Joystiq hands-on: Killzone 2 multiplayer

We were told about the Squad system, which allows players to form 4-man groups mid-game. Doing so will show your squadmates' health bars, allow you a private headset channel and let you use the squad leader as a spawn point, keeping you together constantly. Setting up squads is easily done in the spawn menu. When a player receives a squad invite, they will receive a flashing notification. Accepting or declining takes only a couple of button presses from that point, making sure you're kept in the game at all times.
Guerilla Games also ran through the extensive community features found in the game. Full clan support, featuring 64 players each, 16 vs 16 clan challenges, four separate leaderboards, a mind-boggling array of stats being tracked and a clan currency system. "Valor" is wagered by each clan at the start of inter-clan skirmishes, with the total being awarded to the winner. Earning valor will propel you up the leaderboards and the intention is to host official clan tournaments, made up of 256 clans, with the entire valor pot going to the overall winner.
Gallery: Killzone 2 (Leipzig 2008)
Community features are all very well, but without a game to back it up it's all a bit moot. Thankfully, Killzone 2 is an exceptional multiplayer experience. It's fast paced, frantic and, most importantly, fun. This is aided mostly by the class system, which adds a tremendous amount of depth to the game. You'll start life as a lowly soldier. No special abilities to your name, but you do have the best selection of weapons. Rising through the ranks will reward you with new "badges" (classes) at specific intervals. These have been strategically managed so that they are awarded in order, with those that affect gameplay least being the easiest to obtain.
We played at first as a Helghast scout; a three-eyed hooded assassin. With a sniper rifle. Each class has two abilities: A primary ability that's set in stone (invisibility, in our case) and a secondary ability which can be swapped out for any other class' secondary ability. We stuck with the scout's enemy location tagging. These skills may seem powerful, but they have their limitations. Whilst standing still our invisibility cloak works perfectly, but whilst moving the integrity of the invisibility weakens. Firing a weapon removes it completely and we can only reactivate it if the ability has refreshed, WoW style. All skills have a refresh period like this.

The level we played was pretty vast and, despite playing against Guerilla Games employees in Amsterdam, lag was non-existent. The graphics are indistinguishable from the single player gameplay and the motion blur and (incredibly) pretty explosions are ever-present. We've seen this game a few times now and we're still amazed by how good it looks whenever we get a chance to play. According to our copilot, Guerilla Games' Simon Larouche, the only limitation they have to take into account for multiplayer is destructibility. Physics objects such as locker doors will still exist in multiplayer, but fully destructible walls will not.
Team Deathmatch works via a tug-of-war style system. Each faction has a meter which shows how close they are to winning. The more enemies that are killed, the more your meter fills. Being killed reduces your team's meter, however, so if two opposing factions are equally matched the game could go on for quite a while. You won't mind, though. The class system allows you to mix up your gameplay style after any death, Team Fortress style.
The level was huge and, at first, a bit daunting. There were also a few frustrating moments when we were looking around for enemies for what felt like five minutes only to be shotgunned in the face when we found someone. Despite the lack of headsets, teamwork was prevalent with medics healing the wounded and team mates rushing to help those between a rock and a hard place. There's something about the game which makes you feel more connected to the others on your faction.
An open beta is on the cards, but won't be released until after the Resistance 2 and SOCOM betas, for obvious reasons. The game will not be suffering from any region locking – when you start a match you are the server, so anyone across the world can join. If you're searching for an already set-up online game, then the default is to be shown games in your territory, but you're also given the choice to search worldwide if you wish to.
Killzone 2's multiplayer is more than just a mere bullet point for the back of the box. Considering all the hype has been about the single player for so long, we never expected the multiplayer to be so fleshed out. It remains to be seen if Killzone 2 can trump Resistance 2's 60-player online battles or Call of Duty 4's stranglehold on gamer's multiplayer time, but Guerilla is putting up quite a fight.

