While most people hail the Dreamcast as Sega's swan song, we want to go back one generation and remember the Saturn, which gave birth to person favorites
NiGHTS Into Dreams, Dragon Force and ... um ...
Christmas NIGHTS. We know there are other classics, so tell us your experiences with the console. Note how the special
NIGHTS controller (mid left) looks conspicuously like the Sega Dreamcast pad. Here's what we'll be playing this weekend. Be sure to let us know what games will be occupying your time!
- Alexander Sliwinski: I'll be at a wedding in New Rochelle, NY this weekend, so it's DS time for me. The plan is to keep my Civilization Revolution addiction going with the DS version. Also, hoping to be back in time on Sunday to make some more money with the Fable II pub games. Need to learn and play the table better on Keystone (a variation of Craps -- yes giggling youths out there, that's the name of a real casino game).
- Andrew Yoon: I'm only a small handful of Trophies away from getting 100% in PixelJunk Eden. This weekend, I'll be going through the latest Ratchet & Clank adventure, Quest for Booty, and then some demo time with Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.
- Christopher Grant is the leader and doesn't have to answer for himself.
- Griffin McElroy won't hear our Roll of Thunder call until the weekend begins.
- Kevin Kelly: The Fable II pub games will be occurring, with several liftings of ale. I'll also be playing in my D&D campaign (hello, nerdom!) and trying out this new card game called Pecking Order. It's crazy, I tells ya. Plus some of my family is in town, so there will be some board game happenings going on as well.
- Kyle Orland is a bunny rabbit.
- James Ransom-Wiley: For the first time -- ever! -- I went with a PS3 version; in this case: Bionic Commando Rearmed. I also plan to spend some time psyching myself up for Too Human's imminent release. (Oh, and Amazon, where is my Pub Games code?!)
- Jason Dobson: After grinding this week through the Netherworld, I'm going to be spending the weekend mastering the subtleties of the Xbox 360's terrible d-pad in Bionic Commando Rearmed, most likely falling to my death in the process.
- Justin McElroy: I'm playing Space Siege as we speak, and I'm enjoying it so far. I'm also going to be listening to the Joystiq Podcast, because it's so funny and good and right. [Ed. - Justin later told me to add "Too Human" to the list because he wanted to flaunt it over the peons.]
- Ludwig Kietzmann: I'm taking my copy of Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes (cry more, purists!) to a friend's place and introducing him to the world of cardboard boxes and heavy handed exposition. When I'm back home, I'll be hacking away at Crisis Core's never-ending side missions, fumbling my way through Alone in the Dark and slashing wildly at scantily clad sword mistresses in Soul Calibur IV.
- Randy Nelson: My brief stint behind the handlebars of Burnout Paradises' motorcycles has once again revved the throttle of my addiction to the game, so you'll no doubt see me Freeburning on PSN this weekend. I'm also aching to get into the swing of Bionic Commando: Rearmed (I opted for the XBLA route) and should probably brush up on my Soul Calibur IV skillz if I ever hope to go toe-to-toe with Ludwig online.
- Ross Miller: XBLOverload with Braid, Bionic Commando and Pub Games. I'm still going through Rock Band drums on left-handed hard mode to try and get the other half of my body more in sync.

Guardian Heroes is the single best video game ever made, of any generation. Ever. If you tricked the game into letting you play hard mode with 99 continues, it had it all: four player co-op, special moves plus magic powers, rpg elements skill points you could put into different stats, giant bosses, screen-wide lasers, branching storyline, a pet rabbit that you could launch like a rocket, and a versus mode in which you could pit a crippled old man against a four story tall sky demon (and the old man would win.)
Truly, it was the game of kings.
Deadpool @ Aug 15th 2008 9:25PM
Guardian Heroes is my favorite game ever! Randy was my favorite character. Theres also a debug mode which was awesome. I just got a 6 player adaptor from ebay just for this game. Heck, I bought a Sega Saturn just for this game! I would like to see a remake of it in 2-D and hi-res.
To bad the box art looks like crap...I almost passed up this game because of it.
WiNG [Life in a Game] @ Aug 16th 2008 12:16AM
I bought Guardian Heroes and a 6 player adapter for $120 on eBay.
IMO it is EASILY worth more than 2 modern $60 releases.
dylanbishop @ Aug 19th 2008 4:08AM
Totally. Glad you mentioned it, I just pulled my Saturn out of the closet two or three weeks ago to play Azel: Panzer Dragoon Saga and of course NiGHTS. But I almost totally forgot about Guardian Heroes. You gotta love the zany saxaphone-heavy music that should feel totally out of place yet doesn't at all! ;) Treasure rocks. They had this really trippy import called Silhouette Mirage. It was kind of like a shooter/platformer but had a twist- some enemies you could only kill while shooting from the right while others you had to shoot from the left. You would only knock an enemy down if you shot them from the wrong direction so it presented a unique and challenging twist to the genre. I only wish it had been localized because it became difficult later in the game. But it had insane fullscreen alpha channel lasers and tons of enemies on screen at a time. Great stuff. :)
Shaq-Fu @ Aug 15th 2008 8:47PM
Twin Snakes was better. Deal with it

