Looks really good, but I guess that's to be expected from a game that's more like a movie than an actual game.

Well, it depends - not every game needs to be like say Gears 2, mindless generic alien shooting with copy-paste from Gears 1 and no plot or intelligence to speak of.

I, for one, love my shooters - thankfully we have Resistance, KZ2 and SOCOM on the PS3. But it should be great to have a game where you have to play through an intelligent story with a completely different control and game mechanics. Thank god for Heavy Rain and LBP.

Its funny though how 1. Every PS3 article is peppered with negative, inane comments from people who obviously have no interest in the game (and possibly dont own a PS3 in the first place) 2. Those same people start crying about "fanboys" if you posy anything mildly critical in an XBOX360 article

Not an apt comparison, because "movie" isn't part of the greater whole of the human anatomy.

@collinbell

Get used to it on this site. The PS3 is showing that it IS INDEED capable of some amazing stuff and the haters are backed into a wall. Let them hate. I am really digging the emerging library of ORIGINAL, and diverse gaming experiences the PS3 is starting to show.

What will TGS wow us with? Team ICO for sure, but what else?

Considering you're playing the whole thing, I don't see how it isn't a game, does having a storyline that's not second to the gameplay make it a movie now?

Honestly, the game looks amazing. But I'd never buy a PS3 - for this or anything else. Let's just hope for a PC port.

What sort of strange person would out right refuse to buy a certain console, even if it has a bunch of games they really want to play?

Anyway, no, Sony are publishing this so there won't be a PC port.

This is the first game that really, really makes me want a PS3. (Of course, I can't afford a 360 so yeah.) And that's extremely surprising given the way it started out.

Same here, it's only been in the last few months that I've really started being properly impressed with whats been coming for the PS3 so I'm thinking I might save a few pennies from 360 game purchases and finally give the big black box some of my valuable gaming £££. The wait seems to be getting more and more worth it.

I remember when this was also on 360 but got cancelled. By the time this comes out I should have enough money to buy a preowned 20GB PS3 form Game or eBay.
I can live without MGS4, but if I get a PS3, I'll give it a go.

Unfortunatley gameplay-wise this could be a complete failure mainly due to all the QTEs used in the game. I'm sure the story and graphics will be superb but ultimately this generation alone has shown how important creative gameplay is.

I don't follow your reasoning.

You say it's important for a game to have creative gameplay, and along comes Heavy Rain with gameplay unlike almost anything else currently seen on consoles, and you declare it to be non-creative and a failure?

It is amazing that you know what the game will have or not have. Especially since the "demo" that Joystiq saw was NOT EVEN PART of the main game. It was done so that none of the REAL games plot would be given away while at the same time showing us what to expect.

@hyams:Perhaps you don't play a variety of games or don't like Quantic Dream's games otherwise you would know just how badly the gameplay is of games that revolve around QTE.

@killjebus: I assume you did not read the entire artice as you would of noticed that the author said something similar to that the gameplay is going to be the same in the game.

I would imagine they demoed this level in an effort to show how the game plays without spoiling the intricate plot.
I don't think they would go out of their way to show off a level that is in no way indicative of the game as a whole, gameplay-wise.
So it's not outrageous for someone to say that based on the gameplay described in this article, they're not interested.

Howl Jenkins: Perhaps you didn't read the article. The gameplay doesn't revolve exclusivley around QTEs, and where they are implemented they're far more flexible than in other games.

Why is it that when people are truthful about someone's pet game they get so insulted?

Quantic Dream does interactive movies, not games. Now for interactive movies they're pretty good, but they're still not games. You can't call an entire thing based around timed button presses a 'game' anymore.

Indigo Prophecy was decent, if overhyped (although I could have done without the trendy 'chat with your gay neighbor over a glass of wine' gameplay, or the black character who unstereotypically walked to a hip-hop beat and played basketball). This will probably be about the same: a story that you occasionally have a hand in directing, like a choose your own adventure book.

Mabey it is a little harsh but you have to be stupid to think this game is one long QTE even though in this very article itself it tells you a couple other features of the gameplay and there will be lots more unique twists to it we havent seen yet.

For video games to ever be considered art, there needs to be a strict definition for what a video game is.

The best one thus far proposed is "interactive entertainment".

An interactive movie, a choose your own adventure, etc then, are all video games. Even if they're stylistically different from the norm.

Everything that happens in the game you control and experience, right? You're controlling your character to go inside the house then deciding how you're going to escape, then doing so, and depending on how you do it, it could effect the story, so what part of that is anything like a movie or a chose your adventure book? Just because the game sometimes tells you to press a button to perform an instant action/intensify something doesn't mean it's anything less than a game.

I love the philosophy of oversimplification. Any video game must be run on an electrical device, right? So anything run on an electrical device is a game! Hope you enjoy the brilliant "Street Lights of Rage" game I'm about to release.

Quantic's games are the bare, bare minimum of interactivity. Like I said, Indigo Prophecy was a fun time for a while, until the story got goofy; but it was never a fun GAME. Just twitchy trial-and-error QT events and some barely-branching branches.

I consider art to be defined as something that elicits an emotional response. By this criteria, what Joystiq described could certainly be considered art. "We don't mind telling you that we left the room shaking."

As awesome as this game is I think its important to critique its demonstration on the theme that it is striving to achieve most. That theme is realism. Watching the video a few glaring graphical glitches are apparent that detract from the creepy atmosphere and, more importantly, the realism the game is going for.

As an example, in the trailer the player character (PC) walks into the house, but if you watch the characters eyes they don't show enough life. I mean really how many of us have stood out in pouring rain with our eyes as wide open as that? Even if you enjoy rain you would be squinting to keep it out of your eyes since rain falling that hard would hurt if it hit. Plus it seemed to me as though the characters never blinked. Which is, needless, to say kinda freaky, but grossly unrealistic.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that though the game is going to be revolutionary (hell its the same people that did Indigo Prophecy and that game was fantastic) it would seem that the developers still have a long way to go in making the game look as realistic as they believe it should. Though I will say that the other effects showcased in the video were absolutely top notch from the water effects, sound, and most of all the creepy atmosphere. I'm looking forward to this game and hope that the devs don't feel too rushed to complete it and address some of these minor (albeit glaring) issues before the game's release date.

According to the developer...the demo and trailer that has been shown is several months old. QD said that the current build looks even better. I have no doubt that they will clean-up the animations and make it silky smooth. Remember, this game is a YEAR from release.

Look at those IN-GAME screenies, the texture detail is astounding, the lighting and the shadows...with no jaggies anywhere even on the telephone poles and her hair.

Astounding, truely astounding.

If this is the level of drool-worthy awesomeness that the PS3 is putting out in it's second year of life...what will games look like in 2 years?

I think the unrealism was intentional, to yank it out of the horrid uncanny valley it was stuck in before. (Which still does hurt the theme. I think making it more cartoony to get out of the valley was a major mistake, instead of pushing forward past the valley.)

They couldn't really. The story and the gameplay are so closely entwined they're almost the same thing in Heavy Rain.

I wouldn't worry about the spoilers, though. This part won't be in the final game. This 'bonus level', as Joystiq describes it, will probably just be the demo that gets released.