Sounds like Bad Company mixed with CoD4...
Maybe this will lean me towards the PS3 side...
I'm having a blast with Bad Company.
Mr.ESC @ Aug 25th 2008 11:36AM
Is a great game but obtaining certain throphies is a b*tch and I really hate when in a match everyone is sniper leaving Assault as an useless class.
Tez (PSN: Tezasaurus) @ Aug 25th 2008 1:16PM
Sneaking around and knifing snipers is pretty easy, though. Even with the assault class, you can tag them from far off once or twice that will make them panic for a bit while you close the gap. I've never really encountered an abundance of them (the lack of a prone position seems to discourage the class) on the PS3 version.
Titanium_Orchid @ Aug 25th 2008 3:56PM
I agree with Tez. In a game full of snipers, an assault class can be effective if you know how to use it.
Also... Tez, you can go prone in COD4.

This is the first thing to get me excited about Killzone 2 since that ridiculous trailer back in 2005. Also, invisible snipers are going to seriously piss me off.
Raikage (GOLDEN Gun Of The Patriots) @ Aug 25th 2008 2:09PM
A REAL sniper doesn't need invisibility ;)
Extinction @ Aug 25th 2008 9:13PM
Um, it was nigh unanimous that the first trailer was pretty accurate
Agathos @ Aug 25th 2008 11:39AM
Oh wait wait wait, nevermind all these features and tweaks to the multiplayer and what looks like a truly exciting single player experience, this "just looks like another blah shooter, nothing new, blah blah" - just so I can beat all the 360 fanboys.
So I've got Gears 2, Fable, then Resistance 2, Motorstorm 2, and then KZ2 to look forward too just to name a few exclusives on each, good thing there's not a damn thing worth buying on the Wii for the longest time or else I'd be broke...
Jacksons @ Aug 25th 2008 11:43AM
I smell a list approaching...

Yeah actually let me clarify that I own Zela, Mario G, Paper Mario, Metroid, and then Smash Bros and Kart (these last two haven't been opened since I bought them), point was just that for the last several months and for the forseeable future there's been nothing worth buying.
I should also point out that this is a perfect time which I typically by up good ones that I missed at used/discount price: Boom Blox, Trauma Center, Strikers, etc.
Mr Khan @ Aug 25th 2008 5:30PM
No, he's *mostly* right. Aside from Wario Land and Animal Crossing, there's really nothing Wii exclusive worth looking at this fall/winter
That being said, Wii-only owners are getting perfectly acceptable and system-specific versions of the new CoD, Sonic Unleashed, and Force Unleashed, so its not as bad as one might think
Mr.ESC @ Aug 25th 2008 11:39AM
Team Fortress 2,B:BC and COD4 in one game huh so far it sounds pretty awesome but I just hope they use some color I really hated that COD4 and B:BC used such a limited amount of colors, I mean it is really hard to difference between Friend or Foe in B:BC.
GoldenS1104 @ Aug 25th 2008 12:23PM
That's one of the major problems I have with shooters today. It's no longer just about good reflexes and tight aiming. You also have to have unbelievable eyesight to differentiate enemies from friends and environmental objects. Sucks for some one who is color blind like me. >_
Killjebus @ Aug 25th 2008 12:30PM
Put up some Care Bears and rainbows around your Telle if you want color. War is a dirty business, and the last time I checked, when you blow/burn something...you get many shades of gray.
Don't fret though as I am sure we will see some more colorful environments as the release of this AAA draws closer.
Where o where are the naysayers now?
Hashbrown Hunter @ Aug 25th 2008 5:18PM
well thats one cool thing about KZ is that it uses a limited color palette to its advantage because you can see a Helghast coming because of his glowing red eyes. and if you're a helghast you'll know just to shoot anything thats not a freak.

this game is showing Too Human how to get it done right with a long development cycle. The only problem is the release date is 2009. It sounds like the multiplayer is already top notch and there will also be a day 1 patch! This game will be an all time classic shooter much like Gears & Halo.
Mr.ESC @ Aug 25th 2008 12:31PM
Wait wasn't KZ CGI trailer revealed in 05 making it's development circle something like something less than 4 years if it is released in February of 2009?...Just saying.
I’m sure the development circle of Too human was of 5 years but nevermind that since Too human is out place here and this could turn into one of those fanboy-ish arguments about why my console has a bigger dick than yours sort of thing or this could be plain hate to a game you have never played.
Immortal Technique PSN: johnnynumber5 @ Aug 25th 2008 1:52PM
I played Too Human. I have all 3 consoles so my console penis needs a reduction if anything. Great concept but terrible execution.
I lick shots for the revolution.
When im done You'll have to lip lock with hypodermic needles to lick shots.
You lick shots like Jenna Jameson in super head.
This game is going to set a new standard for console shooters. Can't wait for this one, socom and gears II. All will be truly epic.

