Building on reports of an impending Xbox 360 price cut, which allegedly will drop the Arcade SKU below Wii to $199, comes the reemergence of Microsoft's elusive motion controller, now rumored to be included with the Xbox 360 Arcade this holiday. A source "close to Microsoft's marketing department" detailed the bundle to X3F, claiming the new Arcade system will feature a 512MB memory card (in place of a hard drive), the New Xbox Experience pre-loaded and a motion controller, along with a few compatible minigames developed by Rare.
The motion controller supposedly will be sold separately as well, in a package that includes even more minigames. The controller is said to be compatible with all versions of Xbox 360. So how 'bout it, Nintendo -- you gonna trump this by tacking on HD?

I'm going to call false because we should've heard about it already. Microsoft would be dumb to release a motion controller without any buildup first.

Where's the "I don't give a crap about motion controls" list so I can sign up?
Sorry, but I see motion controls as 10% of the time being worthwhile, 80% of the time being a wholehearted gimmick, and 10% tacked on just for the sake of adding a "Has motion controls" bullet point or check box on the back of the package.
I expect motion controls to go away, and that day can't come soon enough. Maybe I'm just a purist at heart, but I still don't care about motion controls. Even though I did buy a Wii, for all intents and purposes "to see what the fuss was about".

Nobody in the market for a Wii will buy a 360 Arcade over a Wii.
Buying a 360 Arcade would mean you are settling for not getting a Wii and that is something people aren't willing to do.

I'll believe it when I see it.
I own a Wii and I hate it. There aren't any good games on it; and if a motion controller means that crappy games will flood the Xbox, I just might give up gaming.

The only 2 consoles of this generation that have stayed true to their roots are the Wii and PS3... Wii started off for the 'casual market' with the price and features of the console, and PS3 started off for the 'performance' market with higher price but better technological hardware.
The Xbox360 since the start was a 'hardcore console' that went to being a 'media center' then to a 'gaming console where the best games are' then to 'a family friend console for casual gamers'. This is hurting it's image in the public's eyes, because they just don't know what they are getting anymore, or why they are getting it. The different consoles don't help, as that seems to be confusing customers, while Xbox360 JUST HAD a price cut a month or two ago, now 3 months later they announce another price drop... this makes anyone who buys an Xbox360 weary that this cycle will continue again, as Microsoft tries to flip-flop their image into whatever Nintendo seems to be doing.
I haven't seen this much flip-flop since the Beachwear sale at JCPenny.™
(you all can use that) :D

Yes, the people that already have an Xbox360 or know already they are getting an Xbox360 don't care (obviously they just wanted the Xbox360).
I'm talking about new buyers. The market Xbox360 is trying to target (Nintendo's market) doesn't seem to be the market that enjoys having overly complicated hardware options.
example: casual market customer goes in, sees a nice white box with the blue writing Wii on it... easy enough, wow it even comes with a game.
now same customer moves over to the Xbox360 department, sees 3 different boxes, needs a road map as to why he needs a hard drive, or doesn't, what games will work on it, or won't, why the 120G hard drive is better than the 60G hard drive, etc...
It's hard to think about these things, as 99% of people that come to this website know a lot about videogames, so the idea as to why a 120gig hdd is better than a 60gig is obvious... but to the casual market, it's just an added nuance that they would rather do without.
That's my opinion, I'm not saying it's fact.

you're absolutely right chukz, the majority of consumers who are interested in games in the slightest don't know anything. It takes a geek squad representative's advice for them to figure out which is bigger, 120gb or 60gb. And who even knows what games are played on which systems. it's so hard to see the games sitting next to the console in behind those big glass doors.

My sarcasm meter is reading MAX, so I will have to explain what I wrote.
First, anyone with a grade 3 education will tell you 120 is bigger than 60, that's NOT the problem, the problem is telling Casual Shopper Mom that this new Xbox360 system is only $199... then she sees a 60gig hard drive and asks why the $199 doesn't have it, so the aforementioned GeekSquad rep will tell her that she can do more with the 60gig hard drive, then she asks about the 120, "do i really need 120gig instead of 60? I came in not knowing it came with a hard drive at all... billy didn't tell me which one to buy" etc... that's is probably the way it goes... Mom knows 120 is bigger than 60, but now the GeekSquad has to chime in on WHY they think she should spend the extra money to buy it, if it's even worth it, or what.
The 2nd point about the games is another obvious one. Yeah she will see RARE's minigame fest, but when she wants more, she probably won't be looking for Halo or GTA IV as a replacement. She can READ that they are for Xbox360, but she may not be that interested in the Xbox360 Arcade, if for an extra $50 she can get a system where the majority of the games are minigames. That's what I meant by that.
I hope this clears it up. I'm sorry if I caused any confusion. Again this is only my opinion, I don't treat this as fact. The reason I chose a "she" character is because that is the target the Wii seems to be going for that Xbox wants to target as well (casual market, non-gamers, etc...).

