Watch the birth of a LittleBigPlanet player-made stage
In the beginning, Media Molecule made LittleBigPlanet. But the levels were barren and flat, and devoid of obstacles, so the player moved upon the face of the level creation system. And the player said, "Let there be swinging, spongy balls," and there were swinging, spongy balls. And the player saw the swinging, spongy balls, that they were good, and he divided the swinging, spongy balls from the electrified floor.
If you needed any more proof that LittleBigPlanet's level creation system is going to be mind-blowingly robust, (though arguably less robust then the level creation system discussed in Genesis), we turn your attention to the video posted after the break -- a time-lapse sneak preview of a player crafting his own level. It's a pretty clever design, and looks like a blast -- best of all, it only took about ten minutes. That kind of thing apparently used to take seven days. Thanks, technology!

Is it just me or is it weird that this game looks much better than the PS3's big budget titles.
Dr. @ Aug 24th 2008 12:17PM
I'd agree. So far this is the only game that has made me wish I had a PS3. I'm seriously considering it at this point, but there's still a few issues. (Price, back compat, and also I'm already using my TV's two HDMI inputs... :P )
Myke @ Aug 24th 2008 12:23PM
This IS one of the PS3's big budget titles...
I would bet the amount of $ they've dropped on this beast far outweighs something like Haze or Lair by a long shot.
Mr Khan @ Aug 24th 2008 1:17PM
Haze maybe. Lair probably not. Factor 5 went all-out, though Media Create did too, but Little Big Planet is less heavy on the art assets and number of objects, since its built as a custom game anyway
Not to belittle it, but it definitely cost a lot less than some of the PS3's other heavy-hitters
Tiptup300 @ Aug 24th 2008 4:42PM
Your tv only has two hdmi ports!? What are you mcfly!?
Arthur @ Aug 24th 2008 12:14PM
The pants have been creamed.
And yes, I also find this game to have some of the best graphics around. Aweeezomeee.
Spirit @ Aug 24th 2008 12:17PM
I'm just making sure, does this game have enemies or not?
bigD @ Aug 24th 2008 12:41PM
Yes the game does have enemies. Also you can attach a "brain" to your creations to make enemies of your own.
reuben_yap @ Aug 24th 2008 12:22PM
The Genesis joke made me lol. My hype for LBP is beyond all forms or normality at the moment..
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread) @ Aug 24th 2008 1:27PM
lol me too. and on a Sunday no less.
Jakka(Naked Peach Brigade) @ Aug 24th 2008 1:48PM
...and on the 7th day, God was playing Spore.
DeltaP42 @ Aug 24th 2008 12:25PM
Thank god the PS3 supports USB keyboard/mouse, it'll make level creation 10X faster... hopefully.
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread) @ Aug 24th 2008 1:32PM
one can only hope.
Jakka(Naked Peach Brigade) @ Aug 24th 2008 1:45PM
10x is a bit of an overkill.I doubt you can make macros etc. so keyboard will be on par with useless. As for mouse it will definitely be very precise and smooth out all the movement but you'll still have to go through hundreds bitchin' menus :(
Still, it's better than the kind of shit that normal users(aka DS3/SIXAXIS owners) will have to go through.
NecronomiconUK @ Aug 24th 2008 1:52PM
All controlled via Sixaxis/DS3, the UI has been designed around that so a mouse would be a bit pointless. Can use a keyboard for typing in text or naming levels and such but that's about it.
rask @ Aug 24th 2008 12:37PM
You all do realise that this was sped up quite a bit and it took them probably the better part of an hour to make a level that can be played in 10 seconds or so..
I forsee a lot of people playing the 60 or so pre-made levels, messing around with the creator for 15-30 minutes and them moving back to CoD4 or on to SOCOM.
SuperGayParade @ Aug 24th 2008 12:52PM
Not everyone is as uninspired as you are.
tmacairjordan87 @ Aug 24th 2008 1:04PM
"You all do realise that this was sped up quite a bit and it took them probably the better part of an hour to make a level that can be played in 10 seconds or so"
What??? Here I thought it was someone actually moving that fast. Way to crush my dreams.
Jakka(Naked Peach Brigade) @ Aug 24th 2008 1:23PM
I do see your point, but know that as long as there are nerds, there will always be somebody willing to spend some more time on it and create some awesome maps.
Vidikron (FU) @ Aug 24th 2008 1:27PM
The same can be said of any of the good levels you find for PC game with level editors. The good levels are always going to take some time create. Thankfully there are people out there willing to do that.
DanB91 @ Aug 24th 2008 2:02PM
I guess you conveniently skipped over this part.
"It's a pretty clever design, and looks like a blast -- best of all, it only took about ten minutes."
Read before posting. Thanks
Red_Robot @ Aug 24th 2008 2:11PM
Yeah, I get what you mean, and that describes what I would do with it.
(I don't know why this was voted down, he has a point.)
Luckily, I can benefit from the more creative members of the community that will spring up around this game.
I'd buy it to play other people's awesome levels more than I would to create my own.
Jakka(Naked Peach Brigade) @ Aug 24th 2008 2:24PM
Mind you, spawning four swinging spongy balls,an electrified floor and a background with five stickers on it, isn't much of an achievement either.
