X08: Duke Nukem 3D coming to XBLA 'sometime in September'

In an interview with Xbox representative Jason Ing, it was revealed to Joystiq that Duke Nukem 3D, developed by 3D Realms, has passed certification and is expected to release "sometime in September." The Xbox Live Arcade revival, which sports the same minimal graphical enhancements as Doom did on the service, is being published by Microsoft and is an exclusive release for the platform.

Strikes me as one of those games better left in its current place in history. No XBLA release necessary. It use to have a place in my heart, but I imagine it'd only be entertaining for a minute or two.

Now if they could just come out with an XBLA version of Jones in the Fast Lane...

There's really no good way to play Duke3D online today. That is, getting an online game going on PC today is a major pain in the ass at best, and completely broken at worst. Even after getting 4 or 5 people installed w/ the right patches the game is still majorly prone to desyncs and crashes. It really doesn't work.

The new version gives online coop, party systems, replays, "tivo", cam support, leadboards, etc. Its so rich and full featured that its definitely worth the port.

In terms of the game itself, pipeboms and tripmines never get old.

It damned well better. I have fond memories of playing DN3D against my friends after school via direct dial up. We only had a few hours to play because the parents would come home and bitch about us tying up the phone lines. Of course, this was all after having to walk uphill both ways to school while being careful not to get picked off by a passing pterosaur.

Doom had graphical enhancements? It's pretty disappointing if this is just a straight port, I hope there's *something* that would entice me to buy it, I played it to death twelve years ago. I was sort of looking forward to it, but I don't know if I wanna drop $10 on a lame port.

I played it today at x08. Only for a minute tho. I had some difficulty climbing the first boxed area. Turning felt really slow, but i never checked setting to see if you could tweak it.

I can confirm there is NO splitscreen. Me and my friend wanted to play together but couldnt because of this. There is online and system link co-op however, but your limited to 1 player per system. And I cant remeber right, but I think i saw more then 4 slots in the system link lobby. I think the game supports 16 players.

The Duke is old, it's time to move on, even the new Duke has been in production way too long to hold any anticipation/hype for. *sigh* I gave up when the 3rd person iteration came out, enough of this, i'll just settle for Grand Theft Auto, it's just as demeaning.
