A tiny bit more info about transferring Rock Band songs to the sequel
We're not exactly sure how much of MTV Multiplayer's information about transferring Rock Band songs to Rock Band 2 is new, but it gives a tiny bit more detail to the process, which has yet to be fully explained. We knew that the transfer would cost "under $5"and that RB1 would receive a patch the day RB2 released, but we believe the detail about a "password" bundled with RB2 is new ... maybe. Either way, we haven't written about it.
Harmonix's John Drake tells MTV that when the game releases on Sept. 14, the RB1 patch will add an "export" feature to the game. Selecting to export will prompt the user to add a password included with Rock Band 2, after which a payment screen will be displayed. Told you it was a tiny detail!

Rock band 2 is going to be epic. I think I'll have over 200 songs with the port over.
syrik zero @ Aug 21st 2008 1:27PM
I already have about 130+ songs I think. So I should have over 200 as well. But I'm not sure how many songs from the actual game are porting over... Hope it's a good amount of them though. There are some I don't care to play anymore but Foreplay/Long Time I have to have. That's one of my favorites, play it every time I'm done with the game for the day.
Neebs @ Aug 21st 2008 2:11PM
I have 105 plus Moving Pictures next week, that'll be 112, +84 from RB2 on disc, +20 from the free 20 song DLC...
216 songs, after the export, wow.
And that's if there's no DLC I want between next week and then.
Tiptup300 @ Aug 21st 2008 4:54PM
I hope we get to choose which songs to move over. Some I just plain don't enjoy. *cough* fall out boy.
Boffo the Sock @ Aug 21st 2008 12:36PM
Why would they password protect the export feature based on purchase of RB2? People will most likely buy RB2 and rent/borrow RB to get a large library on the cheap, so the password being included with RB2 perplexes me.
copa @ Aug 21st 2008 1:08PM
Probably because the content has been licensed specifically for people who purchase Rock Band 2.
Without the password, the songs would be freely available to people who purchase Rock Band 3+, and it may not be licensed for that.
PeacefulOutrage @ Sep 5th 2008 9:41AM
That doesn't make sense either. Since these songs can only be used in Rock Band, the music execs should be happy as long as they get their share. It doesn't matter if you already own RB or rent it, the music execs are still being paid (again, more than likely) for content that was paid for when the game was purchased.
Joe H @ Aug 21st 2008 12:39PM
So basically what they're saying is anyone who buys it used is screwed over?
Efren @ Aug 21st 2008 1:32PM
Probably not, but if that is the case then why would they care?
They don't make a dime off of used sales so why should they cater to the needs of people giving Gamestop their money?
Farseer (GDI) @ Aug 21st 2008 4:09PM
Right on efren - you hit the nail on the head. :)
Tiptup300 @ Aug 21st 2008 5:02PM
Who buys used?

I like the idea of this, but having to pay is kinda messed up. Even if it is "under $5" Which we still have no proof it will be. Remember when all Microsoft Ublished games were supposed to be $50 on 360, that was a lie, so who is to say that this isn't?
The 3rd Hot Dog @ Aug 21st 2008 1:09PM
They've said it will be under $5.00, repeatedly. Repeatedly.
copa @ Aug 21st 2008 1:11PM
Plus, Harmonix claims the relicensed RB1 songs won't anally probe you every time you play them. But we have no proof that they won't.
Remember when Harmonix claimed we were getting the whole Who's next album? That was a lie!
So I'm going to spend the day worrying about getting sodomized by Green Grass and High Tides (which, come to think of it, wouldn't be the first time).
Jigga @ Aug 21st 2008 1:28PM
You're not paying for the songs, your just paying a licensing fee, nothing more. Don't look at it as paying again for content you already own because that's not the case.
VaultICEE @ Aug 21st 2008 1:30PM
I think I'll believe Harmonix with this one. To my knowledge the only thing they messed up on was Guitar Hero 2 DLC.
But, licensing does cost a lot, so if they manage to get it under $5 I'm sure that will be a feat.
Kyattsuai @ Aug 21st 2008 1:38PM
Indeed, VaultICEE, dozens of songs from RB1 for less than the price of one of those 3-packs of covers from GH1 they offered in GH2 as DLC shows the kind of progress they're making.
I sincerely apologize for all of those acronyms in this comment.
Grant @ Aug 21st 2008 2:17PM
they should take the apple route, claim that they have to charge something due to the type of accounting they use and move on.
thesimplicity @ Aug 21st 2008 3:42PM
Hmm... is it only going to export what you have unlocked? I don't own the first Rock Band game, but was planning on picking it up when I got the special edition for Rock Band 2, just to increase my song library for fairly cheap. But if I have to play through the campaign mode in the first game to unlock all those songs, I probably won't bother. I just want something to fool around with when I have friends over.
syrik zero @ Aug 21st 2008 4:25PM
Having to pay for it isn't messed up. This is a feature that didn't need to be added at all. There aren't any other music games that let you get most songs from the prior on to the current. So if you are complaining about a small fee for something unheard up you can just put your Rock Band 1 disc back in to play those songs. I'm willing to pay $5 for that. That's a great deal I think!
Eric @ Aug 21st 2008 1:25PM
copa They didn't lie they tried there best, but they could not find all of the master tracks. Be happy we got alot of great who anyway.
Kyattsuai @ Aug 21st 2008 1:29PM
Sounds like a decent enough process. The $64,000 (or $5) question here is how many gigs of the hard drive are all these songs going to take up?
Ricksta @ Aug 21st 2008 1:45PM
Considering each downloaded song from live is ~30mb I'm gonna say around 1.5-2gb total.
Neebs @ Aug 21st 2008 1:43PM
Looks like that singer is about to lose his 4x.
FSK405K @ Aug 21st 2008 2:15PM
Looks like renting or borrowing a friend's copy is the way to go.
tidefan94 @ Aug 21st 2008 2:42PM
I'm pretty sure harmonix said that they have to relicense them all again which probably means that the aerosmith song won't be on there, but everything else will be. Right?
Farseer (GDI) @ Aug 21st 2008 4:12PM
You know, I would be quite alright with the absence of "Train Kept a Rollin'"... quite alright indeed.
Tiptup300 @ Aug 21st 2008 4:56PM
They've already said the aerosmith song won't be included. Which I'm very thrilled about!
Vcize @ Aug 21st 2008 4:30PM
So wait, do we have to have our RB1 disc to do this? I'm assuming yes, and it won't be a download with all the songs in it?
Otherwise I'll sell it now while it has some value, can't see myself playing it again between now and mid-September.

I have to pay to move songs over to a game I paid $60 for FROM a game I paid $180 for?
Give me a fucking break already.
*insert 2 credits to play game*
Hafk @ Aug 21st 2008 6:22PM
You know, Harmonix didn't have to include this feature.
And besides, you don't have to pay it if you pop in your RB1 disc to play the songs. It's just an option, and there are various fees behind this option.
