Readers pick best webcomic: A life of service
Maybe it's the upcoming expo, or that we made the focus of this week's wrapup on the comic series, or maybe (just maybe) it was the favored gaming comic. Whatever the reasons, Penny Arcade's "A Life of Service" took top honors in the webcomic wrapup. Second place was taken by 2P Start's Level Up!, while Hijinks Ensue's Scared Straight claimed a distant third. A special mention goes to Robot Martini's two great tastes, which came in last place, even though we actually quite enjoyed it. Thanks to everyone who voted, and be sure to let us know of any game-related webcomics you stumble upon this week!

Hahaha
This is funny cuz I was watching my brother play the Force Unleashed demo for the first time today and I said something like "damn do you really have to pick him up then throw your lightsaber at him then lightning him then throw him away? That's going too far."
Cruel

Thanks :* we appreciate it. Check out Dan's next strip Thursday (cause we won't be around to submit it for consideration this week).
See everyone at PAX (I'll be wearing a largish cardboard Shark Head)

see, that penny arcade comic wasn't funny. Yes yes, humour is subjective blah blah blah, but bottom line is, PA shouldn't have won - yet again!

All the choices this week were duds, though. So the combined forces of Penny Arcade and Star Wars won rather easily.

I'll wave my $145,000 piece of paper that says I know lots about art (which if you read my weekly web comic you could argue I probably don't) and say, above all else, Penny Arcade is the top of the pile for consistent visual quality.
Plain and simple, if they aren't funny, and often enough they aren't, the level of professional craft is both good and consistent each strip.
Compare it to Hijinks. hijinks has poor composition choices, poorly organized text, inarticulate gestures, and is simplistic in its coloring. The comic can still be funny, and it can still be enjoyable, but side by side it doesn't have the same level of visual refinement.

I'm a Penny Arcade fan, but 2P totally deserved to win it. Penny Arcade's third panel was pretty lame and the comic probably would've improved without it.

I hate to repeat myself like this. I feel like a shill, but my other comment was all the way at the end of the previous webcomics post and I think people missed it.
crossplatformcomic.com has a new strip up. Great for those of you who prefer textlessness. I hope it finds its way to roundup.

Wow that actually made me lol. Very good comic.

PA definitely deserved to win. 2P START was a one-note joke.
I got laughs out of the last two panels. It helps if you picture the crying mother saying "Those.... Goddamned... Wookies"

Hey, awesome to see Hijinks Ensue place third. They've got the funniest podcast I've ever listened to.
CHAOS!! @ Aug 26th 2008 9:51AM
wat? A cheap copy of an austin powers joke wins?
i guess that says a lot about gaming webcomics.
t_m @ Aug 26th 2008 10:46AM
Penny Arcae might not be LOL funny that often, but its still usually a step above the rest. Most of the others are flat out awful... though a couple had nice ideas.
KiraXD @ Aug 26th 2008 1:58PM
too many PA haters.. im not a PA fanboy personally... but i thought it was pretty funny.
It helps that they actually know how to draw... unlike 90% of the other webcomics out there. (its a comic... the art should be good even if the jokes arent)
