PSP-3000 LCD response time is twice as fast
Sony officially unveiled the third-generation PSP yesterday, with a PS button, built-in mic and an improved LCD screen. Our friends at Engadget Japanese have learned a few more details straight from Sony about how exactly the screen has improved. Compared to the PSP-2000, the new 3000 model has twice the color gamut, five times the contrast ratio and, what we're most excited about, a response time that's twice as fast. The PSP-3000 is arriving on North American shores in mid-October.
Update: LCD's response is twice as fast, meaning the response time itself is halved. Fixed, thanks everyone!

Shouldn't it be "half" the response time?
"Twice" the response time would be longer.
Professor Murda @ Aug 21st 2008 10:58AM
That's what I thought too.
Kornkid @ Aug 21st 2008 5:31PM
it doesn't say twice the response time, it says that the response time is twice as fast.
Maverick Saturn @ Aug 22nd 2008 9:15AM
You can tell the difference between 1k and 2k once you get to really look at them.
What I don't want Sony doing is copying Nintendo in terms of releasing the same old thing every now and again, I mean, what the heck was Micro? SP had a lifespan of like 2 minutes before the DS released, so SP's release was pointless tbh.
I am curious to find out what the PS button does.
NaeemTHM @ Aug 21st 2008 10:54AM
*sigh*
Got to hand it to Sony, they took a page right out of the Nintendo handbook:
Release the same damn handheld 3 times, but make it slightly better each time.
I'm freaking miffed because I just bought the PSP-2000.
Noshino @ Aug 21st 2008 10:57AM
I just lost mine on the latest hurricane, so this one is welcome :]
bookishboy @ Aug 21st 2008 11:09AM
Actually, if they were copying Nintendo's playbook the new PSP would be exactly the same, but now available in your choice of 5 vibrant colors. "Look! A red version. Buy it all over again!"
Fenix @ Aug 21st 2008 11:11AM
Since I sold mine a while back my sons have been begging for one. I guess I'll be buying 2 of these bad boys for them come Christmas time.
Psaakyrn @ Aug 21st 2008 11:38AM
@bookishboy:
The PSP is already selling in different colours. Please check your facts.
Superstar90 @ Aug 21st 2008 12:35PM
No, they would do more than slightly improve it. Look at the difference between the GBA and GBA SP. Backlit screen, clamshell design, built-in rechargeable battery.
DS lite is not really as great of an improvement, but it still has a brighter screen, nicer design, better button placement and better battery.
The PSP1k, 2k and 3k all look identical. It's not as easily recognizable as the DS and DSlite... and most people won't see a clear reason as to why they should upgrade.
BPMOmega [gamertag] @ Aug 21st 2008 3:44PM
PSP-2K is a bit different in appearance compared to the PSP-1K. While not as immediately obvious as comparing a DS to a DS Lite, the PSP-2K is a bit slimmer than the first, the entire back is glossy, the speakers are relocated, and the "bumps" above the screen are gone. And the PSP-3K will have a PS button (instead of a Home button), a built-in mic, and the silver ring on the back is thinner.
While not as obvious as the changes DS made, the three PSP models can still be identified from each other.

I just bought a PSP-2000 too before I even heard anything about a 3000. I wouldn't care so much if it was slight aesthetic differences but the better screen is what really gets me because I noticed my reflection in my PSP a lot. Oh well, I guess. I might trade up. We'll see.
John @ Aug 21st 2008 10:57AM
Twice the response time? That means is 2x slower.
Do you mean 1/2 the response time?
MV @ Aug 21st 2008 10:58AM
I'll buy one when they finally include twice the analog sticks.
SirPasta117 @ Aug 21st 2008 11:00AM
Dont you mean 1/2 the analog sticks?
Ninjakamster (PS360 FTW!) @ Aug 21st 2008 11:01AM
Okay, you'll be waiting a while, have fun.
isitstill @ Aug 21st 2008 11:01AM
@wiredknight:
No, twice the response time means the screen refreshes twice as fast. That will help eliminate the "ghosting" effect that plagues the PSP.
wiredknight @ Aug 21st 2008 11:08AM
Yes, I know what response time is, thanks.
It's measured in milliseconds, so if the PSP-3000 is faster, it should take half as much time to respond, not twice as long.
i.e. 4ms is faster than 8ms, and takes half as long.
It's twice as fast, yes, but the actual value is half of the previous version.
Fenix @ Aug 21st 2008 11:13AM
Nerd talk, at its best.
:)
Bottom line, its better than ever. Now, would ya kindly...
Ninjakamster (PS360 FTW!) @ Aug 21st 2008 11:02AM
I wonder if the battery life will be improved further in these new models as well? I was hoping they'd use a matte finish on the black color especially but oh well.
And I was thinking of getting the GOW bundle to replace my slightly broken Daxter bundle, glad I waited for this one.
Psaakyrn @ Aug 21st 2008 11:03AM
What I'm most happy about is that new version usually means old version firesale.
juju187 @ Aug 21st 2008 11:04AM
could i just have 2x the ram...
deaftly @ Aug 21st 2008 11:06AM
And twice the dead pixels!
