FIFA trade jinxes another EA Sports cover
FIFA 09 cover athlete Maurice Edu has been traded to another team, meaning EA Sports will, yet again, have to change the box art on one of its games. Edu, who would have been featured on the cover wearing his Toronto FC jersey, will now wear the uniform of the US Men's National Team -- not Scotland's Glasgow Rangers, which is the team he'll actually play on. EA Sports tells IGN that the cover of the game will ship with the correct art -- no "print out" version necessary.
This would be the second time in a month that EA Sports had to dump extra resources into changing a cover due to an athlete changing teams. Earlier this month the publisher had to fix the art for perennial high-profile American football title Madden 09 when cheesehead favorite Brett Favre unretired and left forNew York New Jersey.

Stop putting sports stars on the covers of the game...problem solved. After all, does anyone impulse buy these things because of who is on the cover? I certainly don't think so.
Hafk @ Aug 19th 2008 5:17PM
I think the Madden boxart looks much better with players, rather than John Madden's head.
Ken Shammy @ Aug 19th 2008 5:51PM
You'd be surprised. A couple of my friends totally impulse buyed Fifa Street (I think) cause sleazy Ronaldo was on the cover :/
Rodrigo- GO Nathan Hale! @ Aug 19th 2008 5:17PM
EA?

In other news, the new comment system really gets on my nerves as it doesn't auto-save the data and I have to pick my current un-banned account from a list of my banned accounts each goddamn time I write a comment...
Oh and Fifa? Fuck Fifa.
paul @ Aug 19th 2008 5:20PM
Glad they didnt put the rangers jersey on the cover or nobody in europe would buy it
mr mobius @ Aug 19th 2008 5:39PM
What you mean, no one who likes to kiss the ass of the Vatican will buy it. The other half will absolutely love it.
Tom18230 @ Aug 19th 2008 6:11PM
Ahhh sectarianism....
Kersh @ Aug 19th 2008 5:21PM
I really don't understand why people care about this. As a huge hockey fan, if Rick Nash got traded right before that game came out, I wouldn't even think about it. I would just look at the cover and think "that's right, he was traded right before this game came out".

Joystiq: The new comment system has a problem. When I click Returning, it doesnt save my email. I have to write my email everytime I want to make a post.
The "Remember option" is checked.
Anyone having the same problem?
Phantom @ Aug 19th 2008 5:25PM
looks like the joystiq comment system is always cursed to some problem .
Kersh @ Aug 19th 2008 5:37PM
I am, but I don't really post enough for it to annoy me (too much).
mr mobius @ Aug 19th 2008 5:41PM
On IE it saves it but I still have to double click to get the option to choose the email address. I also now have to click to go to returning. Meaning the new comment system hasn't fixed the old bugs but has created new ones.
How hard is it to get a comment system that works? Or is this what you use to differentiate yourself from other blogging websites?
Ken Shammy @ Aug 19th 2008 5:50PM
I use Firefox and don't have any problems. Buuut that might be cause I use my password manager thinger on it :O

Same here, no problems on Firefox...ya know...cuz it's awesomeness.
ComradeTrotskii @ Aug 19th 2008 7:58PM
Testing testing one two.
While everyone is talking about it a question: Is there any way I can keep my username while changing my email address. I haven't used the email address I'm registered under for about a year, I don't even think it still exists. Subsequently I have no idea what my password is (I'm relying solely on the good grace of Firefox to do that for me) and I really want to get rid of the Mario icon so I can be like all the cool kids.
Also If Maurice Edu is the biggest star you guys in the US can muster to put on the FIFA box I'm really not surprised you have no interest in the sport, from my understanding he has played maybe two or three full internationals? It's nice that EA are putting an upcoming player (who given a few years could possibly make it in the middle reaches of some of Europes better leagues) but its hardly star power.
Arturo @ Aug 19th 2008 9:13PM
No problems for me. I'm using Firefox 3 with the username/password remember feature
mr nimblewick @ Aug 19th 2008 10:20PM
Did EA put the Joystiq comment system on a game cover?
Po0py @ Aug 19th 2008 6:32PM
Really this is not surprising when this type of thing happens because it is the start of a new footballing season and that is when most players are transfered. Coincidentally that is when there is a new Fifa PR campaign. *yawn*
deft @ Aug 19th 2008 5:43PM
So now the cover curse is that Players get transfered to other teams?
Especially with FIFA 09 having not one but two transfered players:
Adu going to Glasgow and Ronaldihno going to AC Milan
*hopes for Guillermo Ochoa to be transfered to an European team then*
Ken Shammy @ Aug 19th 2008 5:48PM
Haaah, Toronto FC.
Eh @ Aug 19th 2008 6:38PM
At least they had the sense to put Ronaldinho in his brazil uniform, nobody knew what club he would end up going to.
Obie @ Aug 19th 2008 7:45PM
Doen anyone even give a flying crap about who is on the goddamn cover? Why the hell does it matter?
Tim @ Aug 19th 2008 9:01PM
It doesn't really matter, but in terms of games, would you hate it if they had the original Sub Zero on the cover of an MK game, only to be able to play as the robot Sub Zero from MK3? Probably. That's the only way I could think about it.
Flakundenga @ Aug 19th 2008 11:09PM
Edu??? who the fuck is that?? they should stick to putting really famous soccer players on the cover cuz who the fuck gives a shit about the mls!!!
J.Goodwin @ Aug 19th 2008 10:51PM
It's not a trade, it's a sale.
Trades only happen within leagues.
t_m @ Aug 20th 2008 12:31AM
Do I have to click "returning" EVERY time I post? Cos thats gonna get old very fast...
--
I'm assuming this guy is only on the cover of the US version? Given that the rest of the world would burst out laughing at seeing a TORONTO jersey.
Waqman @ Aug 20th 2008 1:00AM
LOL, US National Team. What a load of shite.
Deozaan @ Aug 20th 2008 1:26AM
Speaking of replacement game covers, WHY HAVEN'T I RECEIVED MY NEW Okami COVER YET FROM CAPCOM?! I signed up for it back in April!
Anyone from Joystiq want to use their super journalist powers to ask about an update on that?
Deozaan @ Aug 20th 2008 1:27AM
Yes having the same problem using IE7