This game seems to be leaning heavily on features. I'm liking how it's turning. Very promising. I find it pathetic how some of today's multiplayer games are so low on features. Glad this isn't one of them. Definitely picking this one up.
Neptune @ Aug 25th 2008 12:18PM
I like the badge idea because it reminds me of Guild Wars where the primary/secondary combination works really well. Though I would have hoped there had been more than just two abilities per badge.
GoldenS1104 @ Aug 25th 2008 12:20PM
Killzone 2 is surprising me. For a while I though it was only popular due to the hype created out of thin air (especially since Killzone 1 wasn't even good). Seeing this proves otherwise. It definitely has potential.
Tez (PSN: Tezasaurus) @ Aug 25th 2008 1:24PM
Killzone 1 was alright.
Hashbrown Hunter @ Aug 25th 2008 5:24PM
KZ1 was loud, stupid fun.
Killjebus @ Aug 25th 2008 12:22PM
My my my, how the tables have turned eh Joystiq/Kotaku? Try as they might...they just cannot find any reason to badmouth KZ2. Just another generic shooter right ladies?
KZ2 is only using 4 of the SPE's. What will an AAA developer be able to do when they use all 6? Just like b4 with the PS2, the PS3 is just getting started. By the end of the year everyone except the most die-hard MS fanboys will be clamoring for a PS3 under the tree.
As good as 2008 is looking for the PS3...2009 looks to be even better.
Now, don't you all look stupid for bashing the PS3 back in 2006/7. I said Sony will be fine, that the PS3 will show it's TRUE muscle, and when it is all said and done for this generation between MS and Sony...the PS3 will have the BIGGEST most diverse library of compelling and original games to go along with some of the most anticipated continuations of Sony franchises.
Thank you Sony for investing so much money in FIRST party studios. Sony saw that the 3rd party exclusives will be a thing of the past with MS buying up limited exclusivity left and right. Sony thinks in terms of 5-10 years while Nintendo and MS think of now to 2 years at most.
Kudos to MS for their great Live service, and also producing a machine of considerable power...not the level of PS3 of course but the 360 has shown that it can be the home of some gorgeous games.
Back in late 2006 for those of you who remember I said that Sony will be back on the minds of gamers and that sites like these will "forget" about all the bashing they did in 2007. I ALSO said that the WSM fad will last 2 years. Well, my first prediction is quickly coming to pass...and my second prediction is looking more and more like future reality.
HDTV's are 80%+ of ALL TV purchases. What do you want to see on your HDTV? 480p blurry garbage infested mini-games and Marios seeping out of every pixel or crystal clear games like Gears2, KZ2, LBP, Heavy Rain, GoW3, GT5, FF13 and so on.
I love being right.
Get off the bash the PS3 express...bridge out ahead.

max: true, but he's right. Personally, I just would have kept it to myself, though.
ESC: About FF13, you missed the point. He's just bringing up the quality titles for the system, most of which are exclusive. Also, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, who's publishing Killzone 2, says that it's going to be exclusive.
Jebus: I actually remember you saying that stuff earlier. Turns out you were right. Then again, anyone with a modicum of critical thinking skills should have come to the same conclusion (this excludes most of the Joystiq/Kotaku crowd). ;^)
Killjebus @ Aug 25th 2008 1:15PM
@Max
Yes, I could have kept it to myself, but I chose not to for the simple fact that sites like these and most of the comments relentlessly bashed the PS3 while gushing all over the WSM on a DAILY basis. So, when I was presented with an opportunity for an I told you so moment, I decided to take it.
"Then again, anyone with a modicum of critical thinking skills should have come to the same conclusion (this excludes most of the Joystiq/Kotaku crowd). ;^)"
Nice comment.
Hey Gabe, you still think the PS3 should be scrapped?
It's too hard to program for....whaaaah, I need the easy way to do everything.
Question,
How many of you out there STILL think that the WSM is revolutionary and NOT a repackaged GameCube with 50m accessories? Show of hands?

