Soul Caliber for sure.
Soul Caliber has weapons, Virtua Fighter doesn't.

Ah, but you forget... Virtua Fighter is a balanced, meticulous fighting game. Soul Calibur IV is an unbalanced mess. A FUN unbalanced mess, but an unbalanced mess regardless; it's hard to take the SC franchise seriously after this last game.

See, that's a downer for me. Hand-to-hand mixed martial arts does it for me way, way more than weapons.

VF5 is the better fighter for more balanced online competition (no yodas in sight).

SC4 is the better "party" fighter. even your kid sister can play it and have fun.

I totally agree with AoE.....soul cal is a fast paced, button mashing, mess. It can be fun, but when i can give my 2 yr. old daughter the controller and she's able to get the main guys life down more than half way..........well......I'll just leave you with that thought! And it wasn't on easy.

eh, i think you are wrong on then answer to question 3. Microsoft said you don't need to use the new dashboard.

I'd get a link to the story but i'm in a hurry. I'll get one later.

Here's a post from Major Nelson:

http://209.11.233.26/archive/2008/07/14/some-of-the-features-in-the-new-xbox-experience-8-person-chat-vga-plus-more.aspx

The third bullet point says, "Dashboard built into the new Xbox Guide. For everyone who loves the blades interface, it’s not going away; they are now built directly in to the new Xbox guide. Every feature and option is available right from the guide. You can even access your full games library at all times. No matter where you are (in dash or in game), immediately call up your games played list and directly launch a game."

So the current guide will be replaced with the blades we have now, with all their functionality. The dashboard will become the "New Xbox Experience" for everyone. Blades will be there, but you'll have to hit that glowing button to get to it.

I'll just add to that by saying, NO, you will NOT be able to use the old dashboard. At ALL, unless you refuse to connect to LIVE again.

Now, however, hitting the Guide Button on your controller brings up a blades-like interface in the center of your screen, which has pretty much all the same options as the old Dashboard (not guide), without the fancy colors or ads. Meaning, instead of going to Guide>>Personal Settings>>Active Downloads, you go Guide>>Left to Marketplace Blade>>Active Downloads.

And for example, you can redeem marketplace codes while in-game. And you can switch games easily using the Quick Launch.

See this Youtube video to see it in use:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBn-uLcjoEc
At 1:45 they go to the new guide.

Also, the reason that friends, messages, and party aren't there are because it isn't connected to Live. Don't worry, they WILL be there - the few seconds of it at the E3 presser had them on. The current guide doesn't show friends, messages, or recent players if you aren't connected, either.

Yeah, the blades are now the guide, but I asked MS directly, and the new dashboard will be a mandatory update for everyone.

Virtua Fighter 5 is balanced, unlike Soul Calibur.. yeah I spose the weapons are a plus.. but the SC series is moving very slowly, after a month of being out, I can't believe it hasnt been patched for balancing.. both need more convincing AI, SC's is dire.. play a stage a few times & it does the same things.. I find too much wrong with SC.. Whereas, VF I would just want the wrestlers removed, they just don't fit in with martial artists - there's other games for those...

um... no previous Soul game was ever really balanced, why would they balance this one? Granted SCIV is so unbalanced it makes one's head spin... but let's face it, the series has been running headlong down this particular hill from the start...

it's called Virtua Fighter. not Virtua Martial Arts.

Wrestling is indeed a form of FIGHTING. -_-

Sorry but I'd say more entertainment than actual fighting.

Wrestlers on TV fake it for entertainment. those moves can still harm in real life dude.

grappling and using submissive moves to wear your opponent down is a centuries old form of FIGHTING.

and yes, entertainment as well. but then again so were gladiator fights, and we all know how brutal those were. :D

I'm not a big fighter fan, but friends insist the best 3D fighters out there are the Tekken games.

Your friends are button mashers then. VF > Tekken by miles, and always has been.

Tekken is more of a timing game, try button-mashing against me and you'll get countered every time!

In regards to fighting games, I'm kinda looking forward to MK vs DC. Look at the trailers, the gameplay looks bad ass!

Thanks for answering my question guys. I was pretty sure I was going to skip Dead Space so I'm glad at least one of you agreed with me.

ofcourse Dustin said fallout 3! =)

i fully agree that dead space is the one to skip.

-Banjo is an inexpensive platformer with a lot to ofer gameplay wise.

-Fallout will probably have a longer lifetime than all the other games.

-Gears is gears.

- Left4 Dead will be amazing. it WILL be. theres no denying it. that is ofcourse if you have 3 other buddies that know what they are doing...

Virtua Fighter 5, no question. 1000 gamerscore on that bad boy.. Im on my third copy of VF5 (dont ask) and after 2 weeks with Soul Calibur 4 i am confident ill never have to rent it again..

VF5 is extremely intimidating but equally rewarding. the fighting engine is much more robust than SC4 and combat is as technically sound as it is challenging to understand..

SC4 has ridiculously a deep character creation system that VF5 cant compete with but all the glitter is not gold. All those options have very little effect on combat that isnt any more complicated than making Jell-O..

if you want to play with friends, by all means get SC4 and mash away.. if you want a 'real' fighting game that will (less than generously) reward your commitment you should definitely buy Virtua Fighter 5

@rockeranimefreak

vf5>sc4>doa4 (my fighting game hierarchy)

vf5 is not an 'arcade' game, its not for kids.. if you dont like fighting games vf5 is probably not for you.. doa4 is closer to sc4 than anything else, instead of spamming attacks ppl just spam counters..

@ryan

ok, i bought vf5 and some how managed to crack the disc. then i immediately bought another copy, flipped out one night and traded it back in figuring id just replace it with soul calibur 4.. rented sc4 (smart move) and was pretty disappointed in the combat and now i have to pick up my 3rd copy from the same gamestop.. again.

and finally Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts doesnt even rate on my list of games.. ill probably rent fallout3 to see if its any good for me but i didnt like oblivion so im not holding my breath on that one either..

gears2 and left for dead are the only official must haves for me.. dead space looks promising but will probably be another forgettable 3rd person shooter in the end..

Virtua Fighter is the best 3D fighting game available. DOA 4 follows close behind, which is why it's represented in MLG, but it stll has minor balance issues and a few moves track too well. Tekken 5 suffers from unbalanced characters, mainly because Namco put too many characters in the game to balance it properly. There are moves that suck you in, including some strikes. I understand some throws sucking in but a strike should never suck in. There's also the combination of moves that track too well and moves with huge hit boxes. I've sidestepped behind Baek before and he kicked straight up in the air, facing away from me, and launched me while I was still behind his back. Soul Calibur 4 has its share of these problems, but it's more bearable. Sidestepping is inadequate and ringouts are too easy, though. The only bad thing about Virtua Fighter 5 is that it's not a pick-up-and-play game. It takes some practice. It's worth it, but you would really benefit from buying an arcade stick for this as the stick is superior to the pad in every way. Avoid the DOA 4 stick, though, especially if you will be wearing it out a lot. It has rubber contacts that wear down easily from excessive play time.
