Finally. After molesting countless thumbs and ruining everybody's Pac-Man CE scores, the Xbox 360 controller's dismal d-pad looks to be replaced by, well, a functional d-pad. IGN's Martin Robinson claims to have played with a redesigned controller at Leipzig's Games Convention, describing it as "aesthetically identical" to the original (it's actually a sickly green), with "the d-pad sitting in a larger rocker and proving more tactile." The new controller is expected to debut alongside Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 and is thought to have been prompted by the upcoming release of Street Fighter IV.
Good riddance, you worthless, clacking agent of spongy misdirection. Oh, and tell The Duke we said "Hi."
Update: Curses! The pad is a "limited edition, promotional item" for now.
[Thanks, Fenix]

Fans: WE WANT RUMBLE
Sony: Okay, you can have rumble, but you need to pay $55 for a brand new controller.
Fans: WE WANT A BETTER D-PAD
Microsoft: Okay, but you need to buy a "limited edition" controller, which will sell for anywhere between $50-$60.
Fans: WE WANT 1:1 MOTION
Nintendo: Okay, but you need to buy this $10-15 attachment to your current controller.
If you want rumble or a better d-pad, then you "need" a new $55 controller

I'm not "mad", just "annoyed." Because you are annoying. Not so much what you have to say, but how you say it.
Yes, if a game "requires" MotionPlus, you will need it no matter what. But, so far, the only game to require that is Wii Sports Resort... which comes bundled with a MotionPlus for $50. So far, no other title has been specified to require it, or even use it as an option (not that I'm aware of, at least).
My point being is that it is attached to existing Wii Remotes; you don't have to replace it to get the new functionality, like with the 360 controller or SIXAXIS.
Hell, what about the introduction of DualAnalog and DualShock for PS1? Any game that REQUIRED the use of the analog sticks (prime example: Ape Escape) could not be played at all with the original, analog-less PlayStation controllers.

About damn time. I do agree with Vcize though, the design really is a fundamentally flawed - to take it anywhere past "actually functional" it'd need a complete redesign.
I hope they fix the buttons while they're at it too, so they're not as stiff.

Anybody that says the 360 controller design is flawed and sucks has personal issues with MS and cannot be taken serious.

I agree that the controller's d-pad isn't that great, but if someone says the entire controller is a bad design and flawed then one might think "fanboyism"

Of course it wasn't perfect. It just took getting used to. A learning curve, if you will. But fanboys wanna act like "OH NOEZ, MY THUMB IS MELTING I CANT EVER PLAY TEH STREETFIGHTERZZZ AGAIN ARGHHHHH!!!1!"

The 360 controller is by far my favorite of any console I've ever played, but controller preference is just that...a preference, and I am sure there are plenty of people that don't like it.
Fenix, the 360's d-pad was far more than just "getting used to it". The whole design (of the d-pad, certainly not the whole controller) is just a bad idea from the get-go. It sits on a rocker. As such, to register a new click, it has to reset on the rocker first. So, if you want to tap 'forward, forward' you actually have to do 'forward, let go and wait for th d-pad to re-center itself, forward'. That is poor design.

I love how the 360 fanbots trampled on Nintendo when they announced to release the Motion+ "That's what the thing should've done in the first place", "Haha you Wii owners have to buy accessories AGAIN".
And now Microsoft is offering a new controller because one of the fundamental parts of the design was flawed from the beginning (much like the graphics chip, heatsink and DVD drive). I'm amazed that a big company like that can make such essential mistakes and not even feel bad for it. But why should they, most of their obedient fans will buy this shit in an instant.

It's not like there aren't plenty of people complaining that this should've been done from the get-go.
The big difference though, is that the d-pad is rarely used for anything more than switching weapons or issuing squad based commands. You can't design a d-pad crappy enough to makes that stuff unfunctional. The crappy d-pad really only affects fighting games, of which there are not many.
On the other side, when you basically admit that the waggle is poorly implemented on a controller/console for which the ENTIRE selling point is said waggle, and pretty much every game out there uses it at its core, that is a much bigger deal than admitting poor design on a supplementary d-pad that is heavily used in around 6 out of 300 games.

Nintendo - Motion Plus
Microsoft - D-Pad
PS3 - Rumble
and all of them you have to spend more money if you don't want it don't buy it.

Well... sorry to burst everyones bubble, but shacknews is reporting that this is only a limited edition controller that will NOT be hitting the states.
Said to be "optimized" for Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer series, the green controller is billed as a "a limited edition promotional item that is only available in Europe, Asia and Latin America while supplies last," the company told Eurogamer.

That's great, now fix the rrod issue that my bro is getting on his new 360 with the latest chipsets, etc. not refurbished. Once they have a REAL stable hardware release with the new dpad, then i'd say they're on the right track (hardware wise). They should also stop selling the system without a hard drive once and for all so that more devs will use it.

Maybe now I can play SF3: 3rd strike on the 360 instead of hooking up my original Xbox. In fact, I could conceivably throw away the original Xbox altogether. Wait, it's still too hard to hit the shoulder buttons, which doesn't work for SF's six button control scheme. I hate that adapters and 3rd party controllers have been basically eliminated this generation, my Saturn pad isn't nearly as useful as it used to be.

That's nice. MS: "Yes! We made it better! Isn't that awesome?" Us: "Can't wait!" MS: "Oh, about that...it isn't really going to be for everyone. Kinda limited. Sorry. Better luck next time."
