EyeToy: Hero to allow 1:1 swordplay this holiday
SCE London was on hand at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival to show off two new EyeToy games that take advantage of a newfound ability to track specific colors and – as excited as we are about EyeToy: Pom-Pom Party (we don't know what it is) – it's EyeToy: Hero that we're really here to talk about. You see, the first-person game not only comes with a "real toy sword," it promises 1:1 swordplay with that sword by tracking its fluorescent-green foam.
You can use the sword to block enemy attacks, light your way in dark areas, and of course to attack. You'll even have to hide your sword behind your back in those dark areas if you want to avoid detection. Clever! The technology may sound like magic, but it's not without its limitations. Compared to Nintendo's new Wii MotionPlus upgrade, the 1:1 EyeToy tech is limited to two dimensions, has difficulty picking up subtle movements, and probably won't work in the dim light of your parent's basement. You can hit up some more pics and a full rundown of the presentation by clicking on that Source link.

i always dreamed of having a swordfight on the ps3 for real!
sicsided @ Aug 14th 2008 10:58AM
Eye of Judgement, and now this, hopefully it is as cool as they made it out to be back on a demo disc from OPM, for the ps2....
Tegolin @ Aug 14th 2008 10:59AM
Kinda late for a Eyetoy game.
FOXHOUND @ Aug 14th 2008 10:59AM
I wonder if that Amazon deal for the EyeToy w/EYE OF JUDGEMENT is still around... I might end up getting it afterall since I've got two games that use it already, plus the XMB chat I usually do with my younger brother(instead of calling on the phone).
sicsided @ Aug 14th 2008 11:30AM
if you are anywhere near a walmart, look there. I got it for $30, Playstation Eye and Eye of Judgement Bundle. Have only played one game so far, but the weekend is near! Oh, also expect a 2 hour update for eye of judgement.
FOXHOUND @ Aug 14th 2008 12:23PM
Nice! :] Thanks for the heads-up. I'll check after my shift tomorrow.

Jack of No Trades 85 @ Aug 14th 2008 11:06AM
You got banned again? For what? You don't post that often?
The_Punisher @ Aug 14th 2008 11:17AM
LMAO!
i missed the comment :(
Anyway, this looks like i'll finally get use out of my camera. I never bothered to try the ones on the store, any good ones?
Shigeru Miyamoto @ Aug 14th 2008 11:45AM
Who the fuck is Curmeo 2.0 then?
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Aug 14th 2008 11:47AM
No way really? What a fucking shocker!!
Killjebus @ Aug 14th 2008 11:57AM

The Fatass of Kickassness @ Aug 14th 2008 12:31PM
Vegeta and Samfish don't really troll, they just don't share your opinion on shit, Jebus.
Anni @ Aug 14th 2008 12:39PM
Killjebus AND Curmeo? Wait, did I step into a troll timewarp? Is this article from February?
Mr Khan @ Aug 14th 2008 12:41PM
One of the post-E3 out-of-the-woodwork opportunists down: two to go
The Fatass of Kickassness @ Aug 14th 2008 12:56PM
"Is this article from February?"
No, you forgot to take into account Jack's post. It's obviously from October of last year.
samfish @ Aug 14th 2008 1:03PM
Obviously someone has destabilized space-time by going out and collection Chronitons.
Damned atomic super-mutants...
samfish @ Aug 14th 2008 1:04PM

Someday...I will re-read my posts.

For the first time in my life, I literally laughed out loud at an internet comment.
Killjebus @ Aug 14th 2008 1:26PM
Let me finish that sentence for you Mr. Grant

