I wonder how much AOL is losing... they don't even have a few dlls. to fix the damn comment system.

Now is even worse... it doesn't remember the e-mail, even with the "Remember me" option enabled.

Oh, just realised: maybe you don't know, but you've gotta click on 'Returning' for it to remember your email/password.

This may sound conspiratorial, but it seems to not be working right for Nintendo fanboys. It doesn't work for either samfish or myself, and apparently not for Fernando

Though i can't speak for their browser situations, mine is FireFox 2 with all cookie settings on

Its just a joke, though, but it does show that full functionality is spotty at best

The new comment system isn't AJAX, but it's still bad enough.

Hey, Joystiq, why not check out JQuery? That would allow you to have comment boxes show up under the actual comments, rather than have to rely on the wretched replyToCmt() method. Just, please... get rid of the animated effects.

Do you actually think they will turn a profit with Blu Ray? It won the format war but it's not replacing DVDs at all and with downloadable content already happening it's not ever going to happen. Blu Ray had failed by the time it won. If Sony can figure out a way on the PS4 to make it affordable instead of telling us we'll all happily get a 2nd and 3rd job to pay for it they might have a chance. Likewise if MS doesn't poor boy the hardware next gen they should do fine.

Don't see why not. For every person out there who downloads (let's just talk legal downloads for now) their movies, there are still a number of people (like me) who prefer to own physical media.

I'm not saying they will for sure, but I am saying that if I was working for sony, I sure as hell wouldn't be worried about losing $3 bil on hardware from a secondary division of the company.

We'll see I guess.

I don't see BluRay becoming profitable until HDTVs become the absolute mainstream.

Until the average Jo that goes to Wal-Mart has need for HD video, the price of BluRay will remain targeting the consumer with a bigger wallet (that could afford a HD set and PS3 or other BluRay player).

I know its cool to say "OMG SONY IS DYING!" or "SONY IS ALIVE AND WELL NOT EVERY SALE IS SHOWN!" but the one thing that cannot be argued is because they are losing more money on the PS3 they might not be as aggressive in evolving the system either by dumping more money on it through updates or third party acquisitions.

Or they may be losing money precisely BECAUSE of the improving of the system.

Wait, $5 Billion? That is $4 billion on the original Xbox, not the 360. $1.2 billion on the RROD warranty charges for the Xbox360. We have no idea what Microsoft "lost" launching the Xbox360. We do know what Sony has "lost" launching the PS3 ($3 billion). We do know that Microsoft is STILL not making a profit on the Xbox360 console itself.

E&D Division has turned a profit (although not last quarter).
The Xbox360 hardware has definitely not turned a profit, yet.

Ouch...

Sony's "all our systems have a 10+ year lifecycle" should clear this up once more price cuts, slimmed down, and more games come out.

On Nintendo: Nintendo has always been in it's own world, targetting it's own market, niche (N64) or otherwise (Wii), oblivious and unaffected by everything else. It's essentially a monopoly. Maybe if Nintendo had some actual competitors Nintendo would have to use a different corporate strategy...

The PS2 would also have started its life with a massive loss. Perhaps not $3 billion, but I bet it a close amount of money at first.

So has everyone forgotten about Sony saying they were breaking even on PS3 hardware cost/price? They aren't sold at a loss ANYMORE. They WERE, and sure, you could get technical about it and say that it's still a loss until the losses initially taken are made up for with a profitable PS3, but saying the machine itself is still sold at a loss is incorrect.

This would probably be a bigger deal if Sony didn't make hundreds of times more money from the software licenses on the PS2 than it did on the hardware.

Translation: Making money on the razors is the icing on the cake, but the money made on the blades is a very, very big cake.

what's the moral of the story? i guess we can expect more wii-level crap from all three company for the next-gen round. i shiver at the thought of 2 wiis bound together + some new gimmicks.

this is clearly a big win for nintendo+casual gamers and a HUGE loss for everybody else. i mean why would sony bother taking another gamble pushing on new technology if no one appreciates it?

I wonder how many people just bought new PS2's because they assumed DRE meant their PS2 was "naturally" worn out? I'm sure that saved them a lot of money, along with the fact they'd charge you $40 to fix it even though it was still in warranty. They didn't make that mistake again, but rather overdid it.

Blu-ray? I'm not so confident it is going to be a major bringer of money for a while. I've been trying to get into them since BD rentals are free at my local video store for this month. I've been bouncing back and forth between BD and DVD movies and I just don't think the difference is a big deal.

Sony is beating Microsoft on this one though. Nintendo is doing the best; if you could convince your consumers to buy a new version of the same console, you're just brilliant. Sony is probably wishing they just made a motion controller, turned the PS2+1 white, packed in "Playstation Activities" and called it a day.
