GC 2008: Killzone 2 says, 'Hey, look at me!'
Perhaps "pretty" isn't the most appropriate word to describe Killzone 2. But if Guerrilla's shooter keeps showing up to the party looking like this, well, then what choice do we have? We're hot for you, Kizzy*. Three spooky red eyes and all!
(*Yup, official Killzone pet name confirmed.)

posting still pics of a video game and expecting me to get excited is like asking me to jerk off to a shark attack video.
colinbell @ Aug 20th 2008 5:32PM
You have trailers available on gamersyde - KZ2 actually looks even more impressive in motion.
Maverick Saturn @ Aug 20th 2008 5:29PM
There are videos ¬_¬
You just need to look for them.

Thanks. It looks great graphically, but beyond that I didn't see anything special.

Thats what I thought about Halo 3, Bioshock and COD4 when seeing the trailers (okay, maybe not COD4 so much) but look how they turned out.
Shooters never look special in trailers, its because they have become so cliche these days that we don't expect much. Lets wait till we get our hands on the game :)
dark_inchworm @ Aug 20th 2008 8:28PM
THIS IS THE SONY DEFENSE FORCE SPEAKING, JSN. YOUR OPINION IS WRONG. THANKS FOR PLAYING, MUAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAA
Wiinterfang @ Aug 20th 2008 5:19PM
The are more promising shooters to be interested in.
The-E @ Aug 20th 2008 5:27PM
Let me guess??
Gears of War 2 yeah??
Vidikron (FU) @ Aug 20th 2008 5:27PM
And? Unless you're claiming you can't be interested in more than a one shooter at single time I don't see the point of your comment.
License to ill @ Aug 20th 2008 5:29PM
Everything Ive seen on the game so far has me very interested...
Wiinterfang @ Aug 20th 2008 5:37PM
Well it doesn't seem to bring anything new to the table, is hard to decide between this and resistance 2.
Snowblind @ Aug 20th 2008 5:40PM
That didn't really sound like a fanboy comment to me. I'm also look forward to Resistance 2, but I could really care less about Killzone. Why anyone would be excitited about a sequel to a sub par game is beyond me.
If it turns out to be good, then great. But I don't get why it's being hyped up exactly the same way the original was.
Sora @ Aug 20th 2008 5:42PM
Well Halo 3 didn't bring anything new to the table except new weapons and maps (And of course updated graphics), and it still got crazily good reviews and is a blast to play. So, who cares if its all been done before as long as its done better?
Maverick Saturn @ Aug 20th 2008 5:45PM
I don't think that would have been easy considering where the first game took place and how the story pans out, what did you expect?
Killzone 2 to have beautiful vibrant colours where you shoot candy at teddy bears, throw pokeballs at cars, and drive into lala land with an ancient egyptian cat.
Thats bringing 'new' to the table, but it has nothing to do with Killzone :S
Cyro @ Aug 20th 2008 5:56PM
@Soran: You are an idiot. Halo 3 did bring new stuff to the table. At least for consoles. Improved matchmaking, The Forge (level editor), and the Theater system which I have not seen in any other game so far. Also 4 player co-op online (first in console) and a stats tracking system unmatched for a FPS.
Halo 3 is great game. >>>>better than Killzone I. Dont know about KZ2, because its not out yet, but its gonna have to do more than just pretty graphics to match or surpass Halo 3.
Maverick Saturn @ Aug 20th 2008 6:00PM
Its a shame none of that took away the nagging feeling I was still playing Halo ¬_¬
=Curve= @ Aug 20th 2008 6:14PM
'Bringing nothing new to the table'??
It's got a great (looking so far) cover system, which looks to be an improvement (although how many fps games have one? Serious question)
Although, why does every game *have* to bring 'something new to the table'? I never understood that. As long as a game is fun, I don't give a damn whether or not it happens to bring 'something new'
Besides I think people are forgetting the storyline is actually pretty good compared to most games. http://killzone.com/kz/storyline.psml
E.J. @ Aug 20th 2008 6:42PM
@Snowblind
Killzone was dubbed a "Halo Killer". It didn't live up to those expectation unfortunately. Then E3 2005 came and the fateful Killzone 2 "gameplay" video was shown. Sony Fanboys touted it, the rest of the world called BS.
People are so excited for this game to come out because the hopefuls want to prove everyone wrong and everyone else is anticipating for a glorious failure.
Neebs @ Aug 20th 2008 5:19PM
Bleh, I saw the multiplayer trailer.
It was like Battlefield 2142, almost EXACTLY like it, sans Titan mode, except with more brown and gray.
AlterEgo @ Aug 20th 2008 5:20PM
The applicable .gifs are wow-worthy.
Oh, and in the latest vid, Killzone has officially went from "WORK IN PROGRESS - PRE-ALPHA BUILD" to:
"WORK IN PROGRESS - PRE-BETA BUILD"
Innnnnnteresting....