Jakka(Naked Peach Brigade) @ Aug 25th 2008 2:31PM
Wow...that was a really long comment full of really good points. But your hypothesis is only a moral victory.Right now, Sony is still losing money with
each PS3 sold and according to someone's calculations(It was Fernando I think...) it won't be able to outsell the 360 even if the sales still.
Still,my best wishes for PS3 and Sony as I'm hoping they'll drop the ridiculous prices outside of US.After all, the more competition between MS and Sony, the better for all of us gamers.
Also dude, what happened to you? The last time I remember you used to be a very obnoxious troll and now each of your comments gets 3 start. Congrats.
Vcize @ Aug 25th 2008 2:53PM
Considering how the previous Killzone game went down this exact same path prior to being released and it being a completely mediocre game, you MIGHT want to wait until this one actually comes out to start claiming about how you "love being right".
FFS dude, the game is still 6 months away and you're acting like you've been playing it for the last 5 years.
Vcize @ Aug 25th 2008 2:55PM
Btw, I do agree with you in general and am looking forward to this game. However, I'm just saying that a very hyped sequel to a very hyped letdown is not necessarily the best basis for making these points until you actually play the second gen version of that very hyped letdown and make sure it's not a repeat performance.
Vcize @ Aug 25th 2008 2:57PM
Jakka, his comments always got 3 stars....in PS3 articles (since more PS3 owners click there, it only makes sense).
Plus nowadays if you bash the Wii it's an instant 3 stars (and rightfully so).
Killjebus @ Aug 25th 2008 3:18PM
"FFS dude, the game is still 6 months away and you're acting like you've been playing it for the last 5 years."
The proof that this game will be AAA is the gushing over it by Kotaku/Joystiq who have been quick to bash Sony for any reason. If there were something to bitch about, it would be there.
The gameplay movies that have been released along with the developer walk-thrus tell me that this game will sell millions and move ALOT of hardware.
But you are right, I don't know for sure...just 99.9999999999999999999% sure.
Jakka(Naked Peach Brigade) @ Aug 25th 2008 3:37PM
Or maybe people don't directly bash KZ2 and Sony because the game is a little generic(as in "an ordinary shooter") right now and you really can't tell if it will turn out good or bad? It definitely looks good but so did the first Killzone.
Tephlon @ Aug 25th 2008 4:53PM
Killjebus,
While I'm sure your victory seems assured in your eyes because there were so many mindless fanboys willing to jump on the Sony hate train, your victory is only a partial one... mostly because a victory over the stupid is hardly a victory at all. Those of us who did not jump onto the 'cell train' did so with knowledge and will still call both the cell and your 'victory' complete shit.
The advantages you gain from the cell are way too far off in theoretical land (for gaming) to possibly make the development for it worth it. And yes, there are far more qualified minds than yours or mine out there to debate it... but the simple facts are that the cell is unwanted, unrealized unnecessary fud.
The thing to understand about this generation of console gaming is the skewed view Sony is able to give to their hardware. Something no one can deny is that Sony holds the cards when it comes to 1st party devs. This gives them the ability to create exclusives that tout things that appear to not be possible on any other console. Sadly, this is complete shit. If those same devs were only given, say the 360 for instance, and told, make this game... they could have made the exact same game. But since most these exclusives are... well, just that, EXCLUSIVE, no one will ever know. So the tangible 'proof' is unavailable.
This gives sony and devs the room to tout all kinds of shit that simply isn't true.
On a side note... my PERSONAL opinion is that Blu-ray is also bit too premature and forced for 'devs and gamings' sake. I understand that alot of this is driven by pure business practices and motives, but from a technical standpoint I think that blu-ray would have found a much better home in the 'next-gen' consoles (like, for 2012+). Right now it's simply too slow for it's gains in storage to remain worth it. Yes, blu-ray is 'essentially' as fast as the 360's DVD drive. Unfortunately, that's not good enough. It needs to be faster. More than twice as fast, actually. If you're going to get lazy and throw all compression to the wayside because you now have the space on disk for stuff uncompressed, you've now done nothing more than moved the bottleneck. Now, you've got 20 gig of data to transfer to harddisk/memory where you could have only had 9. Keeping the drive the same speed while more than doubling the amount of data to move equals... what, holy shit... LONGER LOAD TIMES! What a crazy fucking concept.
The other crazy thing about blu-ray is that while you're using all this space to store things uncompressed, you could've used your 'OMG BLOW MY MIND' awesome processor to uncompress this data for you on the fly. Again, you've moved the bottleneck for the worse. And with compression methods become more and more sophisticated, compression can come at an unidentifiable loss of quality.
If sony hadn't (prematurely) introduced blu-ray this gen, dev's WOULD NOT be complaining about space, or would simply put games on more than one disk. The whole multiple disks thing never used to be an issue, and blu-ray essentially 'fabricated' it for everyone this gen. I sincerely believe that gaming, gamers, and devs would have all been better off had blu-ray not showed up for another 3 years.
Sorry... back to my main point. The hardware differences between the 360 and the PS3 do NOT give one some mammoth advantage over the other... if really any at all. The 360's video card and memory structure are superior to that of the PS3, and the it's CPU (while always in the shadow of the fabled Cell) is quite good as well. The advantages that the cell gives the ps3 simply ARE NOT WORTH it when comparing the time and effort it takes to get them. Carmack recently said that the large majority of dev time is still consumed in the programming space. This must be essentially true for all devs, so asking dev's to devote more time to 'reinvent the wheel' is simply not worth it. Now, if the reinvention yielded something like... anti gravity hover pads then it'd be worth it... but it doesn't. The devs spend all the time reinventing what they already had in the first place... a goddamn WHEEL!
No, the sad thing about the PS3 is it lacks balance. It has tons of storage space without the speed to deliver it. It has a powerful processor hidden behind complicated layers of process that other powerful processors can provide more easily. It has inflexible ram. It has no balance.
But where the hardware lacks balance, Sony makes up for it by spinning things through powerful PR campaigns and their mammoth influence/control over game studios.
Granted, no one is without their mistakes. Both Sony and Microsoft have made their share of them. And I'm still not refuting that the goliath that is Sony could pull out a big win this generation... but they'll do so because of their collective strengths, not because of those carried by their console. Those are, sadly, too few.
Make your touts and your gloats, but don't try to sell this fud that it's the machine pulling it off, because it simply isn't.
Titanium_Orchid @ Aug 25th 2008 12:37PM
This will is a must buy for me.
Will the cover systems mentioned in single player transfer over to multi player?
MasterCKO @ Aug 25th 2008 12:46PM
I'll be honest, I'm not a huge proponent of FPS. Partly because I suck at them, partly because it's hard to find features that really differentiate any given FPS from the rest of the pack. This looks entirely too fun to pass up, though.
Way to be, Sony. I don't want to feed the hype fire too much, but it seems like this is actually shaping up to be the real deal exclusive FPS franchise for the system. Possibly even a system seller. We'll see. 8^D

