Joystiq Podcast 061 - Back to the '70s edition
Wow, this is a talky one. Luckily for you, this more than hour-and-45-minute-long show is just chock-full of content. We've got all the usual features you know and love, a curtailed discussion of cursing, the downloadable game explosion, Geometry Wars 2 protips and, puzzlingly, Chris gets more excited about a game from the early 1970s than a brand new one.
Big ups to JPAG member Danny Lujan for this street-fightin' photoshop. Also, we've got a hit new helper, the Joystiq Killjoy, who fact-checked last weeks' ep. See the results after the jump.

- The art behind BRAID... comes from David Hellman who also does the art for the webcomic A Lesson Is Learned But The Damage Is Irreversible www.alessonislearned.com
- GameTap Editorial... Was reportedly shut down on May 28, 2008
- Shane Kim didnt know about RE5... was a reference to this. Not a mistake but probably should be clarified.

I almost wet myself during that galaga bit.
Justin, again, you are a comedic genius.
syrik zero @ Aug 15th 2008 7:30PM
Agreed! That was amazing!
theturtle363 @ Aug 15th 2008 2:33PM
he looks like he's wearing a picnic blanket
Donald @ Aug 15th 2008 2:34PM
I'd like to see the Killjoy show up on a podcast, but only if Justin refers to him as "Stat Boy".
Anam @ Aug 15th 2008 2:35PM
You know, it's about time I listen to one of these.
Justin McElroy @ Aug 15th 2008 2:43PM
Do it! This is the one! Your time is now!
Noshino @ Aug 15th 2008 2:45PM
So...you have been here for over a year and you have yet to hear to one of the podcasts?...
BLASPHEMY!
Anam @ Aug 15th 2008 2:47PM
Yay! Justin talked to me. I've been waiting soooo long for him to notice me.

