GC 2008: 3 minutes of new Mirror's Edge footage
After seeing the same few minutes of Mirror's Edge footage ad nauseam, EA has seen fit to release three minutes of new parkour goodness from the game for Leipzig. In the newly released video found after the break, Faith works her traceur magic and attempts to escape from snipers inside some kind of warehouse/hydroelectric plant. Yup, we're still excited about this game and we can't wait to play it again.

Delicious.

You're delicious.
Haggard @ Aug 20th 2008 4:56PM
No, you are!
Thief @ Aug 20th 2008 5:20PM
Would you guys cut it out! You're all delicious! Now get along >=[
Peter @ Aug 20th 2008 4:52PM
This game looks really great, kinda makes me excited to see a game that will take the idea of context-sensitive parkour-style platforming (i.e. assassin's creed) and take it to new levels...
Oh, and FIRST
syrik zero @ Aug 20th 2008 4:55PM
First loser
Zertoss @ Aug 20th 2008 5:33PM
Why do people do this (and almost always fail at it)? Posting "FIRST!" doesn't get you any eCred. In fact, you lose eCred for it. You lose even more eCred when you post "FIRST!" and aren't even first, and we all make fun of you for it.
So to all of you "FIRST!" posters out there, why don't you all just stop posting on the internet until you've grown up. Go outside, meet some people, maybe take a bath so you have a chance at scoring your first kiss that wasn't from your mother. Whatever you want to do, as long as it's far away from a keyboard.
Haggard @ Aug 20th 2008 8:07PM
The Joystiq comment system seems like unstable ground to be staking your e-peen on 'first' posts. Just do it on some crappy phone camera things viewed by only 14 people on Youtube to get your fill.
Zoot Suit Jedi @ Aug 20th 2008 8:12PM
I'm banging your moms brains out right now. She is writhing in ecstasy as I type this. Your probably wondering to yourself "why?" "How is this relevant?"
Well, like you, I have chosen this little video game site, to tout my accomplishments, no matter how late to the party I have shown up.
syrik zero @ Aug 20th 2008 4:54PM
Still looks amazing! I can't wait to play it...
Daniel @ Aug 20th 2008 4:57PM
The game looks fantastic, but I'm already tired of hearing the word "parkour". Can't you throw "free-running" or "extreme walking" in there for difference sake?
Fullmetal Salchemist @ Aug 20th 2008 5:00PM
"Parkour" is the practice's name. Being "tired of hearing" what something is called is a stupid complaint.
syrik zero @ Aug 20th 2008 5:02PM
I've heard it called free-running many times Full Metal
Fullmetal Salchemist @ Aug 20th 2008 5:11PM
Yeah, but the original (read: real; read: official) name is Parkour.
Psaakyrn @ Aug 20th 2008 5:12PM
A cookie by any other name is still a biscuit...
Daniel @ Aug 20th 2008 5:40PM
Fullmetal, isn't "parkour" the practice of getting from point A to point B in the most effecient way possible? Isn't it more of a discipline? Wasn't "free-running" invented as on offshoot of this act with more flashy moves incorporated?
So far, a lot of the moves seem less about efficiency and more about making the player feel cool. Wouldn't what we've seen of the movement so far be more in line with Free-Running than Parkour?
Vault @ Aug 20th 2008 5:47PM
Should anyone even care?
Toasty @ Aug 20th 2008 5:52PM
Nope, pretty much all of the moves she's been using in this and other videos are solely for getting from point A to point B, like wallruns, vaults, underbars and stuff like that. If she was doing flips, aerials, handstands, that kind of gymnastics stuff, then it would be freerunning.
Fullmetal Salchemist @ Aug 20th 2008 5:55PM
Parkour and "free-running" are the same thing. Also, have you seen the videos? Nothing the character has been doing can be described as "flashy." Rolling over when falling from a considerable distance is what one does to prevent injury.
Abuzar Baloach @ Aug 20th 2008 6:44PM
Parkour and Free Running are NOT the same thing. Don't get them confused.
Like someone already stated, Parkour is using the most efficient method to get from A-B.
Free Running is more gymnastics and 'cooler' moves. It's not as efficient but looks flashier.
wiredknight @ Aug 20th 2008 6:48PM
"Parkour and "free-running" are the same thing."
No they aren't. They're similar, but they aren't the same.
Daniel's post:
"Fullmetal, isn't "parkour" the practice of getting from point A to point B in the most effecient way possible? Isn't it more of a discipline? Wasn't "free-running" invented as on offshoot of this act with more flashy moves incorporated?"
...is correct, though in the game the moves don't seem all that "flashy." What makes them seem cool is the exaggerated abilities Faith has, her slightly superhuman capacities to jump long distances, for instance. She still follows the discipline of parkour, more or less, but in a "bigger" way.
Also the environments are designed to let the player execute these moves. Notice the completely arbitrary gaps in the walkways. I kinda wish the environments were more realistic, in that you could possibly take a path any normal human would take, but running, jumping and climbing could still get you there faster.
bobartig @ Aug 20th 2008 8:02PM
Funny how a most/all of the founders of Parkour consider Parkour and Free Running to be the same thing. I'm pretty sure there is no difference in the meaning, only that some people use a looser definition of either term to incorporate flashy tricks such as spinning off of walls and various other acrobatic feats.
So really, Parkour = Freerunning, but you can have Parkour + acrobatics, or Freerunning + acrobatics.
And, lets be honest. None of this is about efficiency, it is about path and time minimization. In terms of energy output, taking the stairs is always going to be the most efficient way to go.
