SCE London was on hand at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival to show off two new EyeToy games that take advantage of a newfound ability to track specific colors and – as excited as we are about EyeToy: Pom-Pom Party (we don't know what it is) – it's EyeToy: Hero that we're really here to talk about. You see, the first-person game not only comes with a "real toy sword," it promises 1:1 swordplay with that sword by tracking its fluorescent-green foam.
You can use the sword to block enemy attacks, light your way in dark areas, and of course to attack. You'll even have to hide your sword behind your back in those dark areas if you want to avoid detection. Clever! The technology may sound like magic, but it's not without its limitations. Compared to Nintendo's new Wii MotionPlus upgrade, the 1:1 EyeToy tech is limited to two dimensions, has difficulty picking up subtle movements, and probably won't work in the dim light of your parent's basement. You can hit up some more pics and a full rundown of the presentation by clicking on that Source link.

I wonder if that Amazon deal for the EyeToy w/EYE OF JUDGEMENT is still around... I might end up getting it afterall since I've got two games that use it already, plus the XMB chat I usually do with my younger brother(instead of calling on the phone).

No, you forgot to take into account Jack's post. It's obviously from October of last year.

Well, actually Vegeta and Samfish troll more often than not but their crap usually ends up with 3 hearts because one just randomly hijacks discussion to insult fanboys(but not trolls) while the other is a pervert.

How do you attack if it only tracks two dimensions?
I'm assuming the two dimensions are your left-to-right and top-to-bottom, which would explain how you could block, but if it can't tell whether you're moving the sword forward-to-back then it can't tell if your attacking with it...
...unless there's some way to attack a person with a sword that doesn't involve moving the sword towards them?

It will determine the location in 3D the same way that Wii Motion Plus determines locations, by using math. This does have some disadvantages with the fact that the camera is 2D, but it has huge advantages in that get its absolute position, so it does not have accumulated dead reckoning errors over time.

I don't know much about Wii Motion Plus, but I'm not following you. How does a 2D camera determine 3D positioning with math?

I'd of thought it'll calculate forward and back by the amount of fluorescent green it detects. The more there is the closer the sword will be to the screen.
This might help explain the science behind it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98hO97ky-sA

Okay, I guess that makes sense. So let me exchange my original question for a new one: if it can detect forward and back motion, then why did the source article say that it had a disadvantage because it was 2D?
Does that just mean that it can't detect forward/back motion reliably or something?

It's unclear how reliable it will be, it'll have to be augmented by other techniques, like creating smooth path curves based upon physics, just like Wii Motion Plus does.
But in short, the way to tell a sword is not perpendicular to the camera (and thus must be tilted forward or back) is if it appears to grow shorter to the camera, then there's a good chance it is because it is being tipped forward or back.
I doubt it'll be a perfect simulation, but Wii Motion Plus won't be either, dead reckoning has significant limitations.

I hope Lipzig shows us NEW uses for the PSeye. There is so much untapped potential with that device. It continues to puzzle me why Sony does not put more effort into it.

How is this "1:1" motion control when it's essentially the EyeToy doing what's been doing all along? The only difference is instead of you flailing your arms wildly for you're waving a very specific peripheral.
If we're calling that 1:1 motion control we might as well add "100% photorealsitic graphics" to the EyeToy scorecard.
Interesting concept, but hardly what I'd consider MotionPlus killer.