Oh, for the "PRE-BETA BUILD" footage (which is a graphically and supposedly AI updated version of the E3 footage) go here:
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/38628.html
even though it's not clear, you can definitely see graphical upgrades and if you look close at the top, you'll see the "pre-beta" verbiage.
shoan @ Aug 20th 2008 5:23PM
OK I missed the first Killzone so I have no idea what it is about storyline and whatnot. So someone let me in on to why this is such a hyped game. I just want to be in the know. And this is in no way being jerky but I really don;t know anything about killzone. It must be something important to be brought up so many times since the PS3 launch.
Maverick Saturn @ Aug 20th 2008 5:37PM
Admittedly the first killzone was nothing new or special, it was a mudane shooter, however when Guerilla was bought by Sony, it was believed that now they could really make use of Sony hardware getting exclusive help from other Sony departments and from Sony themselves, then 'Liberation' for PSP hit the shelves, it was nothing short of a superb PSP game, and while this is no indication of how Killzone 2 for PS3 will turn out, the videos we have seen thus far, the test runs, the early gameplay reviews and the whole look of the new game have gotten people excited despite the notorious E3 2006 trailer. This is no gaurantee that the game will be superb, but when it is being compared to the likes of COD4 in terms of gameplay and graphics, knowing COD4 was a superb title, it is obvious people are going to get excited.
I think you know when a game will be crappy by looking at gameplay trailers and hearing early reviews, and it can be a big dissopointment when a game you thought would be good turns out rubbish, but things are looking up for Killzone 2 'so far' lets hope it remains this way, for Sony and Guerilla's sake and for the sake of thier credibility.
seanscythe @ Aug 20th 2008 5:28PM
Man look at all the biased haters. Seems some people are upset that sony came true to their words, that KZ2 would looks just as good as the CGI trailer. This game is going to have a great online community, more then 10 player online, hugh envionments, destructable levels (COD4 didn't have that) and tons more.
Don't hate just because it's better then anything coming out on your console of choice.
PSN & GAMERTAG: jorojoserojas - Wii FC: 0749-8609-3752-6926 @ Aug 20th 2008 5:37PM
Killzone 2 looks great.
It DOES NOT look just as good as the CGI trailer, though. Not that it should be expected to, either - those are just "targets".
=Curve= @ Aug 20th 2008 6:19PM
I think it actually looks better than the original CG trailer. The CG one seemed a bit darker, blander. They've added more colors, and the game overall looks much brighter.
Leobebes (BDF: Braid Defence Force) @ Aug 20th 2008 7:13PM
If KZ2 sucks will you apologize to gaming community and disappear into obscurity due to your horrible lack of foresight?
Remember the Haze lesson folks, Sony doesn't back of the hype, even if it means going down with the hyped title. Desperation to sell does those things to you.
Maverick Saturn @ Aug 20th 2008 7:36PM
I doubt you can compare the Haze situation coming from a third party company whos last worthy game was Timesplitters for PS2 to a company which is in fact part of Sony. Besides, from the videos you could tell Haze was going to be meh or crap, only desperate people hyped it.
Guerilla have spent bucketloads of cash and time on the Killzone project, they'd look the pilocks if they don't produce a semi decent let alone incredible shooter, plus the fact that they work under Sony officially leaves no excuse for the amount of flaws and bugs found in Haze.
The gameplay seen so far in KZ2 is a farcry from what we saw from Haze, which looked average at best in its trailers.
I can't predict the future, nor can any of us, but from what we've seen and heard so far, I cannot think for the life of me how it compares to Haze. But lets hope that all the gloss seen so far doesn't turn out to be just water from the shower of glorification everyone has been giving it.
j.howlett @ Aug 20th 2008 10:03PM
haze may be really mediocre with some painful dialogue, but i've seen some gameplay vids of nectar and knife gameplay that i want to try out along with playing dead. if i catch it at a cheap price i might impulsively pick it up.
Vidikron (FU) @ Aug 20th 2008 5:28PM
So your claiming your above caring about screenshots? Or did you just say that because this relates to PS3 game? Because looking at your posting history it didn't long to find this comment relating to RAGE screenshots:
"graphics look great. I hope Carmack and id return to form with this one. "
Vidikron (FU) @ Aug 20th 2008 5:29PM
Dammit... that was supposed to be for jsn at the top.
jsn @ Aug 20th 2008 5:39PM
didn't say the pics look like trash or anything, they look great, as they should. I'm not excited about RAGE either, but their pics looked great.
Vidikron (FU) @ Aug 20th 2008 5:49PM
Upon reading my comment again I realized that I apparently don't know how to use "your" and "you're" properly. I think I've been up too late too many nights watching the Olympics.
The-E @ Aug 20th 2008 5:29PM
Wow.....this game does look amazing....the multiplayer seems like it could be as addictive as COD4 if its balanced....which from the videos it looks to be!!
colinbell @ Aug 20th 2008 5:32PM
Let me list it down
Its too grey - unlike say Gears. Where are the pink plasma guns?
Its too generic - check out Halo 3 and CoD4
The AI is poor - check out the latest vid AND also go to youtube and type in "Halo 3 AI"
But seriously, this is one game that looks like its goiing to match the hype. And I find myself more excited about the multiplayer than single player now.
The gameplay is also looking better in the recent videos - And I dont hear anyone of the hordes who were shouting about Sony lying admit that they were wrong - Guerilla have actually hit pretty close to that trailer. Funny if you recall all those stories floating around about how the PS3 had only 256 MB of RAM and the cell SPEs were useless for gaming
colinbell @ Aug 20th 2008 5:34PM
And all of us have missed out the most shocking part about this article
"kizzy"
?!
really? kizzy?
Thanks for spoiling this game for me, joystiq
The Beta Max @ Aug 20th 2008 5:35PM
Wouldn't Killzy be a better nickname?
Maverick Saturn @ Aug 20th 2008 5:42PM
Agreed :) Killzone sounds to dire.
Kizzy sounds as cute as kirby :D
Sora @ Aug 20th 2008 5:40PM
I lol'd at Kizzy. Anyways...
This is a semi off-topic question, but I figured that this topic would be a PS3 user magnet so it'd be a good place to ask:
Okay, so I know that the PS3 isn't region locked for PS3 games. But, is the backwards compatibility also not region locked? In other words, can I play Japanese PS2 games on my North American PS3?
The reason I ask is because there's a number of Japanese-only PS2 games I want to play, but don't want to shell out for a Japanese PS2 when I'm thinking about getting a PS3.
And to make this post a little more on topic, it's partially because Killzone 2 looks pretty good.
colinbell @ Aug 20th 2008 5:46PM
Hi
Just did a quick check on the net and it seems that the PS3 IS region locked for PS2 games

