GC 2008: Pour over this in-game Heavy Rain footage
Well, consider us intrigued. From the creators of Indigo Prophecy (aka Fahrenheit) comes Heavy Rain, an atmospheric new adventure exclusively for the PlayStation 3. This in-game footage, first unveiled at Leipzig's Games Convention, depicts our finely rendered female protagonist investigating a distinctly unsettling house. Be sure to keep watching until the stunning scene at the end, where she bursts out the door and screams to the heavens, "Gotcha, suckas!"
We're sure to learn much, much more as we draw closer to Heavy Rain's forecast 2009 release.

BOWFINGER.
I don't know why people are quoting Men In Black, because "Gotcha, suckas" was from the movie they were making in Bowfinger. . . The movie called "Chubby Rain."
Heavy Rain -- Chubby Rain. Get it? Ha ha.
*I* got the joke, anyway. I guess only a couple of us saw Bowfinger.
vidGuy @ Aug 20th 2008 6:22PM
I'm Kit. Keep it together, keep it together. Kit.
When our hero, Keith Kincade, looks up at the alien antenna and says "Gotcha suckas!"... I mean, that is a moment.
Bowfinger was at least three times the movie Men in Black was.

This game will be delayed until 2012

WTF? This game looks to be like the closest we've got to a cinematic experience. So far.
François Lafrenière @ Aug 20th 2008 1:50PM
Watch a movie, push some buttons? It's still doesn't look as good in motion as an actual animated feature. I'd say this about looks the level of Resident Evil 2's FMV. Which is an achievement in its own right, but still nothing to write home about.

No, that is not what this game is please read more about it,
You basically have control over everything the character does, and based off how you do it the story will progress. Even those button sequences you gave you the choice to do different things, here just read this...

I read that article and I'm sorry man, but sounds like all marketing & PR speak. Everything mentioned was a fancy way of saying it will be a prettier Indigo Prophecy with a little more flexibility in proceeding through the story. Which is fine if that's your cup of tea. But I for one was a little disappointed in Indigo Prophecy's gameplay. It looks gorgeous but this is a big wait and see for me. By all means though, hype away.
Hyams @ Aug 20th 2008 1:47PM
Awesome graphics. Nearing CGI quality on the character models. Animations are top quality too.
There's no 'uncanny valley' effect in this video either, which is nice.
My main worry are the QTEs. I hope they're only used in dramatic moments, and aren't over-used. I like how they're done though, with the button appearing at the relevant part of the screen, rather than always in the center.
Lip syncing looks off by miles. I'm hoping this is just a translation thing (the devs are French) and that the final, English release will have correct syncing.
I am a machineee @ Aug 20th 2008 1:51PM
I forgot what uncanny valley means. The voice didn't look unsynchronized to any language, it kind of looked like a ventriloquist dummy's mouth just randomly flapping.
LaughingTarget @ Aug 20th 2008 1:53PM
If the synching is off, they are probably not using synching software (ie the one used in GTA4), meaning they are unlikely to spend significant resources just to match the lips to each language release.
Duke @ Aug 20th 2008 1:59PM
I have to agree with your comments.
As a whole the game looks great, though QTE's make me a bit nervous if they are used often. I'm just not a big fan of having to do a scene over and over memorizing the order. My hand eye ain't what it once was. (I'm faster with them on the 360 than the PS3 for some reason.)
samfish @ Aug 20th 2008 2:04PM
There's no uncanny valley effect because you can blatantly tell it's computer graphics. The animation is also a dead giveaway. It lacks the stiffness, to a certain extent, of most videogame animations, but it's still 'not right'.
The voice syncing is also way off, as noted, but that might changed for the final release.
cxm @ Aug 20th 2008 2:05PM
Have you played indigo prophecy? The entire game was pretty much nothing but QTEs. Interesting to see the story unravel, but from a gameplay perspective, it gets boring...fast.
Hyams @ Aug 20th 2008 2:14PM
I've just watched the HD version on gametrailers, and noticed that the lip syncing isn't as bad as it looks on the above video. In fact, it looks spot on.
She opens her mouth and hesitates for a second before speaking. Which looks fine in the high res video, but the in the low res one it looks like poor lip syncing.
Have a look-see: http://www.gametrailers.com/player/38635.html
samfish @ Aug 20th 2008 2:18PM
hmm
I watched this version and it was still pretty off to me :\

1up's article is pretty nice.

Apparently you can move the camera around to get different QTE options... As well as the way you resolve it can affect everything... Doesn't sound like you'll just be stuck trying to press O.
Eh @ Aug 20th 2008 3:37PM
Is everyone going to start saying "uncanny valley" now because of that emily video?
"These graphics are good but they aint no uncanny valley!"
ugh
The Doctor @ Aug 20th 2008 7:06PM
It's out of the uncanny valley and into the clearly animated valley, so that at points, even though the graphics are extremely realistic, my brain was trying to associate it with cartoons.
Still better than one's brain screaming "THIS IS CREEPY" though.
Ayrkain @ Aug 21st 2008 4:38AM
I get more "uncanny valley" effect from Anne Coulter than this trailer.
colinbell @ Aug 20th 2008 1:48PM
Looks like the same kind of story-driven gameplay with QTE action scenes as in Indigo prophecy - which is good, really liked that game, and would be a good change from all the shooter and racin games coming up next six months
I am just hopeful that the gameplay will evolve from Indigo - maybe a more sandbox or adventure game style open world, multiple outcomes for different scenarios, etc
Hyams @ Aug 20th 2008 1:50PM
Well, apparently Heavy Rain's story will be more flexible than Indigo Prophecy's/Farenheit's. So yeah, I'm guess this means multiple possible outcomes for some situations.
Ludwig Kietzmann @ Aug 20th 2008 1:54PM
And not losing the plot entirely in the final act, what with the arrival of evil AI grandmas.
xGeneral DEATHx @ Aug 20th 2008 2:28PM
SPOILER ALERT!
Hyams @ Aug 20th 2008 2:30PM
Holy crap, have a read through this: http://uk.gamespot.com/ps3/adventure/heavyrain/news.html?sid=6196255%E2%88%82&tag=gs_previews&subj=6196255&page=2
The story is insanely flexible. There are loads of different possible outcomes for each scene, and the game will just remember what happened and carry on creating the story with that information in mind.
So you could, for example, escape from the madman, or kill him, or get him arrested, or the woman could die, and the story would just carry on with this information in mind.
Fullmetal Salchemist @ Aug 20th 2008 4:27PM
I am also worried about the story collapsing into itself in the third act.
Dopple Boppler @ Aug 20th 2008 1:48PM
Haha Bowfinger. I love it.

There's that word again; "heavy". Why are things so heavy in the future? Is there a problem with the earth's gravitational pull?

As for HR, I wish I had played INDIGO PROPHECY now. I don't even know if the local stores still carry it.