I don't agree with all of what he says but he does have a point.I could do something like this on GMod using ropes and some props and it would take me far less time than ten minutes.
Jakka(Naked Peach Brigade) @ Aug 24th 2008 2:28PM
Ech...goddamitt...that was directed at Dan.
Eggy @ Aug 25th 2008 8:03AM
10 minutes actually.
Jacksons @ Aug 24th 2008 12:40PM
It reminds me of playing Sonic 2 with the debug cheat and going nuts with the springs...or encasing Tails in spikes. Nobody likes you, Tails.
RoboChamp @ Aug 24th 2008 1:20PM
lol
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread) @ Aug 24th 2008 1:30PM
...i like tails. :_(
Tiptup300 @ Aug 24th 2008 8:52PM
I remember before I knew the cheat, if you jiggled the game when it first started it would sometimes do something like debug mode....if the developers were on speed and heroin.
K2Valor @ Aug 24th 2008 12:40PM
it has enemies. you create your own.
Curmeo @ Aug 24th 2008 12:48PM
looks amazing. Sony please release LittleBigPlanet Portable so we can create levels on the go on our PSPs and wifi them to our PS3s.
Curmeo @ Aug 24th 2008 2:00PM
btw anyone know why my pic wont upload?
Maverick Saturn @ Aug 24th 2008 4:09PM
It has, its a black square :)
Mr Khan @ Aug 24th 2008 7:03PM
non-supported file format
Or it got corrupted in the upload process. This avatar system is finnicky as hell
Jakka(Naked Peach Brigade) @ Aug 24th 2008 7:27PM
No! It's him again!
...though on reflection you're nowhere near as annoying as El Serpiente.
Welcome Back!
el serpiente @ Aug 24th 2008 7:42PM
Aww, I see the beginnings of a crush...
Sorry Jakka, I only date women who are well beyond puberty.
Curmeo @ Aug 25th 2008 6:18AM
i uploaded a 3.6kB 128x108 jpg sackboy pic but it shows a black square instead. even tried reuploading it, wierd. i wonder if it needs to be 64x64 pixels or maybe cuz im using linux?
Wiizer @ Aug 24th 2008 12:57PM
though arguably less robust then
THAN... just sayin'.
SpikeDelight @ Aug 24th 2008 12:59PM
This video is awesome it really makes me want to play the game!
freecajunlove @ Aug 24th 2008 12:59PM
That kind of looked like 3 people were making the level. Wish I could see the rest of the video...
Maverick Saturn @ Aug 24th 2008 2:45PM
3 people were making the level :S
freecajunlove @ Aug 24th 2008 3:07PM
Then it should read "a time-lapse sneak preview of players crafting their own level."
So it took three people 10 minutes to create that?
Robust? Yes. Fast? Not really.
I'll still probably sink in a few hours on it though.
Jakka(Naked Peach Brigade) @ Aug 24th 2008 1:29PM
The editor could definitely do great things, but it seems very unintuitive and confusing.Maybe it's just the side-effect of the time lapse, but it feels like all they did was simply dig through more and more menus.
Speaking of which, it really took them a lot of time and work to create such a tiny level...hopefully they still have time to do something about it.
Maverick Saturn @ Aug 24th 2008 2:48PM
Im guessing it isn't as hard as it looks, the devs have made that clear one too many times and the beta testers, those lucky bastard reviers who got to test it out etc also said its easier to use then looks.
But if a person can spend ages making lets say a level in Halo 3, a creature in spore, designing your perfect car in Forza or what not all without gaining a single thing from any of it, why not create something with your mates in LBP?
firesign3000 @ Aug 24th 2008 2:50PM
the article said it took 10 minutes. 10 minutes != a long time.
do you people even read the posts before commenting?
Jakka(Naked Peach Brigade) @ Aug 24th 2008 3:21PM
@ Firesign
I did read it.And ten minutes does = a long time as I could create something like this in GMod in less than that. And mind you, doing that in GMod is probably a lot harder than in LBP.
(And I know I've already used this analogy put it's probably as good as it gets.)
el serpiente @ Aug 24th 2008 3:55PM
Cakka is really trying very hard to find something to bitch about...
Jakka(Naked Peach Brigade) @ Aug 24th 2008 5:30PM
Yes, El Cerpiente.
What sets us apart is the fact that I can back up my arguments, I don't troll and when I'm arguing over something, I tend to focus on the main points instead of just shitting all over the author of these points.
PS: How am I "trying really hard"? I played the video, and I saw a cluster fuck of menus. So I wrote down my observation.Same way I saw I've read your comment and realised you're a massive fanboy which I am right now pointing out, too.
PS2: Too Human is still better than H4.5ze will ever be.
Maverick Saturn @ Aug 24th 2008 7:03PM
Lol, they both suck in my opinion, who cares which persons excretion looks better, the fact still remains that they are excretion.
Jakka(Naked Peach Brigade) @ Aug 24th 2008 7:23PM
First of all, Too Human doesn't suck.75% is faaaar from a bad game. And this is just a reference to that time he called Haze infinitely better than Too Human, claiming that we're just jealous coz we can't get it on 360.He even called Anticrawl a troll :-)
I'm not sure how a person like that can accuse me of trolling.Especially that I LIKE LITTLEBIGPLANET!
