I'm wondering if the Wii was a test shot and Nintendo had a backup plan in the wings. We'll see if that's the case. Honestly, I think WiiMotion plus will open a new avenue for the Wii considering accuracy has always been a problem. It should solidify the system for another 2-3 years.

well remember they kinda did that with the DS too. they kept saying 'this is not the new Gameboy. the Gameboy brand will release again soon. etc.' but i think that was just to save them in case the DS failed so they could go back to the Gameboy worse come to worse.

it would not surprise me at all if they released first in the next gen. with all the bags of money they have now, im sure they could afford to update the graphics and keep the familiar motion functionality. although, when has Nintendo ever used the same controller for more than one generation?

I remember this always made me wonder. Will Nintendo abandon the tsunami of money that is the casual market and go back to a normal gamepad, or continue to gorge itself in monies with a motion-control console?

Because if they went back to a normal gamepad, what will the old people do? Look around for a generation-old console? (Although I shouldn't discount that possibility, just look at the PS2...)

So what's the deal with NEXT-gen consoles being talked about already? Halo4 on Next xbox? Nintendo firing first 'shot' of the next gen battle?

Sorry, maybe I'm FINALLY getting too old for all this, but I can't be going and getting another console next year, or hell, even the year after! Come on.. maybe its just a slow news day?

I don't think anyone could have guessed they would go with "Xbox 360" this generation. I can't imagine where they'd go in the next if they keep the Xbox branding. Isn't much you can do with it, and they'd be a bit foolish to drop it now that it's become synonymous with their video game business and gaming in general.

Though, it's not like we're playing "Game Boys" anymore.

I think it was about this time last gen that we started talking about the then "Next Gen" systems, so I'm not suprised, I'm suprised were not hearing more about them actually.

The next Wii will be 2 Wii's duct taped together with a DS glued on the side.

LoL I remember that chick from the previous article about the Wii "assisting" in giving redneck kisses to her. XD

Anyway, I've got to disagree on this one, mostly because it'll probably be autumn/winter 2009 at the earliest before the Wii is seen on store shelves in abundance... and even then, talk of the next-gen Nintendo console will be limited. The system is just too consistantly profitable right now to bother throwing a new one to the masses so soon.

A little suggestion here:

Add(Duct-tape!?) some more of these comments and a caption saying something like "You're not original or funny, gtfo." and this picture could become a comeback against all of those "jokers".

I don't hate Peach. Flat characters are incapable of eliciting emotions from me.

Ugh, that article is hard to read with the pic there.

Anyway, the last thing I want to here at this point is new console launches. It's barely been 2yrs.

But either way, there is a good chance I won't be running out to buy the next one on launch day like I did with the wii. Nintendo has done nothing but disappoint this generation, and I even doubt I'll be picking up the next one at all (well I'm sure I'd pick it up eventually...).

I think the reasoning behind the prediction is that to correct all the flaws in the Wii would either be too difficult for the current hardware to support or would require several expensive peripherals.

Things people "expect" Nintendo to fix include storage space, DVD playback, and higher resolution output. The case can be made that an external HD and a bios upgrade might be able to resolve the first two, but the third will probably need a beefier chicklet inside just to get games running at a 720p resolution, not to mention all the eyecandy that developers can't push into it.

Look at the comparisons of the port of "Dead Rising" to see just how far behind the console is behind the other two, technically speaking. If they can't keep up when the other consoles really start hitting their stride, they're going to lose their reputation in an avalanche of shovelware and terrible ports.

I don't think it's fair to use Dead Rising an as example of how far behind the Wii is after seeing this:
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/usermovies/257353.html

Dead Rising on the Wii is just a pathetic effort on Capcom's part.

@Samfish

Wow that video made the game look pathetic. I only saw a handful of zombies on screen at once. I know it is a lackluser effort on Capcoms part but they are a great company (the best) that always puts out the best games. I am curious if this was just a flawed concept from the beginning or just a cash in with no effort. They need to play to the strength of the Wii (controls) not the weakness (horsepower). Pathetic.

Quite possibly the most depressing video ever. Not because of the hundreds of innocents being gunned down, either. Do better, Capcom!

DVD playback, welcome to the 21st century >_>

I bet they wont bother with DVD playback, but they will stick with DVDs as they main format I think. They have found an awesome market of people that dont usually play games to regularly buy their stuff aswell as cater to Nintendo fans.

So I wouldn't be suprised if Nintendo are first out of the blocks on the next gen. Microsoft are in with problems, Sony are one of the companies funding Blu-Rays, so Microsoft would have to pay some money to Sony to use a Blu-Ray drive would it not? M$ are bastards and I can see them sticking with DVDs again but making digital downloads their main source of games cutting anyone without an internet connection out of their loop. Sony will be able to stick with Blu-Rays with downloads as a secondary source.

One thing is for certain though, after the success of the Wii, expect both Sony and MicroSoft to have motion controllers, Sony will improve on SixAxis.

I know Sony is on the Blu-Ray board of directors. I am pretty sure they have patents with the anti-piracy and disc coating of Blu-Ray that Microsoft would need to liscense.

Whether they would have to pay Sony a bunch of money directly is not very clear. However, if they go with the format they will be helping Sony indirectly with every sale of a game or Blu-Ray movie. Sony would gain more marketshare. The videogame market has been the main Blu-Ray catalyst.

I don't think consumers will be ready to adopt a new format anytime soon (Holographic media). Besides, at this point holographic media is still very expensive on a per disc basis. It does offer huge data storage over any other type of disc based storage medium.

If anything I think microsoft will go to digital downloads. Possibly including a 1 TB HDD or even an on-line storage solution like iDisk. Maybe all of your purchases will be on a secure online HDD.
