Sony sees LittleBigPlanet's Sackboy as potential mascot material

Long gone are the days when Mario, Sonic, and Crash battled each other in hastily constructed plywood arenas in the dimly lit back corners of edge-of-town warehouses. Now, we've got Sonic and Mario sharing box covers while Crash ... well, at least he's still around.

But don't think the marketing mavens at Sony haven't taken notice of LittleBigPlanet's lovable Sackboy who, as luck would have it, is exclusive to the PS3. "We want LittleBigPlanet to lead the charge into a new genre of gaming and turn Sackboy into the next emblematic character for the PS3," says SCEA's LBP marketing maven Mark Valledor. There are plans that include tiny billboards, exclusive pre-order Sackboys and girls (Kratos and Nariko), plushies and, one can only hope, pajamas with feet.

(I have to say that was a joke, even though it's obvious. Nobody ever understands my humour.)

Kratos would not be a good mascot for Sony, because Kratos stars in M rated games, limiting his marketability (despite the fact that God of War games are amazing). Sackboy, however, can appeal to people of all ages in addition to the fact that he is in a game that is bound to be fantastic (this coming from some one who owns a 360 and Wii, but not a PS3... yet).

I think the Ps3 mascot is MGS' Snake, this character is nice, but customization isn't what makes a cool mascot (unless you got Mickey Mouse).

i am positively suggesting it will not be good. I cannot find a single thing, even sackboy kratos, to buy this game. That isn't helped by the fact that I know almost nothing about the game but not for lack of trying, I've read 3 articles about it just from game informer, and none of them gave any idea what the gameplay would be like, neither have any other news sources ive found

i posted a reply but i cant tell if it showed up or not so ill do it again. I dont think LBP will be good because i know nothing about it, so far ive read 3 game informer articles about it and none of them gave any idea to me what gameplay was about, it was all hype, and to me when a game can get 3 articles just on hype, it will probably be overrated and suck

Argh, I want LittleBigPlanet so bad.. This and Africa. But I just can't make myself spend $300+ for a PS3 just for these games.

Ok seriously. What the fuck makes Africa so goddamn appealing. At first I thought people were just joking but it looks like people are being serious. So tell me what is it that makes you want to drop money for Africa? Cause all it looks to me is a realistic version of Pokemon snap.

I heard a guy talking about that the other day and he said you can get AIDS in Afrika.In retrospective I'm not totally sure if he was talking about the game.

I wish it had the Asian version's name of Hakuna Matata, then I would SO buy it. But Pokemon snap was so goddamn fun, I'll take anything that resembles it even slightly.

Why the hell did this giant enemy crab get downvoted? I think it's reasonable to say that spending at least $400 (not $300) on a PS3 for only two titles is not the most sound decision in this economic slump of ours. Well... this American economic slump... which may not apply if giantenemycrab is not American.

Well it would be nice to see company's start having mascots again besides Nintendo. Apparently I heard Rare wanted to make Banjo Microsoft's mascot.

So the 3 would be Mario,Banjo+Kazzoie,and ......Sackboy

Well they need something with universal appeal. Us and Japan picture the PS3 fairly differently, but LittleBigPlanet has a much more universal appeal for both East and West.

I agree. It definitely is a universal appeal here.

I originally thought that a character from a Final Fantasy game would be a cool mascot, but that's completely out the window now :P

Also, I don't think Kratos has a very friendly appeal, he's more a badass than a mascot.

I miss the good ole' Crash days. Ya know, back when NaughtyDog made it. Such a great game. Then again, I was probably 6 years old at the time so maybe it just seemed more fun at the time. Similar things have happened to me before. I watched Barney yesterday...didn't even shit my pants.

I also had a love affair with Crash Bandicoot! Didn't hurt that it was my first Playstation game. Whenever I think of a good platformer, I think of that original Crash or Spyro.

Original Spyro is still the platformer I use to compare all others to. That game was borderline perfect, in my opinion anyway.

There's a guy on youtube who does Let's Play videos. I watched his narrated playthrough of Crash Bandicoot 3 and I'm happy to report that it really is as awesome as you thought it was:

I was a weird kid... well, I still am at 21 now. I used to have Spyro/Crash go hand in hand with my good ole' Metal Gear Solid. That was some good fun. Even some Twisted Metal 2 in the mix :)

Yeah because is not like Loco Roco would be an excellent mascot...you bastards.

Also I'm pretty sure Crash was their mascot with Parappa and that Cat thing. I’ve always associated the PS brand with the string rabbit thing.

(Loco Roco in a 3D platformer, just give me that)
