Clarifying its stance on rhythm game compatibility issues, Microsoft's Gamerscore Blog announced today that all the instruments for Rock Band 2, Guitar Hero: World Tour and Rock Revolution will be "cross-compatible" on Xbox 360.
Sony announced yesterday that PlayStation 3 would feature full cross-compatibility among the three games as well. Guess that leaves only Nintendo to make it official.
Update: The Instrument Compatibility Matrix has been updated
[Thanks, Mike]

Mama Microsoft is really being stern with developers, telling them to play nice with each other.

Again: I can't imagine Nintendo doing this. Even if they cared (which is doubtful since it's all 3rd party to them), the technologies behind the varying kinds of guitars and instruments are fundamentally different, presenting a whole different set of challenges than the simple driver issues that Sony and Microsoft faced.

Yeah, I seriously doubt it'll work for the Wii.
Guitar Hero's guitar and drums work as Wii Remote attachments, whereas Rock Band's instruments plug into a USB hub.
Wii games can't be patched, either, so adding compatability to existing games would be impoosible. Future games? Well, maybe the can work. Who knows.

Yep. That was already confirmed by Activision at E3, I believe.
It recognises the RB drums, and it shinks it down to four pads instead of five. I don't know about Star Power, though.

Thank God Sony and Microsoft are doing this. If it weren't for them this would have gone on forever.

Well that's good news. Fewer fake instruments in my closet will help keep the illusion that I'm not a complete dork in place.

this is all good, but my ultimate concern is.. will the other games (GHWT and konami's thing) support the rock band 2 drum set along with all extra cymbal attachments? i'm having visions of buying RB2's premium ion set and adjusting it so it perfectly matches the GHWT drum set layout, and hell, the ion set could even be made to match konami's ugly-ass drum set. this would then be.. the holy grail of fake drum sets.

Very glad to hear there will be cross-compatibility. I was really hoping I could by the GHWT bundle set and get just the RB 2 game so I only have one set of drums and then only have to get an extra guitar. My decision might change after I try the redesigned RB 2 drums and the GTWT and see which one I like best. I will so be selling my drum set I have now and my GT 3 guitar and throwing out my RB guitar once I get one of these sets

If this is the case, and all these games are fully compatible with the different instruments, then why is Konami forging ahead with their crazy drum set? Since anybody seriously into rhythm games already has a drum set, or will be picking one up with either GH:WT or RB2, is there going to be much a market left for Konami's geometric hodge-podge of a drum kit?
All the advance buzz on both Rock Revolution and its drum kit has been underwhelming. If I were Konami, I'd cut my losses and not put that kit into manufacture. I know they invented the genre, but at this point, it's way too little way too late.

I'm very happy that Microsoft and Sony made this announcement. I kinda knew something like this would happen anyway.... but I already pre-ordered the GHWT bundle off of Amazon and i'll just buy a used copy of Rock Band 2 (game only) once GHWT comes out. Most likely I'll get Rock Band 2 (game only) for about $35-$40 bucks on Craigslist or Amazon. Rock On Everyone!

I would think Nintendo would announce something like this just to go along with their focus on simplicity. Imagine the irony if their system lacks compatible instruments....
