Mega Man bombs Virtual Console, golf too
The Virtual Console just got its weekly nostalgia injection, offering fans of all colors -- but mostly blue and green -- something else to download and play as we wonder where the weekend went and why exactly there is a receipt for a Magnet Beam on the kitchen table.
- Mega Man (NES, 1 player, 500 Wii Points): With the Blue Bomber set to don pixelated pajamas next month, his freshman adventure marks this week's most noteworthy addition to the Wii's window into the past. Assuming you haven't bought the original Mega Man in one of Capcom's many other compilations, Guts Man and company are waiting ever so patiently for you to drop by.
- Neo Turf Masters (Neo Geo, 1-2 players, 900 Wii Points): This is 133 megs of hot golf action right here, straight from 1996 to your living room. You don't have even to admit to your friends that you like video game golf. We'll keep your dirty little secret.

I heart Mega Man =p
Fernando Rocker @ Aug 18th 2008 2:20PM
Wow... nice speed run.
Naota @ Aug 18th 2008 2:22PM
My ex bought me Megaman when I graduated this year.
samfish @ Aug 18th 2008 2:27PM
See, now if they'd release one good game a week like this, the VC wouldn't suck so bad anymore.

Kudos to Ninty for giving Mega Man a decent price.I'm surprised they didn't give it another 300 Points considering how many people will buy it.
Beatz @ Aug 18th 2008 2:41PM
Five bucks for Mega Man is a decent price? You can get the anniversary collection, which includes the first 8 games, for twenty bucks.
Jakka - The Heavy wants his sandwich back! @ Aug 18th 2008 2:52PM
Yes, but the reason why I get half-hearts so much in VC news is because N brings out far worse games for a much higher price(800-1200 points) so it's good "for their standards".
Fernando Rocker @ Aug 18th 2008 2:59PM
Every NES game is 500 Wii Points. Only Japan-only games are 600 Wii Points.
Jakka - The Heavy wants his sandwich back! @ Aug 18th 2008 3:29PM
Yes, but the point is that for once, a game is worth the price.
MuToiD_MaN @ Aug 18th 2008 2:30PM
Hardest NES game I've ever played that isn't Battletoads.
umm....hello??? @ Aug 18th 2008 3:36PM
I don't recall this game being very difficult...most MegaMan games aren't that difficult.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Aug 18th 2008 4:46PM
What megaman games have you been playing? The earlier megaman games are notorious for being extremely difficult.
Levi @ Aug 18th 2008 4:55PM
And you've only played two NES games in your life, right?
DaMadFiddler @ Aug 18th 2008 2:32PM
I still don't get why someone would pay five bucks for one of these games when the Megaman Anniversary Collection, which compiles the first *eight*, is still widely available for around $15.
The same is true of the Sonic games, the Megaman X games, and any of the other singleton titles that are available much cheaper as part of widely released collections.
Fernando Rocker @ Aug 18th 2008 2:36PM
Well, I have both the original cartridge and the collection, and I'm still going to buy this VC release.
I mean, is only five dlls, and I will have it directly on the Wii menu, no disc swaping, and I'm going to play with the Wii remote sideways.
samfish @ Aug 18th 2008 2:38PM
Partly because they F'ed up the controls in MMAC.
...plus it'd be nice to play using a D-pad, not an analog stick.
Sonic and Mega Man X, however, I agree with you on.
Jacksons @ Aug 18th 2008 3:28PM
Yeah, I would strongly suggest getting MM Anniversary Collection for PS2 or XBOX, not GameCube. A couple less features and messed up controls make the GC one the worst of the pack. Unfortunately, it's the one I own :(
Abscissa @ Aug 18th 2008 8:43PM
@Samfish:
That's why I got one of those Playstation -> GC/XBox/PC controller adapters. Never have to deal with the GC's/XBox's shitty DPads again.
The_Punisher @ Aug 18th 2008 2:33PM
I thought megaman was boming golf :(
Jakka - The Heavy wants his sandwich back! @ Aug 18th 2008 2:39PM
Yeah, Joystiq crew really needs their own personal Grammar-Nazi
dark_inchworm @ Aug 18th 2008 3:13PM
I didn't think he was boming golf at all. I don't even know how to bom.
Igasagu @ Aug 18th 2008 2:44PM
woo, now I can play the hardest game ever made on my wii!
samfish @ Aug 18th 2008 2:46PM
Kid Icarus has been out for a while now, dude...
Jakka - The Heavy wants his sandwich back! @ Aug 18th 2008 2:53PM
Samfish, have you ever played "I wanna be the guy" game?
umm....hello??? @ Aug 18th 2008 3:36PM
I don't recall this game being very difficult...most MegaMan games aren't that difficult.
Tehman @ Aug 18th 2008 3:36PM
Part of me wants to buy this game, but the other part knows I suck at the game and will go into a controller throwing fit when the game pissed me off withit's cheap deaths. I want to love the Mega Man series but for some reason I always suck at it. No matter which game of the series.. Same thing is going to happen when Mega Man 9 comes out... I guess they're just meant to be difficult.
Mikeymike @ Aug 18th 2008 6:28PM
"but the other part knows I suck at the game and will go into a controller throwing fit when the game pissed me off"
That's the whole point of the first Megaman games.
Obviously
Mr Khan @ Aug 18th 2008 3:29PM
Real Megaman fans already had the anniversary collection, but the near-perfect Classic Controller and Wiimote-on-side controls make a tempting offer for anyone that doesn't have an NES anymore, and wants a more authentic experience
That being said, Neo Turf Masters gets overshadowed. That game had some of the fundamentally best 2D graphics that came out of the 16-bit era. A thing of beauty and a good golf game to boot.
Paul P. @ Aug 18th 2008 4:33PM
Better than the AC version for a few reasons:
1. The buttons are in the right place
2. Emulation instead of a port so gameplay is 100% preserved.
3. Save stating, instead of saving after a level you can stop at any point in the middle of a level and come back if you want.
Dave Silva @ Aug 18th 2008 9:17PM
No love for NeoTurf Masters? :(
I normally don't even touch golf games, but this one is so easy to use even a hardcore KOF player like myself found it fun. And it was developed by Nazca Corporation, the creators of the Metal Slug franchise! The music is really similar to the series. :p
