Ah Ys! Good memories there...

Ys on the Turbo Duo or Lunar on the Sega CD?! Oh the hard decisions of a 16yr old!

Nice. I'm finally buying a new game on the VC. I've always wanted to play the Ys games.
...well...assuming I can fit it, at least.
Samurai Showdown II is also quite awesome.

My question about Ys is: does the combat work? I've never played it, and I know a lot of people like it, but the whole Hydlide-style "run into enemies to hurt them" sounds not only boring, but difficult to manage (is there any strategy to winning a fight, or do you just run away when you start to die?).

Can you ease my concerns, Joystiq, or should I skip it?

There is some strategy, such as having to maneuver to the side or back of certain creatures who are invulnerable from the front. The thing I like about the combat is it instantly tells you if you've gone into an area you shouldn't be in yet at Adol's current level(you run into a slime and die instantly), as well as immediately satisfying as he runs over a baddie that used to be a nuisance.

Yay! SS2! Time to exchange my circulating green papers for more multi-digit numbers that can be then exchanged for something, of equal or lesser value than the total amount of points obtained, on the popular console, that is in fact not concrete, but virtual instead; from there I will be fully able to have a extended period of contentment, whilst utilizing my newly obtained interactive media.

And How!

Considering how long they are a RPG on virtual console is quite the deal. They should have done that for Chrono Trigger since they aren't really adding anything to it...but then they couldn't charge $40.

Y's brings back very good memories. The soundtrack remains one of the best ever in my opinion.

Boring video of the game though. Grinding for xp is something I just won't do anymore. Thankfully there are passwords you can use to start the game with full xp, which I'd recommend. Then you can enjoy everything in the game without having to mindlessly kill monsters for hours...and hours...unless that is your thing.

I personally thought Book II was visually superior and much more exciting, though Book I had a smaller scope that was easier to get my head around.

Book III, incidentally, changed to a sidescrolling platformer in part, I believe, to combat some of the complaints about the battle system. Running into people isn't my preference, but I do prefer it to SLOW turn-based encounters.

Great game, though, if you are looking for something a little more modern, Tales of Symphonia captures a lot of the spirit of Y's for me, and has multiplayer battling as a nice plus (and won't cost you much more if your local GameStop has a copy).

“What a nice person! You kindly give the palm to such a crock!”

“All creature will die and all the things will be broken. That’s the law of samurai.”

“Give you my knock for justice!”

I completely agree with you, Russ. Y's I & II on the Turbo-CD had and still has one of the best soundtracks of all time, in my opinion. I've been waiting for this one since day one of Turbo-CD releases on the VC, and I'll be picking it up instantly as soon as I get home and get logged onto my Wii. :-) Its not only the music, though. I also love the voice overs (unique in the day when this was released) and the story I've always found was great, spread over the two games. Can't wait to get home now, d/l this, and play it on my 51". Good times! Gooooooood times!

save your money and dl the FREE and remastered versions...VGA graphics, fresh anime cut scenes and the music(yes the original was great in the time but come on)is totally redone and vastly superior to the original game release...and this is coming from someone who purchased a supergraphx with super cdrom2 way back in the day when i collected such systems just to play such games...I do not understand why they are not cleaning up the old games for the nintendo vc like they are with the other systems and pc releases. Exact same story line and game play with VGA quality graphics and cut scenes...how can u loose?
