PlayStation Eye + EyePet = Who needs real pets?
77
Our biggest problem with Sony's AIBO robotic dog was that, well ... it wasn't fake enough! Though it wasn't able to soil the floor, you could still touch it or (perish the thought!) pick it up. So it's with great interest that we bring you news of EyePet, a "responsive virtual pet who reacts to your every move" brought to you by our friends at SCEE. All you need is a PlayStation Eye camera, a PlayStation 3, and the ability to love.
"EyePet gives you all the lovable benefits and interaction of a real-life pet without tearing up your sofa or making a mess on the rug," says the totally understated press release. With a late 2009 release date, that gives you just enough time to forget all about that real miniature monkey thing you had when you were a kid. Video footage of your new best friend can be found after the break.

I could see Sony using subliminal advertising through this
"Awww, its so cute. Look at that, he just opened his first Eye of Judgment booster pack. Look at how happy the cards made him"

Wow. Sony just found their console seller. Seriously. I'm going to go out and buy a PS3 right now in anticipation of this game.

Because i want to pet air.
it looks amazing on paper and video but for me it i would imagine that it would hard to judge your hand in 3d space with no point of reference.
I love have this work but nothing physical to have a reaction this will only make you feel weird.
just my $0.02

*sigh*
Still has the same flaw that every other EyeToy game has that the Wii Remote kills it on: People want to FEEL their virtual reality. Petting air will not do.
Give us a holographic pet monkey and now you have something.

I'd probably get bored of it pretty quick, but it's too unique not to at least try.

Just like every other Eyetoy game then.
Though that aquarium is still cool to fire up while you read or something. And flying in the Nights part of that Sega eyetoy game *never* gets old.

Can anyone say "5-minute gimmick"? And why the hell does that remind me of the Wii?

It's funny, but it's the same "non-game" "hardcore" gamers complain about. If air drumming is a joke, air petting is equally so. That's not to say I don't find this highly adorable and innovative, but it's no more realistic for me to buy this than it would me buying Nintendogz or Ubisoft's numerous pets sims. Part of it though is because I never really cared for webcam games where you just "waggle" your on screen body to hit on screen objects. That said, I have nothing against this. Self-centered gamers might bemoan the mere existence of "casual" "games" like this or Wii Music, but I think it's important to the overall development of the medium.

This is awesome but i reality I probably won't get it since I don't know how much you'll actually be able to do with it. It would be cool though if it was integrated into your XMB or something and it runs around your screen and does stuff with you without having to launch the game.

It's like you're looking into the mirror and pretending to touch something in the mirror, your eyes are looking in the wrong direction
Weird feeling.

I blame the Wii for spawning such evil... and Braid
(Obligatory Braid reference brought to you by Joystiq. Comment system slightly better than RROD)

I've gotta admit...
This, LittleBigPlanet, and MGS4 make me wish I had a PS3 for those games alone.
Now, if only the price was lower...

The only interesting part of that video was drawing the car and seeing it become an in game model.
They DEFINITELY took that Eye-toy Tank tech demo and put it into this.
