It should really be seen in high-def.
Bucket @ Aug 21st 2008 6:08PM
I'm sure this CGI trailer is impressive and all, but what kind of MMO is this going to be? I doubt there'll be large-scale free-for-all combat like the trailer suggests.
At least not in a "hey look I can do more than click on macros" sort of way.
phobic99 @ Aug 21st 2008 6:21PM
While not exactly free-for-all, there are large scale battles in a Team-vs-team format (also known as Realm vs Realm; good vs evil basically) and it's been fairly fun in beta thus far. This MMO is a cousin to Dark Age of Camelot which also had Realm vs Realm combat.
Arttemis @ Aug 21st 2008 6:40PM
If the RvR is anything like DAoC, you could easily be picked up in a 100+ battlegroup, running through enemy keeps and choke points, and wind up in a 100v100 scattered brawl against people trying to defend their relics.
Large-scale free-for-all combat is what Mythic does best.
Emceay @ Aug 21st 2008 7:49PM
Oh, but then it wouldn't be a $15/month epic waste of time.
fischju @ Aug 21st 2008 6:18PM
This trailer leaves me disillusioned with MMOs, these graphics are perfectly within the realm of the 4870's power
loof @ Aug 21st 2008 6:22PM
Neat, but WoW:WotLK was waaay better even if it was less action-y. WoW's give you some back story and a possible glimpse of enemies you'll see in the game. All this does is show you some people dying and which as Bucket said likely won't be very representative of the actual combat.
Decanus @ Aug 21st 2008 6:45PM
lol Warhammer has more story per race than the entire story of warcraft as a whole.
dark_inchworm @ Aug 21st 2008 7:44PM
@ Decanus: uh lol... whatever you say, buddy.
UltimateQ @ Aug 21st 2008 7:45PM
Wow Deac, way to shoot in the dark. He never mentioned the amount of story content for the game/series. He was comparing the 2 trailers. And I agree, the WoTLK trailer was a bit more impressive.
I enjoy the story of Warcraft (pre-WoW) as a whole. I think WC3 had a very driving story, and it was 80% of the reason I played through the game and the expansion. Now I am curious about WoTLK to see some continuation, I am afraid it might suck though do to the need of adapting it to a game.
I've gone off on a tangent. This comment section is meant for discussing this trailer.
I did enjoy this trailer, it was well put together. But it just seemed flashy, I wonder how well the game play actually matches that.
Arttemis @ Aug 22nd 2008 1:14AM
"I wonder how well the game play actually matches that."
Probably no closer than WoW's first cinematic... which contained about as much story as this one for WAR.
kaktus @ Aug 22nd 2008 2:37PM
Well, after looking through both vids I can't really understand your comment. WAR shows you a huge number of enemies (regardless if you inclined to evil or good). Both contains roughly equal of "story" and both are very impressive CGI-movies. Looking at the background for the two gaming worlds, WAR gets me almost drooling. Warhammer has easily one of the best worlds ever created, hope the MMO can deliver.
@dark_inchworm: Sorry, but WoW can't compete with a world that has been existing for 25 years in both tabletop, RPG and computer-game format.
Ralod @ Aug 21st 2008 6:29PM
Disappointing video, for a disappointing game.
FOXHOUND @ Aug 22nd 2008 7:24AM
I was disappointed when they went with WH instead of WH40k for their choice in MMO. :\
Ghen @ Aug 21st 2008 6:33PM
Holy crap that was an awesome CG.
And fischju, WAR will have hundreds of player characters on screen at one time, each with different armor and different body sizes/looks. Maybe the 4870 can handle 5 characters in real time, or 3 + a dragon... but not hundreds.
Not to mention the market for MMOs is with gamers that can't or don't purchase high end computers where the graphics card costs more than a PS3.
Jon2309 @ Aug 21st 2008 6:36PM
Reminded me quite a lot of the WoW/TBC cinematics, which since it's establishing itself as an MMO is a good thing.
