Silicon Knights' next game not 'Two Human,' but trilogy will continue
For better or worse, Silicon Knights has finally kicked Too Human out of the nest, seemingly not too concerned about whether it will actually fly with most gamers. In fact, while the developer still intends to finish off the planned trilogy, it's not going to be doing so anytime soon.
Speaking with CVG, SK boss Denis Dyack confirmed that his studio's next game is going to be "Like nothing else we've ever made before." The dev has been working on a new title for Sega, which not too long ago was allegedly leaked in video form under the title The Crucible. Sega was quick to deny any connection between SK and a game with that name – which would be good for Dyack, since it was clearly a third-person action/horror game. You know, totally unlike Eternal Darkness.
"We've been lucky enough to make Legacy of Kain, Eternal Darkness, Too Human ... and if you look at all of those they're all really different," Dyack said of SK's plans for its new IP. "We want to continue to do that, to keep fresh. That's really what's important, and making sure that we continue to make new IPs but also continue to innovate in the genres that we try to... create content in." We think it's safe to assume that, whatever this totally fresh new project is, it won't be using the Unreal Engine.

Let us hope it doesn't use the Too Human engine.

Dude, you're really a spoiled brat.If more people judged a game by it looks like you do, then I guess that CS 1.6 wouldn't be the second most played game on Steam.
Stop bitching about the graphics and maybe talk about gameplay instead? Too bad that the latter isn't too good either, though.
Nesta @ Aug 19th 2008 11:18PM
Wow, touch a nerve or something, buddy?
I have to agree with him, the game looks pretty bad. Why would I want to see that again in their next project?
JS Beckerist @ Aug 22nd 2008 10:55AM
Hmmm, not sure why people hate this game. The graphics are awesome, the gameplay is AMAZING (once you get the hang of juggling and "advanced combat" it's REALLY fun.)
I just wonder what happened to the promised "4 player co-op"

theturtle363 @ Aug 19th 2008 7:36PM
So, if they say Two Human isn't coming anytime soon, does that mean we'll have to wait 30 years?
Aaron @ Aug 19th 2008 7:39PM
So we can expect Too Human Too in 2018 and Too Human Three in 2028?
MikeO. @ Aug 19th 2008 8:26PM
Yeah, if the new development time for the sequels is 4-5 times longer than it was for the original.
Use facts, not your overused insults. Too Human was in development for 3 years for the 360, which is entirely reasonable considering how long the average PS3/360 game takes to make.
theturtle363 @ Aug 19th 2008 9:03PM
Actual programming and technical development or not, it has still been in the process of development, however preliminary, for over a decade
theturtle363 @ Aug 19th 2008 7:41PM
I'm glad I don't have to feel bad about not buying Too Human, even after having it on preorder for 3 years, but where the hell are they gonna get the money to pay for development?
Obie @ Aug 19th 2008 7:50PM
I know right? They got 10 years of payroll!
theturtle363 @ Aug 19th 2008 9:05PM
if I understood a thing about finances id be able to tell if you agreed with me or not
Obie @ Aug 19th 2008 7:42PM
Should they wait and see if this game even makes back it's financials?
RanWitScissorz @ Aug 19th 2008 7:48PM
I thought two human was supposed to be lvls 50-100, if they wait too long then it will be on the next console... how will we transfer our characters?
Drew @ Aug 19th 2008 7:51PM
I think thats a terrible idea in the first place.
RunningScissors @ Aug 19th 2008 8:57PM
LMAO nice name
RanWitScissorz @ Aug 19th 2008 7:56PM
Actually it's not, it's rewarding to those who will end up spending hours farming items for their characters. What I read was that those with previous characters would be able to transfer their character and items, and those who have not played previously would start from a template character at level 50.
Drew @ Aug 19th 2008 7:57PM
Also interesting: According to Wikipedia, Fallout 3s max level is 20.
Drew @ Aug 19th 2008 8:00PM
I would hope the sequel is better, and the Lv50 in the sequel is equivalent to Lv1. Where's the growth? Why are people screwing with my RPGs? Why is Fallout 3s max level 20? Why am I asking you all these questions? Todd Howard, SAVVVEE USSS!

+1 for stopping.
-2 for continuing in the same press release.