Fullmetal Salchemist @ Aug 20th 2008 8:25PM
I suggest you guys watch the "Jump London," the documentary about Parkour and Free-running. The Yamakasi group, a French Parkour/Free-running group, state that there is no difference between the two.
syrik zero @ Aug 21st 2008 2:39PM
Since when are French people always right?
Cpt Captain @ Aug 20th 2008 4:58PM
I wonder how much of that is actual game play and how much is scripted.
Vault @ Aug 20th 2008 5:47PM
I'll betcha 100% of that is actual gameplay.
Cpt Captain @ Aug 20th 2008 5:03PM
I wonder how much of that is actual game play and how much is scripted? How much input will the player have?
Metal Gear!? @ Aug 20th 2008 5:00PM
I'm not sure what to think yet. I will probably never play this without a demo, but I think they realize that this is the type of game that requires a demo. A demo for Assassin's Creed would have been nice, that way I wouldn't have wasted a rental on that trash.
Off topic: My mother had to let her Directv service be shut off(she signed a 2 year contract), and they went and took money, without her knowledge or authorization, directly out of her bank account for the money she owed. Now, is it just me or isn't that illegal? Wouldn't they have to go to court to take that money without permission? Thanks to those that respond helpfully or kindly. Sorry Joystiq.
PSN & GAMERTAG: jorojoserojas - Wii FC: 0749-8609-3752-6926 @ Aug 20th 2008 5:41PM
Not necessarily. Look at her contract, since she may have signed it with the provision that they would be able to do just that.
Especially if she gave them her account number in the first place, if only to provide it as "confirmation" or something along those lines.
mezzanine @ Aug 20th 2008 5:01PM
She looks like an alien. Asian my ass.
komamura @ Aug 20th 2008 5:12PM
nausea inducingly awesome
Psaakyrn @ Aug 20th 2008 5:10PM
a) You can use guns? (she picked up the sniper's gun but put it away)
b) Wonder what the shoes are made off to be so slip-proof
kinshadow @ Aug 20th 2008 6:26PM
a) Yes, it has been said you can use guns on several occasions. The downside is they severely limit your movement (no jumping, etc.)
b) They are made with the flesh of an unbaptized male child.
Tair @ Aug 20th 2008 5:21PM
I've just noticed - the big round place where she finishes up is the place she dropped into at the end of the first trailer...
DangerMouse @ Aug 20th 2008 5:23PM
It looks like the game plays itself.
kinshadow @ Aug 20th 2008 6:28PM
You are partially correct. The game pre-order bonus is a small Chinese ex-gold farmer that will play the game for you upon request.
Kamizar @ Aug 20th 2008 5:28PM
This game is parkouring straight into my heart.
fred @ Aug 21st 2008 12:31PM
I just had the funniest image of the main character parkouring through heart valves and running on muscle lining
Charlie @ Aug 20th 2008 5:37PM
This looks sweet. The sound design really adds to it too.
censorman @ Aug 20th 2008 5:32PM
Cool to see Tomb Raider as an FPS. Almost as innovative as Halo 3!
GoldenS1104 @ Aug 20th 2008 11:33PM
I feel like a douche for nitpicking like this, but "Cool to see Tomb Raider as an FPS" is not correct. FPS means first person shooter. All games in first person are not FPS's. Yes, I know there are guns in the game that you can use but the developers have made it clear that you're better off not using them and they aren't really the intended gameplay course.
PSN & GAMERTAG: jorojoserojas - Wii FC: 0749-8609-3752-6926 @ Aug 20th 2008 5:42PM
Yes, but you'll be rewarded for not firing a single bullet. They are not, at least from what I heard, necessary in any way.
Hansel @ Aug 20th 2008 5:42PM
I can't help but feel rather disappointed. This just further proves that they don't seem to be all that interested in having a non-linear gameplay style, you seem pretty much forced to go where the developers wanted. There is no "free running", you just run along the path until the end of the level.
Cool concept, but I daresay this looks kind of mindless.
Psaakyrn @ Aug 20th 2008 6:10PM
Portal's the same but you see no complaints there. Perhaps it's not the destination, but the journey, that counts?
Vaitork @ Aug 20th 2008 6:27PM
The first video showed much more open enviroments, so maybe there's not just one unique way to reach a goal all the time. The player's point of view didn't let us check for alternate ways to go through either.
I liked the comment about Portal. Some games have so much genius than you can't help but forget certain facts about the game, in this case, it's linearity.
You can't complain about a rollercoaster suffering from linearity if you enjoy the whole ride, can you?
Hyams @ Aug 20th 2008 6:29PM
As I understand it, the city area is more open. What we see in the above video looks more like a specific mission.
Yaktastic @ Aug 20th 2008 7:31PM
not to nitpick, but yes, portal was completely linear - because you were in a rat-maze that was designed to direct you specifically in one direction. You were being experimented on with one terminus, but I have watched more than 10 people, gamers and non, play through or parts of portal, and on first play through i have seen 10 completely different ways of solving many of the puzzles presented in portal.
I have also found, though, that lately i have enjoyed the games with one option much more lately. the story telling tends to get more attention, and often i find many fewer compromises than the sandbox games.
DigTheDoug @ Aug 20th 2008 5:42PM
Ok, honestly...what workers decided it would be a good idea to only build half the catwalks and then throw poles around between random ones. The game has real potential, but this level's design isn't showing much.
Zertoss @ Aug 20th 2008 5:47PM
They're the same guys that build all of the buildings in Tomb Raider and the roads in the Sonic series.
Boy those engineers and architects sure are wacky!
Ad-man @ Aug 20th 2008 5:50PM
This game just looks better and better, though I'm still worried about the potential AI and their ability to shoot you when youre standing in front of their barrel...