Nevermind, I can't say that without laughing.
Shigeru Miyamoto @ Aug 14th 2008 7:37PM
Well, actually Vegeta and Samfish troll more often than not but their crap usually ends up with 3 hearts because one just randomly hijacks discussion to insult fanboys(but not trolls) while the other is a pervert.
Anam @ Aug 14th 2008 11:06AM
How do you attack if it only tracks two dimensions?
I'm assuming the two dimensions are your left-to-right and top-to-bottom, which would explain how you could block, but if it can't tell whether you're moving the sword forward-to-back then it can't tell if your attacking with it...
...unless there's some way to attack a person with a sword that doesn't involve moving the sword towards them?
why not the LS2LS7? @ Aug 14th 2008 11:23AM
It will determine the location in 3D the same way that Wii Motion Plus determines locations, by using math. This does have some disadvantages with the fact that the camera is 2D, but it has huge advantages in that get its absolute position, so it does not have accumulated dead reckoning errors over time.
Anam @ Aug 14th 2008 11:30AM
I don't know much about Wii Motion Plus, but I'm not following you. How does a 2D camera determine 3D positioning with math?
Wild Bill @ Aug 14th 2008 12:13PM
I'd of thought it'll calculate forward and back by the amount of fluorescent green it detects. The more there is the closer the sword will be to the screen.
This might help explain the science behind it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98hO97ky-sA
Anam @ Aug 14th 2008 12:48PM
Okay, I guess that makes sense. So let me exchange my original question for a new one: if it can detect forward and back motion, then why did the source article say that it had a disadvantage because it was 2D?
Does that just mean that it can't detect forward/back motion reliably or something?
why not the LS2LS7? @ Aug 14th 2008 2:05PM
It's unclear how reliable it will be, it'll have to be augmented by other techniques, like creating smooth path curves based upon physics, just like Wii Motion Plus does.
But in short, the way to tell a sword is not perpendicular to the camera (and thus must be tilted forward or back) is if it appears to grow shorter to the camera, then there's a good chance it is because it is being tipped forward or back.
I doubt it'll be a perfect simulation, but Wii Motion Plus won't be either, dead reckoning has significant limitations.
MrSpaceCowboy @ Aug 14th 2008 11:09AM
Swordplay is all fun and games until someone loses an eye... toy.
Shmil @ Aug 14th 2008 11:11AM
bah thats what they said about light gun games
Blazur @ Aug 14th 2008 11:23AM
LOL...brilliant!
LeadBoxx @ Aug 14th 2008 11:14AM
I wish the 360 was doing more with its camera. This sounds like a fun game.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Aug 14th 2008 11:17AM
To all of you above and joystiq:
EyeToy is a PS2 thing, not PS3. PS3 is "Playstation Eye".
This is a PS2 game it seems.
Christopher Grant @ Aug 14th 2008 11:37AM
My PS3 plays PS2 games, and the EyeToy and Eye both work on it, no?
But yes, this will probably be released as PS2.
Killjebus @ Aug 14th 2008 12:00PM
I hope Lipzig shows us NEW uses for the PSeye. There is so much untapped potential with that device. It continues to puzzle me why Sony does not put more effort into it.
12 NEW announcements Sony....make 'em GOOD.
juju187 @ Aug 14th 2008 11:19AM
Before nintendo?
No Way...
Blazur @ Aug 14th 2008 11:23AM
Somebody please show this to Mr. Lucas.
required @ Aug 14th 2008 11:32AM
Neat and all but I really think that this should be for the PS3 rather than the PS2.
Tehman @ Aug 14th 2008 12:18PM
Looks like a flash game from the look of the screen shots...
Shaq-Fu @ Aug 14th 2008 12:30PM
1:1 motion? Sounds like a gimmick to me

The Fatass of Kickassness @ Aug 14th 2008 12:33PM
Holy shit, my browser's default text + italics = hilarity. I read 'Pom Pom Party' as Eye Toy: Porn Porn Party and had to reread it twice to get it right.
343 Guilty Fart @ Aug 14th 2008 12:48PM
The promise of the Wii, er, PS3 finally fulfilled!
Sora @ Aug 14th 2008 4:08PM
Except this is for PS2.
T @ Aug 14th 2008 2:15PM
How is this "1:1" motion control when it's essentially the EyeToy doing what's been doing all along? The only difference is instead of you flailing your arms wildly for you're waving a very specific peripheral.
If we're calling that 1:1 motion control we might as well add "100% photorealsitic graphics" to the EyeToy scorecard.
Interesting concept, but hardly what I'd consider MotionPlus killer.

I read your bio and some previous postings and I know why you say this things. I am new to this site but I have a feeling that most people here like Wii and 360 but not PS3.
