Have you lived under a rock your whole life?

Electronics get cheaper as time goes by, plain and simple. If DVD players were still $400, then you could talk. As it stands, the 360 is way overdue for a price cut. It was the PS3 that got a premature price cut due to poor initial sales.

The Wii was overpriced to begin with and is overdue for a price cut as well, but I doubt we'll see that anytime soon (unless the $199 Arcade 360 starts to mess with Nintendo's casual market).

*it's limited quantities, not limited time. besides, why would 60gb 360s be old inventory? it just hit the market like 2 weeks ago. yes?

One question, are the 360s made in the second half of this year more dependable?

I'm thinking on buying another one, but I want to know if it's a bit more reliable, something about a vesper chip or something, right?

Its confusing, but the ones with the 65nm GPU have been in the 360's since 360s which were manufactured in September 2007. The falcon motherboard with the 65nm GPU and 65nm CPU is expected to be start shipping sometime in September-- but that doesn't mean it will easy to find one. I remember it took me a long time to be able to easily find HDMI Premiums/Pros after they started rolling out.

This is a great price, and just makes the Wii look that much more over-priced. More accessories to buy, fewer games that are less awesome. This is from someone who has a wii, 3 sets of controllers, and over a dozen games. Still gotta go to the 360 to get my Rock Band on.

On the flip side, I know grandmothers who are buying Wiis for themselves. It's like the damned thing is made of gold.

@princeofshapeir - No, you got it wrong.

Falcon Mobo = 65mn CPU/90nm GPU. Been out since late Oct. 07

Jasper Mobo = 65nm CPU/65nm GPU. This is the next expected revision some time this fall

Valhalla = 65nm CPU+65nm GPU on one super chip

Yeah, I realized that after I looked at my post.

Don't expect Valhalla to come out anytime soon btw, I personally think they are saving that chip for the Xbox 3/720/whatever they call it, for backwards compatibility with 360 games. It would be extremely forward thinking to get the costs downs as much as possible for the CPU/GPU chip considering what a backwards compatibility disaster that has occurred with both Sony and MS (although at least *some* games are playable on 360s, Sony eliminated it outright).

Not to be all negative or nothing, but isn't dropping the price of the 60 gig Xbox 360 kinda crappy to do to the people who bought one since August 1st when these babies hit? (Me.) I mean 50 bucks is still 50 bucks and if the price drop is the 7th, I bought mine on the 15th of August. I can not return it. Kinda fast for a price drop don't you think?

The arcade unit should have been 199.99 for a while. Glad to see Microsoft trying to kick a price war in the ass. I'm not complaining there. Just hate losing 50 bucks.

Dont take this the wrong way, but its kinda your own fault. The rumorrang was talking about this price drop occuring pretty much the same day that the 60 gigger showed up in stores. I even think MS hinted that this would happen.

On the plus side, that $50 bought you an extra month of play time, so think of it that way.

P.S. wtf Joystiq, trading one broken comment system for another? At least get the "Remember me" function to work, I have a long email address.

Most retailers have a 30 day price match. Plus this was expected. MS just had to clear out the old stock (20GB units) at "sale" prices before they could drop the 60GB down to the $299 price point.

Sony did much the same earlier this year.

Hey Xbox360 owners, question about refurbished 360s: How does the RRoD warranty work with those? I see some places selling premium models for under $200, which is tempting.

So in the end did they fix the RROD?

Because the main change in this new models its the new liteon dvdrom (which it make it unflasheable) with the same falcon rrod board... and of course more GB of storage.

If not i guess i have to wait for valhalla or jesper new models.

The Falcon mobo is much less prone to RRoD, but it can still happen. It has better heat sinks on the GPU and a cooler 65nm CPU, but still uses the hotter 90nm GPU. I personally wouldn't hesitate to purchase a Falcon, but since Jasper is on the horizon, I might hold out.

Jasper, with it's 65nm CPU and GPU should completely eliminate the RRoD.

Of course, I have a launch unit which RRoD'd once. I installed the Talismoon fans (40% more airflow) and haven't had a problem since. If you cool the 360 properly, you won't experience the RRoD.