The problem is, fanboys run in and put a bad or good sticker on a game long before it releases.
'Oh that game has wonderful graphics, it will dominate X console and X game'
or
'Oh the last game made by X company was superb, so the sequel will be superb'
or
'The last game made by X company was crap, obviously the sequel will be crap'
Bungie was more or less unheard of by many until BAM, Halo hit the marke, if we were to base halo on Oni, we would fail. People thought Haze would be amazing because it was from the creators of TS and Golden Eye.
Guerilla has had an advantage over say Haze and Lair, the reason being is that it operates as a Sony company, if you look, very few Sony games are flawed, not perfect, but not flawed either eg, Drakes Fortunes, Heavenly Sword etc etc
To add to that, if you look at the developer video of Guerilla, they say that Insomniac dev studio is just round the corner from them, and they have great relationships with other Sony game studios, this means that Guerilla is learning from the mistakes of others and the mistakes of its previous game. They are asking Insomniac for advice, watching the way Naughty Dog operates, watching the way sucker punch develops and developing accordingly, changing things as they go along to make the game run better.
This is why rating this game because of the first is flawed in itself, back then, Guerilla was unheard of by many until it made the first Killzone and Battlefront (or something along that lines), it was an independant developer and worked for nobody, meaning that they could not seek the advice and help they are now getting directly from Sony. And with so much help compared to last time, it means Guerilla can stop focusing so much on making the game error free because that is settled and start working on pleasing the gamers, something they did not have the option to do in the past.
Saying all this does not confirm that the game will be any good to a certain standpoint, cos it may or may not be, but it does make you realise that like Bungie, you cannot compare the Guerilla back then to the Guerilla now.
