GameStop stated that GTA IV, MGS4, Wii Fit, NCAA Football 09 and Battlefield: Bad Company were its best sellers during the quarter ending August 2. The company has high expectations for the rest of the year and raised its full year guidance. The money train ain't slowing down this year.

People really love their used games. GameStop's Q2 results show the company repeated its last quarter and had sales of $1.8 billion again, reports GameDaily. CEO R. Richard Fontaine says the company produced record revenues in each of the regions it operates in and continues to kill puppies make obscene amounts of money compared to its competition.

I like paying 10$ to 20$ for a game instead of 40$ to 70$, yes.

Gamestop just got another strike in my book yesterday. I rarely go there anymore (Amazon rules), but I really wanted Bangai-O Spirits all of a sudden (it, too, rules).
First of all, the employee at the counter was explaining to a middle-aged woman whose 5 kids were running around the store that she could "definitely get 5$ more if you see these copies of WWE vs. RAW on Ebay." He tried at least 3 times to talk her out of selling them to GameStop, at which point I had been standing glaring at the only other employee (who was stacking boxes) for a good 5 minutes.
When I finally gave the clerk the display case, he went and got a cart, opened up the display case, put it in, and handed it to me. I said "Can I have a sealed copy?" and his response was "Why does everyone ask that? aren't you going to open it right away anyway?" I frowned and responded "Yeah, but that way I'll know you haven't played it." He just said that the last copy is always used as a display case. Regardless of whether that's true, people with bad attitude is why shopping online is so much better.
Not exactly a horror story, but good enough to convince me there's a better alternative.

Look at GS reports, used game sales are down. As a matter of fact, used sales account for 25% of their sales. Considering they buy back thousands copies of Madden 01-07 for about 50 cents average and no one buys those, then I would say Po Panda is right, Nintendo is a huge part of it. Also, with the economy, people have to cut back on large expenses, such as gas and yatch insurance, so no more trips to the lake house, but we can burn some time this summer picking up Deca Sports or Battlefield.

Alright, whats with all this gamestop bashing here?
I'm a store manager for a gamestop in NY, and I tell you, all you assholes out there always make the pre-order joke.
I hope you realize that there are things you need to do in order to keep your job, all those people asking you to pre-order something are doing their jobs! They try to sell you the game informer card because they want to keep their jobs. I'm sure there are some mundane things out there that you all need to do to keep your jobs, that totally annoys everyone you make contact with.
Also think about this... $5 for a pre-order. THATS GOING TO THE PRICE OF THE GAME AND WE HOLD IT FOR YOU. That means you don't drive your dumbass around looking in a million places to find it. Tell me how that does not make sense? I dare you.
As for the store itself, the managers control those. My store right now is the best one on Long Island and I very rarely have a situation in my store where a customer leaves unhappy. We even have the customers that come in and pre-order stuff without us asking (guess it makes sense to them huh?).
Bottom line is, no matter what gamestop is to you, I'm having a fine time paying my bills, doing my thing, oh, and enjoying my 401k and my medical benefits. Just like any job out there too... you need to fight for your raise. I did, and I'm not doing bad.

The way in which it doesn't make sense is extremely simple.
Videogame software does not sell out, and often releases with bonuses. There's no need to preorder a game because you're not going to have drive around a million places to find it, it's not 1990 anymore.
Then, when the game does release, and is widely available everywhere, all the stores that didn't take preorders run promotions to try and get you to buy the game in your store. So, you can preorder the game at Gamestop and get it for $60, or you can pick and choose the best deal and likely end up getting it for $50 or with a free $10 gift card on top of that, or something of the like.
There's no need to preorder because game software doesn't sell out at major retailers, so all you're doing is locking yourself out of the option to pick the best deal.

The problem with Gamestop isn't the people that buy used games, as many good deals can be found stacking the 25% off coupons and Edge card. The problem is with ignorant consumers trading their games in for pennies on the dollar for the chance to buy/preorder a game at full retail that's often available much cheaper elsewhere.
People see these "oooooh 20% extra trade-in credit if you trade 3 games towards the preorder of Gears 2!", but fail to realize that Gamestop could give them 400% (not a typo, that extra 0 is supposed to be there) extra trade in credit on many of their games and they'd still come out behind what you could get just selling it on ebay/craigslist or trading on goozex.
I remember when I had Eternal Sonata a few months after release and Gamestop was running one of those trade-in specials so I asked how much I could get for it. $8 + 25% bonus = $10, during their special bonus trade-in time. Instead, I sold it on ebay for $45.
I always see people complaining about too many games and not enough money. Money should be replaced with time, as game software is very inexpensive if you put even a little bit of effort into it. I've probably spent less than $300 the last year on videogame software and I've played at least 25 games, most of them at or just after release.

Well its just like with anything else.
YOU"LL ALWAYS make more money selling something privately than you would to a store/corporation. Due to the risk factor involved, businessess will take your item no matter the condition usually so you're always guaranteed something, where as selling something privately its a crapshoot but you CAN get more.
So it evens itself out really and if gamestop was so horrible...well..people wouldnt trade stuff in there, but a lot of people just dont feel like going through the hassle of selling something online a lot of times so thats when places like gamestop/gamecrazy/etc come in handy.
AS computer literate and savvy as i am, I hate having to sell stuff through ebay/online/etc when i can avoid it.

It's called a business for a reason.
The bottom line is that people out there still pay for the used title over the new one because even the day after madden some guy traded it in. Someone bought it, and boom, looks like the company made money.
Oh, what a concept.
"Videogame software does not sell out, and often releases with bonuses. There's no need to preorder a game because you're not going to have drive around a million places to find it, it's not 1990 anymore."
So you're telling me that gamestop does not offer pre-order bonus'?

Yea, because when Gears of War 2 comes out, a whole shit load of people are going to want Gears Of War 1 right? Because that totally makes sense.
The whole idea on any business scale is to make money. MAKE MONEY, not lose it. I don't care who you are, no company cares about you. If you're standing in a line for a system, willing to spend money for it, they don't care.
It's called corporate america for a reason. As long as there are people with money willing to spend whatever they want for a game with a 7 day money back warranty, they will just soak it up.
Even with in-game advertising, prices of games will stay the same because people will spend the money.
Special editions of everything will continue to be made because people will spend the money.
Microsoft puts out these microsoft points that puts everyone through micro-transaction hell because people will spend the money.
So I'm sorry if your rant and raving about how gamestop is making so much money, and that they are as evil as the empire from star wars, look at places like wal-mart, target, circuit city, best buy.
You will never get a one-on-one about any game, any information on the company, and you'll be lucky to find someone who even gives a damn to help you out instead of being whipped about by a department manager.
That is why gamestop makes the 1.8 billion in it's 2nd Fiscal Quarter.
That's why gamestop is known to be the leading seller in video games.
That's why no matter how much you complain, bitch, moan, groan, blog, spit, curse, and scream, the prices will stay the same, and you will eventually give in to the dark side. Accept it now before it's too late.
Oh, and right now if you trade in, you get an extra 20% trade in credit towards the pre-order of: Gears of war 2, madden 08, or Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.
Hey, I have to Pimp it somewhere...