Kojima begs to differ.
snarfoogle @ Aug 16th 2008 10:42AM
Well Kojima's "last" MGS game was MGS2, so we all know how trustworthy he is. TWIN SNAKES 4 LYFE
Neebs @ Aug 15th 2008 8:49PM
I've been sick the past week, so almost nothing.
Superstar90 @ Aug 15th 2008 8:51PM
I'm going to continue my insane quest to max level all 10 party members in Eternal Sonata. I've been at it since forever, and they range from 86-70... I've got a long way ahead of me. Reason: I just want to max level something for once.
That and some Etrian Odyssey 2.
Ray Hargreaves @ Aug 15th 2008 9:02PM
Fighters Megamix - I loved that game!
NukeAssault @ Aug 15th 2008 9:04PM
COD4, Fable Pub games and yeah that's about it... Need me some Galaga.
Sadistic Freek @ Aug 15th 2008 9:06PM
Oh man, I always loved Albert Odyssey: Legend of Eldean, it's still one of my all time favorite games. I also loved Magic Knight Rayearth. Oh, and I always had a soft spot for Dark Savior. I still have a Saturn and many games on it, including the Panzeer Dragoon series, and the games listed above. It was a great system for RPG lovers, it's a shame it didn't last.
Cesaria (Pitchfork Fest 2008 FTMFW!) @ Aug 15th 2008 9:10PM
Super Princess Peach....shut up.
boxmyth @ Aug 15th 2008 9:18PM
To this day, I love my Saturn. I wish I had more income to pick up the rarities on ebay. I just bought Nights, Christmas Nights, and the 3D pad for a decent price. And I like to break out the Sexy Parodius whenever I'm back home with the parents. And Guardian Heroes... great stuff, that.
I'm pretty sure the Saturn is still my favorite system ever (due to the great import scene during its time). The PS3 is slowly creeping up in my book, though.
Squirrel3D @ Aug 17th 2008 11:50AM
I never played a Saturn. I'm f*cking seroius.
j.howlett @ Aug 15th 2008 9:29PM
i enjoyed my saturn. see the final evolution of the genesis controller and the birth of the dreamcast controller. i have no plans for the weekend except to find out more about bigfoot. i'm sure i'll get some gaming in and demo time.
Marzz @ Aug 15th 2008 9:34PM
I'm either gonna be hacking away at Legend of Oasis, on my Saturn, or I'm gonna be working my way through my insane list of virtual console games, which i've conveniently compiled here-

Wiinterfang @ Aug 15th 2008 9:52PM
I've been playing some SVC chaos, I'm still can't fight against athena I'm playing in hard and that Mr karate boss is a bitch to kill.
DarthVicious82 @ Aug 15th 2008 9:54PM
I loved playing the X-Men vs Street Fighter import with the RAM Cart. I think that really was my first experience playing a game at home that truly matched the speed and graphics of a dedicated arcade machine. It was also cool to actually USE the cart slot on the back of the Saturn.
Jacksons @ Aug 15th 2008 10:00PM
Downstream Panic on the PSP. I dig it.
Chase @ Aug 15th 2008 10:12PM
Panzer Dragoon > Star Fox
Yeah, I went there. Stupid Slippy Toad.
Bitter Kevin @ Aug 15th 2008 10:19PM
Still have my Saturn working, best 2D console ever.
Great games:
Fighters Megamix
Soviet Strike
Bomberman (10 players!!!!)
Fire Pro Wrestling 6 man scramble
All the 2D fighting greatness of SNK and Capcom
Mr.ESC @ Aug 15th 2008 10:19PM
Bionic Commando in Hard because I will never play it on hard ever and yes it's kicking my ass maybe some Battlefield Bad Bombany.
Note:Alone in the Dark is quite easy if you know all the combinations Hint:Ducktape + Glowstick and you will pass all those sections filled with the goo of doom.
Althought I don't think I'll play more than 2 matches of B:BC or play more than 1 level of BC:R since I have some exams to take these next weeks.
xAnarChisTx @ Aug 15th 2008 10:25PM
Maybe I should finally attempt to play Shining Force III. I bought the damn game, and never even really bothered with it. What kind of a gamer am I? A horrible one, that's for sure!