Anam @ Aug 15th 2008 3:20PM
See, the problem I have with podcasts is that I can't tolerate sitting and listening to something without doing something at the same time, and if I try to read something and listen at the same time, I tend to zone out to what I'm listening to.
And I agree with Chris. Fighting games are boring.
syrik zero @ Aug 15th 2008 3:41PM
I listen while working... at work. So it is perfect! Great stuff also
Anam @ Aug 15th 2008 4:08PM
That'd be great if I had a different type of job. =(
syrik zero @ Aug 15th 2008 7:31PM
I have a "desk" job and I don't talk on phones. Just listen to music and old Joystiq podcasts all day
tmacairjordan87 @ Aug 15th 2008 8:11PM
I'm in the same spot noshino, haven't listened to any of them yet for some reason.
Jarret @ Aug 15th 2008 8:45PM
So you don't do anything but sit or read? You don't do chores or cleaning or play "mindless" games or drive or walk places or any other hundreds of things I do while I'm listening to podcasts.
FOXHOUND @ Aug 15th 2008 2:45PM
I lost so many quarters trying to defeat the new challenger, but I couldn't defeat Sheng Long to stand a chance.
Marek Hryc @ Aug 15th 2008 3:25PM
But, you must defeat Sheng Long to stand a chance!
That, or my dragon punch, but that's only at home.
Saria the Cat @ Aug 15th 2008 2:55PM
Oooh! Now to search for a good crochet project to do while listening. Joypod hookering has become my one my favorite pasttimes!
Saria the Cat @ Aug 15th 2008 2:55PM
Oh, typos. Why?
theturtle363 @ Aug 15th 2008 3:11PM
oh lawd
Zertoss @ Aug 15th 2008 3:14PM
Well I'm giving it a + for making me laugh.
Keep up the good hookering, Saria!
Saria the Cat @ Aug 15th 2008 3:33PM
Oh man, Justin! I totally agree with you about Braid's ending. I also felt dissatisfied about the ambiguity. I don't mind open-ended stuff, but when writers leave a big, ugly gaping hole with tons of untied plot strings all over the place...it's just a big mess. There's a line between a "deep" ending and a convoluted mush.
And I just saw 2001 Space Odyssey again last night and that did not help with my answers blue balls. I need to go play Final Fantasy or watch Batman again...there's something comforting about a solid ending sometimes.
Luis Badillo @ Aug 15th 2008 3:15PM
I was hoping Chris was gonna bust out with a check-rap in the beginning there.
Misfit Toy @ Aug 16th 2008 11:28AM
Agreed. All he was missing was a, "one, two, one, two, step up to the microphone...sucka!" or, "You ain't no MC like me...sucka!". Either one would be the proverbial cherry on top of that whip topped verbal sundae.
theturtle363 @ Aug 15th 2008 3:18PM
"I wish someone had test drived that game"
Truly Justin, you are the king of puns
Shaq-Fu @ Aug 15th 2008 3:44PM
little late to the party (That was last week)
theturtle363 @ Aug 15th 2008 3:54PM
oh man did i listen to the wrong one?
theturtle363 @ Aug 15th 2008 3:54PM
dear God I did
theturtle363 @ Aug 15th 2008 3:22PM
wow, I'm really glad I'm not the only one who thinks GTA IV was underrated
syrik zero @ Aug 15th 2008 7:33PM
You mean over hyped?
j.howlett @ Aug 15th 2008 7:34PM
how often do you listen to the podcast? i believe you got a brush around or during E3
theturtle363 @ Aug 15th 2008 9:06PM
jesus i need to pay more attention to what i do. Yeah i meant over hyped and overrated, and apparently i listend to the wrong podcast. Down vote my posts in shame
Raikage (GOLDEN Gun Of The Patriots) @ Aug 15th 2008 3:49PM
Super Muffin Tops Entertainment System?
EPIC.
Too bad I'm an episode behind... there's always next week.
Kevin @ Aug 15th 2008 4:02PM
Despite having a fixed rss feed, I still got the post twice AND it's still sponsored by AoE III.
Shaq-Fu @ Aug 15th 2008 4:09PM
Nice job Chris. Between the opening, almost skipping a segment, and not knowing BC doesn't have an online co-op, you ruined the podcast. Are you kidding me? You obviously don't care about gaming, evidenced by your purchase of solitaire on teh iPhone, so why do you continue to work for a gaming website? You should just give up now before a challenger appears and just wipes the floor with your shiny bald head.
And what are you going to do if Galaga doesn't have co-op? Go back to the 70's and force Namco to put it into the original?
Finally, how can you not have bought Geo Wars yet? By the time you get it, both Justin and Ludwing will be so insanely good, you'll never be able to catch them.
Anam @ Aug 15th 2008 4:56PM
Someone named Shaq-Fu insulting someone else's taste in games... haha
Zertoss @ Aug 15th 2008 5:34PM
OMG Chris Defense Force ASSEMBLE!
...
We have one of those, right?
adrianC @ Aug 15th 2008 4:13PM
stop raping good game covers with your faces.
Marek Hryc @ Aug 15th 2008 4:38PM
It's weird - you mention that this is the longest podcast, (and it is) but it went by really quickly.
Felt like a normal one.
Good job boys!
syrik zero @ Aug 15th 2008 7:39PM
Episode 53 was longer by a few minutes. But I agree. Goes by quick
Jacksons @ Aug 15th 2008 4:43PM
I've never listened before, but what the hell, I'll give it a shot. If not only for the oxymoron that is exercising while listening to game-talk.
Justin McElroy @ Aug 15th 2008 6:11PM
Listen, if exercising while listening to our show is good enough for MTV's Stephen Totilo is good enough for anyone.
Jacksons @ Aug 15th 2008 10:06PM
Well Stephen's got the right idea, I had fun :)
j.howlett @ Aug 15th 2008 4:53PM
i just played the demo for BC:R and when it started up i swore there was a gameplay may change during online play warning. then i went to read the psn update article and it said it didn't have online co-op. i'll have to check again.
Anam @ Aug 15th 2008 4:59PM
Dude, you spend time to mention your posters? That makes me love Joystiq even more!
I have so been missing out...
XGM @ Aug 15th 2008 5:35PM
I swear i heard a f-bomb getting dropped, something around 8:45 or so. But i too share that same problem with the Analogs/D-pad
Justin McElroy @ Aug 15th 2008 6:16PM
You got me! I realized it halfway through the word, did you see how I tried to reroute the sentence mid stream? I'm sorry. We need a swear jar or something.
Zertoss @ Aug 15th 2008 8:10PM
You could use the money to buy some pitas and fry that shit up.
XGM @ Aug 15th 2008 8:39PM
Haha I wasn't done listening yet and then you guys come up about trying not to drop that :P Anyways that was a great podcast, keep up the good work on that.
XGM @ Aug 15th 2008 8:41PM
PS I'd love to hear a full uncensored podcast once time, that would be so funny.
truent @ Aug 15th 2008 6:32PM