Noshino @ Aug 21st 2008 11:34AM
I have had no dead pixels with my previous PSPs, so that means that this one also has...0 dead pixels?
Rowdehaj @ Aug 21st 2008 11:35AM
Just like the DS lite, which I got replaced twice when I bought it.
Dirty @ Aug 21st 2008 11:07AM
Damn.. I just traded my wii for a psp. Wish I would have waited for this one. Oh well.
Kris @ Aug 21st 2008 11:10AM
I hope they coated the screen with the same thing they put on the blue ray discs.
BPMOmega [gamertag] @ Aug 21st 2008 3:48PM
That's... actually a pretty good idea.
Jacksons @ Aug 21st 2008 11:11AM
Good for new owners. It seems like a solid upgrade, but I can't justify buying another one when my 2000 works fine.
mocax @ Aug 21st 2008 11:16AM
That japanese page says "reponse speed 2 multiples"
Speed != Time
notnato @ Aug 21st 2008 11:31AM
that would be the correct answer. doubled response "speed" not response "time".
NecronomiconUK @ Aug 21st 2008 11:25AM
I like my nicely hacked launch PSP-1000. I was really unimpressed by the 'feel' of the 2000s, felt very cheap and the piano black finish was just nasty. If these feel a bit better and get hacked soon then I wouldn't mind upgrading.
Ghaleon @ Aug 21st 2008 11:28AM
I can't believe they made it that bad in the first place. They lag like hell. At least FINALLY they did something about it, even though it'll need 0 lag before I ever got one.
Loi @ Aug 21st 2008 11:48AM
0 lag? I assume you mean 0 response time? If so please point me to an LCD with 0 response time. :D
Ghosting could be annoying, but I found that was worse with darker games like Syphon Filter (is that it's name? Can't remember!) some MGS:PO levels and some videos. Was never a dealbreaker, but sounds sexy.
Having bought PSP-1000 for homebrew, loved it and passed on, then bought PSP-2000 for MGS:PO, PS3 connectivity (disappointing, but occasionally fun to control the music wirelessly from the garden!) and then passed THAT on, I suppose this is coming at a good time as I really need to give Crisis Core a good go.
But I swear, if another killer app shows up on the PSP after that they better be bringing out a PSP-4000 else I'll be angry!
jcd @ Aug 21st 2008 11:49AM
soo... I wonder if it will still be hackable?
Fernando Rocker @ Aug 21st 2008 11:54AM
Of course... that's the main selling point.
Fenix @ Aug 21st 2008 12:09PM
Is it? o_O
Yeah, I'm gonna say thats pretty much incorrect.
BPMOmega [gamertag] @ Aug 21st 2008 3:51PM
I dunno, Fernando might be onto something...
While PSP hardware sales have been pretty good... software, not so much (despite the fact it has a lot of great games). That is, unless your name is "Monster Hunter" or "Phantasy Star" and you live in Japan...
I wouldn't be surprised if a large portions of PSPs in the wild are running custom firmware.
MrBlank @ Aug 21st 2008 5:59PM
If it's hackable, I just might get one. The motion blur on the 1000's screen is horrible.
You can do so much more with a hacked PSP and it's pretty easy to do. Why wouldn't someone want to hack it?
heyo007 @ Aug 21st 2008 11:59AM
*Phew*
Am I glad that I didn't buy the God of War Red PSP Bundle now. PSP-3000, here we come!
AwesomeTown @ Aug 21st 2008 12:02PM
This in the R&C bundle is looking mighty fine. Seems like a nice holiday present to me from myself.
Spirit @ Aug 21st 2008 12:10PM
I'm still on my launch day PSP. Works fine.
LordChimp @ Aug 21st 2008 12:26PM
I have my PSP when they launched the Giga pack back in 2005. I would like to pick up the new and improved version but mine still works great. No need to change.
browntown @ Aug 21st 2008 12:14PM
I kinda want one of these, there seem to be some cool games coming (even though they are very far spaced between eachother), it would also work well with my ps3, but i need a 360 also, and im not paying 40 bucks for a psp game.
Phantom @ Aug 21st 2008 12:53PM
would you like to pay 60 bucks for a console game.
CzAr @ Aug 21st 2008 12:42PM
I got the PSP Phat, 2 years ago, PSP2000 last year, and will get PSP3000 this year.
Phantom @ Aug 21st 2008 12:53PM
May i ask why you need three of them ?
Shimrra @ Aug 21st 2008 1:16PM
Who cares!! It looks exactly the same. I want games for my PSP. After God of War there isnt anything else that matches that caliber. The FF game is alright but damn does GoW spoil you with its full richness.
dom @ Aug 21st 2008 2:16PM
ummm, i may be wrong here but I just bought a psp slim last week and did quite a bit of research regarding custom firmware. The newest revisions of the 2001 can not use the Pandora battery at all. Don't you guys think that this update is actually just to remove the ability to hack the machine?
They make a few very modest improvements but the real differences are in the motherboard. I smell a trojan horse on this one. Glad I got my slim when I did
