
Oh, and Warhawk was available on PSN, too, I believe.
john @ Aug 14th 2008 5:20PM
I've been waiting to buy this game, especially now that it's down to $30. Microsoft needs to jump on this trend. I'm guessing that the fall update's 'rip game to disc' ability is the first step.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Aug 14th 2008 4:42PM
This game is a such a ridiculous deal. It was well worth it at $60. At $30 (current price) its up for deal of the year.
Dr. Stabbingworth @ Aug 14th 2008 9:51PM
Well, eventually I'll be able to buy it used for $15 and get a disc/box/instructions. Not sure how this is a great deal.
Jettic @ Aug 15th 2008 12:31AM
It's a great deal because it's currently the best you can currently, get.. simple
Duke @ Aug 14th 2008 4:52PM
This is a nice thing to see happening.
Right now a tear is falling down the cheek of someone at GameStop...
...and no, I don't need to preorder Horsie Friends 6 on the Wii.
Dirty @ Aug 14th 2008 4:58PM
Its probably that fat punk who tried to make me get the limited edition of Fable to get the pub games. If it isnt him crying I will go make him.
I really hate dealing with those people, they are like geeks but really stupid.
tifosiotaku @ Aug 14th 2008 4:54PM
I was considering getting this game, but not having to deal with discs is great. I'll wait for the PSN download and get it that way.
Zertoss @ Aug 14th 2008 4:54PM
Awesome idea, but PSN downloads take FOREVER for me. I wish I could run a CAT6 cable to it, but I'm not running one across the floor, and I can't drill holes in my apartment's walls.
AlterEgo @ Aug 14th 2008 4:58PM
Sure you can.
No one has to know...
deaftly @ Aug 14th 2008 5:24PM
I have mine wired in and downloads are still pretty slow for me :\
nick @ Aug 14th 2008 4:56PM
I can't imagine EA not presenting this [to Microsoft] as an option for XBLA as well. We're already seen full fledged Xbox games appear on Live, why not brand new games?
Digital distribution... I don't think it's a matter of IF, I think it's just a matter of WHEN.
skidawg @ Aug 14th 2008 5:04PM
it's because of microsoft's imposed size limit. They made a minor exception with the Street Fighter HD, but this one would be way too big. Kinda shooting themselves in the foot there I would say.
Ninjakamster (PS360 FTW!) @ Aug 14th 2008 5:05PM
What about Soul Calibur? Isn't it around $250 megs on XBL?
Dirty @ Aug 14th 2008 5:15PM
THE FUTURE IS NOW!!
Steve @ Aug 14th 2008 5:16PM
You can fit a whole 3 games on a Xbox360 premium, before you have to pay Microsoft megabucks for a HDD upgrade, which then allows you to install perhaps 12 games maximum...
What a con. I don't care, my PS3 has a 300GB HDD in there, and I will move to a bigger one once the tech allows and price has dropped...
360 is for losers who enjoy shopping at gamestop..
Duke @ Aug 14th 2008 5:35PM
No, Steve isn't a total fanboy jackass. Noooooo
skidawg @ Aug 14th 2008 7:22PM
oh steve....
i'm as anti 360 as they come, but i'm a logical 360 hater. please don't judge us all by guys like steve.
tmacairjordan87 @ Aug 14th 2008 4:57PM
Between whatever this will be in size (it's likely going to be huge) and the 9 GB from Siren, my 60 GB would cry if I got those games.
Maurice M @ Aug 14th 2008 5:08PM
It fit on a DVD for 360, so it'll likely be around the size of Siren or smaller.
anonim1979 @ Aug 14th 2008 7:47PM
Burnout Paradise ISO is
**3.5 GB on PS3**
practicaly the same as Unreal Tournament 3.
Long live Blue Ray propaganda!
tmacairjordan87 @ Aug 14th 2008 8:39PM
Blu ray propaganda? A multiplatform game can only be as big as the 360 allows it to, so the devs can only fit I believe 8GB. It has nothing to do with sony lying about blu ray, the devs had to fit their game on a maximum of 8GB and what they came with was well along those lines.
If 360 had equal storage we'd see most games probably in the 30GB range. No one's going to work harder and put more stuff in one version than another if they both come out at the same time.
tmacairjordan87 @ Aug 14th 2008 8:42PM
I meant to add the same goes with the PC, which Unreal Tournament 3 also came out on the same time as PS3. There's no PC game that I'm aware of that is 50GB in size, so the devs had to work with a similar situation as the 360.
arrrgh @ Aug 14th 2008 5:10PM
Good thing for xbox is all i can say ;)
If this game took "full advantage of blu ray" there would be no way they would release it on PSN. Download a 50gb game? daaamn
Competition is truly a great thing for everyone :)
Underlines @ Aug 14th 2008 5:36PM
Wait...what? I think your trying to spin so hard you are getting dizzy.
AlterEgo @ Aug 14th 2008 6:14PM
wut?
Sheppy (of the Fidlious Clan of Wong) @ Aug 14th 2008 7:00PM
It's a multiplatform release which means to make it work on 360, the game had to be under 6.5GBs. BluRay means dick in multiconsole releases... or as the intelligent would say "All BluRay means is if 360 got Siren, it would be a two disc game."
Tim The Enchanter @ Aug 15th 2008 11:39AM
No, textures and such are uncompressed on the PS3 version. That's why BR was a better version. But he's right, with this download, I doubt they'll keep the game files uncompressed. Not that it makes THAT much of a difference anyway.
Shafnitz @ Aug 14th 2008 5:14PM
I hope MS is paying attention. I would sell my disc copy and download the game from Xbox Live in a second if it was available...
Nate @ Aug 14th 2008 5:22PM
Totally freakin' brilliant. They can have it on the Playstation store for free, without having to ship it to resellers, and it'll be within reach of most of the owners of the system it runs on. I might be too lazy to go get it from the store, and I might not see it in the back of the discount section, but if it's sitting there on the PSN I may well take a look.
And personally, I love downloadable games. I almost never sell games anyway, so not having a disk is just a bonus.
Dwag @ Aug 14th 2008 5:23PM
Watch Gamestop start adding DDL PC games. Just watch gamestop can't be defeated.
ravenfury @ Aug 14th 2008 8:39PM
They already sell downloadable pc games
Dwag @ Aug 15th 2008 10:55PM
I didn't know I never buy from them.
Nate @ Aug 14th 2008 5:24PM
Btw, a 320 gig hard drive for your PS3 now only costs $99:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152111
Booya.
atrimus @ Aug 14th 2008 5:37PM
and just think, for $80 more i can buy a hdd for my 360 that barely has a third of the space.
Dwag @ Aug 14th 2008 5:25PM
MS needs to learn from Sony.
Copying is the only way companies can live on nowadays.
The Rabbid @ Aug 14th 2008 5:33PM
My prediction: Very soon sports games will be directly through PSN and XBL.
Logic Bus @ Aug 14th 2008 5:37PM
I hope this shows up on XBL. For $30 and all the DLC, I'd get it.