Psaakyrn @ Aug 15th 2008 10:42PM
Anyone else reminded of a Metroid by that controller?
Mr Khan @ Aug 15th 2008 10:48PM
Izuna 2
I was skeptical, but its fun as fuck, even with the constant deaths (5 on the first dungeon alone). Since it's never the same thing twice, you can just keep playing as long as you like
And where's Nigeria? This post seems tailor-made for him

Sega Rally > Ridge Racer
If you argue otherwise, you're an idiot. No, really this time. If you thought Ridge Racer on the PSX was better then Sega Rally, you're ether an lair or wouldn't know a good game if it kicked your teeth in.
Not as good a GT tho. Maybe not as fun as Sega Rally, but GT is technically surpiror.
Jacksons @ Aug 16th 2008 12:15AM
Ether an' lair?
You're right, ether probably would make lair a lot more fun.
Jeff @ Aug 16th 2008 12:09AM
They had white Saturns?
I played Virtua Cop and Clockwork Knight a lot...and Daytona USA, because I had a racing wheel.
s.mario @ Aug 16th 2008 12:13AM
Marvel Super Heroes
X-Men Children of the Atom
Marvel vs. Street Fighter
X-Men vs. Street Fighter
Rumble in the Bronx
Fighting Vipers
Street Fighter Zero 3
Nuclear Strike (sequel to desert strike and urban strike)
and there were also so damn good platformers in there too...
I'm currently looking to pick up a Japanese Saturn...like the one i sold 6 years ago...
:(
Luke @ Aug 17th 2008 5:00PM
You sold it! How could you?
s.mario @ Aug 18th 2008 10:30AM
broke college student. Luckily i'm not in that situation any more!
;p
kastonie @ Aug 16th 2008 12:28AM
if sega got back into the hardware business, it would be awesome. Their new game system will outsell any other system because everyone would buy it to say they have the new sega system....i remember back in the day when you had a sega and your friends were like awesome lets play sega....
Jacksons @ Aug 16th 2008 12:53AM
Sega's software isn't what it used to be.
WRE @ Aug 16th 2008 12:31AM
Patapon, Assassin's Creed, Braid, maybe some Bionic Commando and Resistance.
WRE @ Aug 16th 2008 12:36AM
Actually, I just got a PSP today. Can anyone give me a list of good games to try out? I have Patapon, GTA Liberty City Stories and Daxter. I want Loco Roco and the Castlevania compilation. Anything else exceptiona? I like pretty much anything but sports games.
Jacksons @ Aug 16th 2008 12:55AM
I enjoyed both the Syphon Filter games, if you're into that sort of thing.
Dovi @ Aug 16th 2008 1:23AM
Disgaea and Brave Story.
Kris @ Aug 16th 2008 2:10AM
Oh, how I miss playing Dragon Force on the Sega Saturn.
Kris @ Aug 16th 2008 2:13AM
Oh, how I miss playing Dragon Force on the Sega Saturn.
ogvor @ Aug 16th 2008 2:14AM
Geometry Wars 2, Braid, and for some odd reason, Rollercoaster Tycoon 3.
Jonny @ Aug 16th 2008 3:00AM
Well, they did take the Saturn 3D pad and refined it to come to the Dreamcast controller.
Whats in my Saturn currently has been the japanese Saturn version of Castlevania : SOTN, which has extra areas and Maria as playable.
Mainly have been playing WoW and working, so alas, hardly any time for consoles. :(