Although the cinematic looks really nice IMO, I'm still really iffy about the cutbacks made. I'll be waiting a while.
Giroro @ Aug 21st 2008 10:22PM
Need a dispenser Here!
RikuRik @ Aug 21st 2008 11:23PM
WAR's trailer wins, I love WoW but damn, that fucking rocked the ever-loving sense out of WoW. Definetly buying this game to replace WoW.
fred @ Aug 22nd 2008 12:06AM

Jeff @ Aug 22nd 2008 12:17AM
Squig armor ftw!
Chapstickduck @ Aug 22nd 2008 1:50AM
...needs more cowbell
Stogie @ Aug 22nd 2008 2:20AM
Warhammer wins. That Lord of Change (the big daemon at the end) was kick ass.
Ubiqutous Oxymoron @ Aug 22nd 2008 4:19AM
Greater Daemon of Tzeentch ftw!
ThornedVenom (Harley Quinn Defense Force) @ Aug 22nd 2008 2:54AM
As a cinematic, I have to admit that it looks so terribly AWESOME.
I want to play as that funny goblin now. XD
Ugkul @ Aug 22nd 2008 3:01AM
I thought WotLK was kinda short, and you kinda know how it's going to go after the first two seconds. WAR's trailer was fun to watch, just to see what happens next.
Baineblade @ Aug 22nd 2008 4:18AM
To be honest, though I've enjoyed WoW for whatever time I've played it. Warhammer has always been a passion with me. I've always loved the Dwarves. Even though they didn't put in a Slayer Class which kinda stinks. I hate to say this but WoW is out of here if this game is good enough.
Trang @ Aug 22nd 2008 6:26AM
We all know and love how good blizzard cinematics are, but in this precise situation, Warhammer Online intro was waaay better in my opinion.
WotLK's was good, but it was a bit short for my taste; plus, WO's vid was a lot more complicated, had a lot of stuff going on and lots of things moving and flying and fighting and... well you get the idea.
Zsavior @ Aug 22nd 2008 11:03AM
Yea as cinematics go Warhammer killed the wow one. It was insane.
CrazyKinux @ Aug 22nd 2008 11:57AM
Now THAT, was truly epic!
rbtroj @ Aug 22nd 2008 11:58AM
... and nothing in the actual game will ever be as cool as what we see in that trailer.
Games are hyping themselves to death STILL.
Giante @ Aug 26th 2008 11:22AM
After playing the beta for a little while, this trailer is actually pretty faithful to the game. Sure its got stellar graphics, but its visuals are way closer to whats in-game then WoW's cinematics will ever be. All the magic and machines you see here are actually castable/usable in the game. All the armor you see is actually what it looks like in-game and you can actually look like everyone you see in the trailer. The game simply rocks.
Sure the new WotLK trailer is nice, but it is short, and predictable, and it doesn't tell you anything about whats going to happen when you play, except that Arthas will be there, and so will some frozen undead. After playing it's beta, it was good! but WAR is waaay more enjoyable.
Sifuente @ Aug 29th 2008 2:40AM
Imo the wow cinematic is better. When looking at a cinematic, I seek not only the graphics, char moves, fights etc etc etc...but also the essence of the video. I think the wotkl is way better because when u listen to King Terenas's words it makes u think of the entire Warcraft story of what Arthas was, and what he became, and the way that happend, and why it did happend. Makes u think a bit aslo at RL, because the advice King Terenas gives is at some point a good RL advice...anyway I think it is far more interesting and important then to see 6 chars fight eachother and bullets, and arrows and magic and so on...
Slang @ Oct 24th 2008 9:38AM
Both trailers are good technically. The WAR one is a new game and needs to showcase the classes, and that was done very well. It also tells a short backstory.
WoW is at a different point in it's life, this is just for an expansion. They are telling you a story about WotLK, not introducing a game. You are right, they are drawing on the previous history of the game.
Both good imo, I do favor the WAR one a little more though. The scene with the Bright Wiz is sweet. Those are actual spells (in game) they are casting too.
