Wasn't Wii supposed to be the system for First Person Shooters? Set to nullify the debate on mouse and keyboard vs controller, many fans of the genre predicated that Nintendo's system would host the best shooters available. Perhaps due to graphical limitations or the ever-present casual/hardcore issue, it seems that the biggest and best shooters have gone to the other guys. While Metroid Prime 3 was a modest success and The Conduit has been turning heads, it seems that this generation of consoles is not going to be remembered as the generation in which Nintendo dominated the FPS.
And despite the lure of titles like Resistance: Fall of Man, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and Halo 3, it's the aptly-named Orange Box that is perhaps the grandest FPS currently available. I say this because I was fortunate enough to have played through Half-Life 2 on the original Xbox. Though it took a little while to get hooked, it refused to let go once I was. There's nothing supremely innovative happening throughout the games present (yes, that includes Portal's teleporting gameplay). Instead, they are just magnificently well-made. Anyone can appreciate quality and beauty, and The Orange Box presents this in ten-fold.
