As soon as the original PS3 models were gone, PS2 BC was dead. Half-BC crappy garbage doesn't count.

If you want PS2 BC, you've got no choice but to get a PS2.

Yet again, I'm seriously *overjoyed* that I bought a 60GB system when the drop happened last year. ¬_¬"

And disappointed that no one at the LGC yelled during the Sony press conference to reinstate BC into the consoles. Yeah, PS1 compatibility is nice, but let's face it -- most of the *good* PS1 games have sequels on PS2 that were in many cases, better.

Im really hoping for some kind of update to let us 40 giggers play ps2 games, I missed out on a ton after my ps2 died. MS did it without any original xbox hardware, im sure Sony can :\

You wont be "overjoyed" if yours goes wrong and they can replace it with a BC model which is what happened to my friend here in the UK, they waited 6 weeks before telling him they could not get him a BC model!!!

Riight...with about what, a dozen titles? The Xbox360 has the worst BC ever. Although I hope that they've got engineers working on full software emulation on the PS3. It may be super difficult but maybe not impossible.

If all else fails, there's always some guy out there selling 20/60/80GB ones with either full BC or emulated BC.

I keep forgetting I'm on the internet at times like this, always amazed by all of the pessimism...

Make with this what you will - a friend of mine who's a low level worker at Sony in Foster City said that the Backcompat IS in the 40 gig models but it's in a 'locked' state. I presume this would be so they could unlock it later through a firmware update.

I have a feeling Sony is on the brink of some sort of software solution to back compat since as of now there are no consoles being produced with ps2 hardware. If they don't it will be really disappointing to me because i planned on picking up a ps3 with back compat this Christmas because my ps2 broke 6 months after i bought it in 2001 and i never got another one so there are a bunch of amazing games i totally missed out on.

Sony have stated they are not working on software emulation,

Besides do you really think Sony have engineers working on emulation for next to no additional revenue and for something that is only going to cause them sever headaches with having to test all the old games again?

Its just aint gonna' happen

Bad move on ditching backwards compatability. I probably won't buy a PS3 until after the PS4 comes out; just like I didn't get a PS2 until after the PS3 came out. I'm that patient and content living in "last gen".

Too bad. I'm happy with my 60GB but I hope that they do bring back the "premium" SKU down the road. SACD playback is sweet. So are the memory card slots and additional USB ports.

If anyone is the SF Bay Area wants a 80GB MGS4 bundle, I've got an extra one for $500.

I finally managed to find one of these a few weeks ago. Guess it was a good thing.

Sony board meeting:

Sales guy: "The MGS4 bundle is our most successful PS3 sku ever! We can hardly keep them on the shelves!"
CEO: "What! Well, we can't stand for that! We need to make a new bundle, with all the shittiest features of consoles past! Cut B/C! Get rid of those card readers and USB ports! Slap in a game nobody's buying anymore! And for god's sake, make sure you charge $500 for it!"
Sales guy: "But sir, why?"
CEO: "Shut up! Who's the CEO around here? We're still losing money on each console we sell. If we don't sell any of them, we don't lose any money! It's simple business, you pitiful cretin!"

DAMMIT! This better still be around for the holidays. I'm planning on getting one then, but I want PS2 BC. I can't believe sony... they keep increasing the HDD but taking away the features people actually care about (BC, usb ports, card readers). No one gives two shits about the HDD since it's upgradable anyway.

Interesting. I wouldn't be surprised if Sony did this sometime down the line, but it may not be any time soon.

I'm not buying a PS3 until I see one with BC for 400$.

Seriously, why is it so difficult to put BC in your console Sony? I won't buy a PS3 AND a PS2 because you want me to, you know...