Alright, thanks. I guess I'll import a Japanese PS3, lol.
AlterEgo @ Aug 20th 2008 5:52PM
You're crazy dude.
This post is a 360 user magnet.
Just look at the first 3 posts! (not their replies)
Snowblind @ Aug 20th 2008 6:18PM
Of course it's a 360 magnet, it's a heavily hyped PS3 game, and a sequel to a rather mediocre game. Obviously it's going to draw a lot of debate.
But I like how fanboys only ever see one side of this.
Try looking in any of the Too Human news reports, and you'll see PS3 fans doing exactly the same thing.
tmacairjordan87 @ Aug 20th 2008 7:46PM
Try looking at old Lair and Haze threads and you'll see plenty of 360 fanboys jumping on the bandwagon. Fanboys on both sides need to just accept that Lair, Haze and Too Human suck.
DangerMouse @ Aug 20th 2008 5:43PM
The texture work looks better, but it's still bland and boring. Don't give me the "war isn't colorful blah blah" argument, since there's other ways to make it seem more interesting. Anyway, i haven't seen enough of this game yet to change my mind, and considering it's supposed to be released early next year, i don't understand why they're waiting so long to bring out the big guns.
Maverick Saturn @ Aug 20th 2008 5:47PM
But....war isn't colourful :S Go to iraq, all they see is brown, lol
Popfrogs @ Aug 20th 2008 6:09PM
They're bringing the medium sized guns this year and the nuclear bombs next year. We have Little Big Planet, MGS4, Resistance2, etc. etc. MGS4 was pretty huge. Killzone2, FFXIII, GOW3 (there can be only one GOW) are all dropping next year. Sony appears to be on a roll despite losing most of their RPGs to dollar signs.
John @ Aug 21st 2008 2:58AM
I would submit to you sir, that iraq was lacking in colorful landscapes before the war.
We should have someone do a war game in Venice. During Carnival. That would be awesome.
