MS: Xbox 360 instruments from Rock Band 2, GH: World Tour and Rock Revolution will be cross-compatible
Clarifying its stance on rhythm game compatibility issues, Microsoft's Gamerscore Blog announced today that all the instruments for Rock Band 2, Guitar Hero: World Tour and Rock Revolution will be "cross-compatible" on Xbox 360.
Sony announced yesterday that PlayStation 3 would feature full cross-compatibility among the three games as well. Guess that leaves only Nintendo to make it official.
Update: The Instrument Compatibility Matrix has been updated

Mama Microsoft is really being stern with developers, telling them to play nice with each other.
Tiptup300 @ Aug 19th 2008 10:26PM
They already have been... Also new comment system? GREAT!

Nintendo will announce tomorrow, that its Wii Music instruments will also be compatible with everyone else.
ScottG13 @ Aug 19th 2008 6:38PM
No. Tomorrow, Nintendo will announce that Wii Music STILL sucks and is indeed still for babies.
x Shadow @ Aug 19th 2008 9:26PM
awwww......
come on, its not gonna be that bad..
i can use my Wii-Mote as a flute...
isn't that the innovation everyone wants?
lol
Farseer (GDI) @ Aug 19th 2008 11:15PM
It's what Ian Anderson wants...
;)

Again: I can't imagine Nintendo doing this. Even if they cared (which is doubtful since it's all 3rd party to them), the technologies behind the varying kinds of guitars and instruments are fundamentally different, presenting a whole different set of challenges than the simple driver issues that Sony and Microsoft faced.
BPM [MSN: BPMdotEXE @ hotmail.com] @ Aug 19th 2008 6:22PM
Yeah, I seriously doubt it'll work for the Wii.
Guitar Hero's guitar and drums work as Wii Remote attachments, whereas Rock Band's instruments plug into a USB hub.
Wii games can't be patched, either, so adding compatability to existing games would be impoosible. Future games? Well, maybe the can work. Who knows.
sohcahtoa @ Aug 19th 2008 6:04PM
Does this mean RB1 works with GH4?!!
Hafk @ Aug 19th 2008 6:14PM
Yep. That was already confirmed by Activision at E3, I believe.
It recognises the RB drums, and it shinks it down to four pads instead of five. I don't know about Star Power, though.
Jigga @ Aug 19th 2008 6:38PM
That was confirmed a while ago
Manbearpig @ Aug 19th 2008 6:07PM
Thank God Sony and Microsoft are doing this. If it weren't for them this would have gone on forever.
Joystick Hero @ Aug 19th 2008 6:08PM
Well that's good news. Fewer fake instruments in my closet will help keep the illusion that I'm not a complete dork in place.
Vegnagun bwf @ Aug 19th 2008 6:11PM
this is obviously good news
deft @ Aug 19th 2008 6:11PM
Uhh... this was announced and confirmed at E3
OMGOMG @ Aug 19th 2008 6:18PM
YOU WERE ANNOUNCED AT E3!!!
Sorry.
Poke4Christ @ Aug 19th 2008 7:29PM
That settles it. I'm buying Guitar Hero World Tour and getting Rock Band 2 Sepperatly. Now I'll just need to borrow someone's RB so I can get the songs off of it.
Poke4Christ @ Aug 19th 2008 7:36PM
I'm also wondering if the WT instruments will work with RB 1.
Terrence Newton @ Aug 19th 2008 7:53PM
this is all good, but my ultimate concern is.. will the other games (GHWT and konami's thing) support the rock band 2 drum set along with all extra cymbal attachments? i'm having visions of buying RB2's premium ion set and adjusting it so it perfectly matches the GHWT drum set layout, and hell, the ion set could even be made to match konami's ugly-ass drum set. this would then be.. the holy grail of fake drum sets.
Mrblonde @ Aug 19th 2008 8:44PM
I don't see why it wouldn't work. Im sure it will
Mrblonde @ Aug 19th 2008 8:52PM
Very glad to hear there will be cross-compatibility. I was really hoping I could by the GHWT bundle set and get just the RB 2 game so I only have one set of drums and then only have to get an extra guitar. My decision might change after I try the redesigned RB 2 drums and the GTWT and see which one I like best. I will so be selling my drum set I have now and my GT 3 guitar and throwing out my RB guitar once I get one of these sets
Mr. Bungo @ Aug 19th 2008 9:11PM
If this is the case, and all these games are fully compatible with the different instruments, then why is Konami forging ahead with their crazy drum set? Since anybody seriously into rhythm games already has a drum set, or will be picking one up with either GH:WT or RB2, is there going to be much a market left for Konami's geometric hodge-podge of a drum kit?
All the advance buzz on both Rock Revolution and its drum kit has been underwhelming. If I were Konami, I'd cut my losses and not put that kit into manufacture. I know they invented the genre, but at this point, it's way too little way too late.
ShockWaveEX @ Aug 19th 2008 9:12PM
Thats good for RB2 and GHWT.
Katinsp@verizon.net @ Aug 19th 2008 10:37PM
I'm very happy that Microsoft and Sony made this announcement. I kinda knew something like this would happen anyway.... but I already pre-ordered the GHWT bundle off of Amazon and i'll just buy a used copy of Rock Band 2 (game only) once GHWT comes out. Most likely I'll get Rock Band 2 (game only) for about $35-$40 bucks on Craigslist or Amazon. Rock On Everyone!
Phillip @ Aug 20th 2008 12:10AM
I would think Nintendo would announce something like this just to go along with their focus on simplicity. Imagine the irony if their system lacks compatible instruments....
IMURZRO @ Aug 20th 2008 7:22PM
Now after the games come out, we need a list of what combination of guitar/drums works best, so we're not stuck with sticky buttons, broken whammies or worn out drums.