^Not Funny. Too Human was announced 10 years ago however SK didn't start Dev work till after they made the gamecube metal gear so the Dev time wasn't 10 years. You should actually listen to the CVG interview
Drew @ Aug 19th 2008 7:52PM
Hey! Watch where you point!
Aaron @ Aug 19th 2008 8:15PM
I'd hope not. If it took them 10 years to make such a mediocre game, they are the worse development studio ever.
AoE @ Aug 19th 2008 9:57PM
So wait, I'm confused... if the dev cycle didn't start until AFTER Twin Snakes, why the hell has there been Too Human PSX test footage floating around since 1999 or thereabouts? Are you telling me that Too Human PSX was an immaculate conception, no development required? Or did they put years of development time in, abort for a period to pump out some games, and then re-engage on a new platform? The way you paint it, it sounds like a 3 year dev cycle. The evidence (video, screenshots, press release, etc...) would point more to that 10 year dev cycle that you seem to think is a myth...
Replica23 @ Aug 20th 2008 5:03AM
"If it took them 10 years to make such a mediocre game, they are the worse development studio ever."
I think I'll give SK the benefit of the doubt that something horrible occurred because Legacy of Kain, Eternal Darkness and Metal Gear Solid 2: The Twin Snakes are all very good games. Too Human being of poorer quality doesn't situate SK as a bad studio. Many studios have made bad games.
And it didn't take ten years. SK spent over a decade conceptualizing Too Human, actual development was a lot shorter.

I can't NOT notice that.

Psshhh Eternal Darkness is just a clone of Resident Ev...
What? It's 2008?! How?! My life! What happened to all the years?! Nooooooooooooo!!!

Oh... oh thank God, it's still 2002... all is well... wow Too Human looks cool, hope that comes out soon...

Awesome, that might be good news for Wii gamers.
BTW, Joystiq, your new comment system blows. Take a look at this screenshot:

"That's really what's important, and making sure that we continue to make new IPs but also continue to innovate in the genres that we try to... create content in."
I read that as they don't have much to build on. All this Innovation talk is overly exaggerated. There's nothing wrong with building on what others have created, and evolve it into something better. Just because it's something "new" doesn't make it good by default. If everyone innovated a new seperate game, there would be a huge clusterfuck of worthless games that people would have to dig through until they found something they enjoy. At least with established genre's, like FPS's or fighters, i can compare and contrast between games. It's no secret, no matter how people try to make you think it's a bad thing, but sequels sell extremely well.
Arrowned @ Aug 19th 2008 8:40PM
While I'm all for interesting new IP's in the video game market, the idea that there will never be a sequel to Eternal Darkness makes me feel like there is something seriously wrong with the world.
::hopes the hallucination will end soon::

THIS CAN'T BE HAPPENING!

According to Wikipedia the Eternal Darkness sequel is just waiting for the ok from Nintendo before they can start development. They want to make it, and they will, they just don't own the rights. Maybe it'll come out on Nintendo's next system (although it might work out well on the Wii).
Tez (PSN: Tezasaurus) @ Aug 20th 2008 4:47PM

umm...I'll wait for the complete trilogy to come out before playing....I don't need another Advent Rising incident...

I'm not arguing that the concept has been there and that there have been development teams hard at work on it, but to say that the game that is on shelves today has been in the works for 10 years is twisting facts to give the game a negative image.
If you want to critisize the game, do so for what makes the game what it is, not false accusations as to the duration of its creation.
People saying its been in development for 10 years are just prodding at people who will/are enjoying the game because they do not like it themselves.
It's a shame people can't just appreciate or accept other types of gaming and gamers. I, for one, would much rather play Too Human than COD4 or GTAIV. That doesn't necessarily make Too Human the overall better game, but it fits the type of game I enjoy playing better.
It's okay to disagree with that, but people get up in arms to hear those types of statements. And even more so when the people who enjoy these games are in the minority. Despite all negative reviews and people's dislike of Dyack, the game is still phoenominal for those who take the time to play it and enjoy it for what it is.

mine well just let it die its 5-10 year death and not make another than to waste even more of ur life and stress over another not so great game. i dont hate the game but its not what it was hyped up to be i played the demo 5 times its not bad
Misfit Toy @ Aug 19th 2008 11:05PM
This doesn't seem to be the kind of thing to toot your horn about right when you're releasing your game. Maybe it's just me, but I'd rather not wait 10-15 years to complete my trilogy story arc. This is the kind of news that would reinforce people delaying a purchase.
Seems kinda dumb to me. Like something they should have waited at least a month or two to announce.
RiccochetJ @ Aug 20th 2008 5:43AM
Well, I bought Too Human and to be honest, I don't regret my decision at all. I'm having a ton of fun with this game. It's definitely not perfect, but it gives the loot whore in me an itch to scratch.
A couple of things though:
1. I understand that they build the engine from the ground up apparently. It needs work compared to the AAA titles that are out there. MGS4, GOW, etc. I compare it to Heavenly Sword, but with way crappier cut scenes.
2. Give me a better multiplayer experience. The non storyline in multiplayer reminds me of R6V1. Also, the leveling and trading is kind of clunky.
That and some issues with me disconnecting/freezing from the host.
However, I'm completely addicted to this game and can definitely see myself playing this for quite a while.
