In what could be the sign of the start of a really interesting paradigm shift in the industry, EA announced that its smash-em-up driving hit Burnout Paradise will be arriving on PSN this fall for $29.99. Those are pretty much all the details available right now, but we can't help but be captivated by the possibilities.
Is this going to be a new trend, offering up titles via PSN that have lost some of their retail luster? Because, honestly, we've braved numerous excursions outside of our living rooms, and anything we can do to keep those to an absolute minimum is truly appreciated.
Oh, and GameStop? This is how it begins.

I hope they wait until the next generation of consoles to start this up. My 360 HDD is already almost full. >_

My problem with this is that I could go 5 minutes down the street to target, and get a disc copy that will last forever for the same price.

If I could buy a pizza that lasts forever for the same price at the store, then I'd never buy pizza again.

Yeah a pizza is a really bad analogy.
Now if buying something digitally meant dling the ISO so I could burn my own physical copy of it, I'd be all for it, but unfortunately theres no service that does that.

So what does this mean for future PS3 games that are downloaded over the PSN? Little to no load times? Sweet!

pretty smart move. still, i think i'm gonna go with the disc version, especially since it's cheap now. a 60gig hdd can only go so far with games like MGS4, GTA IV, Assassin's Creed and Oblivion clogging it up with mandatory installs.

its a great idea, but with these bigger games, Sony really needs to copy microsoft and let us download stuff when we shut the console off.
I have been working on downloading some stuff on ps3 for a few days now, but when I turn my system off the console just pauses the download. I don't want to have to leave my console on while i'm sleeping/at work to download stuff. At least add in a "shut down when download complete" or something.

Can someone explain how purchases through PSN work? Do they tie games bought to an account, or to your PS3 unit? What happens under the following scenarios?
1) Your PS3 explodes under warranty and they replace your model. Do you get to re-download?
2) You delete the game to make room on your HD for another game and then want to re-install it later.
Basically I'm curious whether they have it set up like Steam (where you can download as many times as you want since purchases are tied to an account, not a machine).

It's tied to your account. Just login on a different PS3, and you can redownload everything from the store. This isn't the 360 were talking about here ;)

i still want the disk for this one, but i like the idea. speaking of gamestop, i just got an e-mail inviting me to the publice SOCOM beta but it says come down to gamestop and preorder and invite 2 friends. its basically an add to preorder that looked like the last beta invite i got. i don't know who to be more angry at, gamestop or PSU

Eh... I'm partial to having a physical copy myself.
But then again, I also want to see the triumphant return of cartridge gaming.

Can someone explain the benefits to ME, the consumer, as to why I'd spend $30 on the PSN download of Burnout Paradise when I can buy a new copy on a disc for the same price?
The download copy is on my PS3 and linked to my PSN account. It's mine, period.
However, I can easily loan my disc copy to any number of my friends (who may or may not go out and purchase the title later). I also can do what I want with the disc, including reselling it via eBay/Craigslist/Gamestop/etc if I desire to do so.
Unless there is some sort of deep discout (ie $30 or $40 PSN download vs. $60 BD disc) for having to part with the physical disc, I can't see a SINGLE benefit for me to choose the digial route over buying an actual disc.
At the very least, the titles offered on the "XBOX Originals" are all out of print new (although I'm sure there's a copy of Psyconauts crying from the back of a WalMart shelf somewhere), but Burnout is still a recent title that can be found at almost any retail outlet that sells games.