That really makes no sense.. If a mom walked in and asked for a PS3.. she would be offered with what? 5 SKU's? That's over the top.. and she would be confused out of her mind.. Especially if like 2-3 of the SKU's are priced relatively close to each other.

its more about RROD, that people doubt about getting a 360, plus playing for online its not good.
How would microsoft win others.
1- Add waggle
2- Lower the price (more emphasis in hard drive and wireless)
3- Fix RROD
4- Improve the crappy dpad
5- Put xbox Live for free

Not likely. Here it is almost September and no official word yet. Where's the hype? After the Wii was shown hands on at E3 people went nuts over it and Nintendo increased its production for launch (lol?)
You can't just drop something like that right before the Holiday season and say, "OK, here it is."
Especially if you want to try and compete with the Wii.

How can Microsoft be proud of this announcement? They should just stick with what they do best. Wait a minute, they are doing just that, by copying and stealing ideas.

Microsoft should have copied the motion controller as soon as Nintendo announced it.
NOW, if this rumor is true, I hope that the MS Motion controller has all the same buttons as the normal controller. That way buying one could be a second or third controller for Xbox360 owners and it would ensure that all games could support both types of controls.
And hopefully, if the motion controller is good enough, maybe we will get ports of the "better" 3rd party WII titles...

WOW!!!
You guys are nutz.. does ANYONE have any sense around here.
Why is it wrong to take someones idea and make it better?
What about the Darwin controller (google it). It works as motion controller for 360 right now. Why couldnt microsoft make some deal (like they always do) with the makers of that controller to make it function better (like the wii controller with the add on) than the wii controller, have rare make casual games for it to show its potential, then of course EA and Activision jump on to make games for it. With the capability to make high HD quality or casual games for it. The decision will be left up to the developer. You still get your HD triple A games (Gears, fable, Halo's). And you get your high quality casuals. Rare selling the new Banjo and Viva pinata @ 39.99 for the casual. You cannot as a gamer think this is a bad idea. Whats wrong with innovation. I think MS is the one pushing Video gaming to the next level. Ive been gaming for a LOOOONG time and havent seen gaming invade the mainstream like this EVER. you can say whatever you want about Nintendo. But if there was NO xbox. We would still be playing by ourselves, or in Lan parties. Xbox live changed the industry, PS3 didnt care about online, neither did nintendo.
Out of all three of the systems who innovating and whose following.
If I was MS and Nintendo was pulling in hoards of money based on a motion controller (cause it cant be the games), and I thought I could bring a better experience by adding a few features and sell it cheaper. Why not?
MS redesigned the WHOLE dashboard system, all that work to make it better for you and people were crying.
No one is ever satified.
It would be nice if they added a Blu-ray add on though..
Dont hate on it until you try it.

The rate at which Rare games are referred to as 'high quality' typically drops significantly once they reach the market.
PS3 didn't care about online? Even the PS2 had internet play before the Xbox. Dreamcast too. Don't try to pretend Microsoft invented internet play. You want to say MS did it better, that's fine, but to say we would still be playing alone without MS is ridiculous.

Think about one game coming soon that hasn't been hyped to bejebus and back since May.
Gears of War 2, Little Big Planet, what have you.
Do you think any company would decide on a major hardware investment and focus shift, hide it better than anything they've ever hidden before, then spring it on an unassuming public?
Does that sound like it would be a successful strategy?
Just saying it kinda doesn't hold together.

I don't see this competing with the Wii. If they do release a Wiimote knockoff with some mini games, casual gamers still aren't going to get the attention from Microsoft that they get from Nintendo.

However, your definition of good must be wider than my own. This list feels a bit... padded.
Wii Play? Link's Crossbow Training? Honestly.
That aside, your 'list wars' style post adds nothing to the discussion about the rumored Xbox 360 motion controller that this article addresses.

Arnon this is like the third time I seen you talking about PS3 having to many SKU'S
PS3 SKU'S- 80gb and 80gb BC with MGS4(getting discontinued) and 160gb. So thats 2 SKU'S
360 SKU'S- Pro, Arcade, and Elite. Thats 3 SKU'S
Hmmm you do the math 3>2
As for 360 getting blu-ray whenever. Its possible perhaps, but Sony is a sponsor for Blu-ray. So they do have a say in it.
Or they could just fully copyright Blu-Ray. But Sony never pays for things to be exclusive.
Microsoft cannot just go and get Blu-Ray and put it on 360 whenever. They gotta get permission and sign papers and stuff >_>
You made it sound so easy, which it REALLY isn't.

Sorry dude
Completely wrong about that blu-ray thing but they would still have to strike a deal with the Blu-Ray Association or whatever they're called.
But I read an article about 360 not needing blu-ray because HD-DVD is doing good and due to 360's upcoming install feature.
But hey who knows, M-soft can give 360 blu-ray whenever they're ready. IF they're ready.
