This chart is useless. It doesn't clear up the cross-region differences*, it doesn't even MENTION the MGS4 versions and, worst of all, it doesn't even get the software packages right. Note that every 40GB PS3 sold in the US that included Spiderman 3 said "Special Edition" on the box. They ran out of those AGES ago and they have included NOTHING. The only place I know of that even still has them is the Sony Style store. That's akin to claiming that all 60GB and 20GB units included "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" - they didn't. I had to force Best Buy to give me a copy of the full, retail, "Unrated" version because their ad claimed that it still included it when I purchased mine on Jan 5th, 2007. The only reason they showed back up in stores after that was because of the scores of potential eBay scalpers returning them thanks to the lenient/extended holiday return policies. It's the same deal with the XBOX 360 mini media remote in 2005... later shipments didn't have it even though the ads continued claiming it.

If this chart is supposed to clear things up, it better be more thorough.

*60GB PAL is more akin to the first 80GB US

It seems as time goes buy, Sony keeps gimping the PS3 more and more.

All 360's, including the Core, are capable of BC. They just need a HDD.

How about adding a line under "Bundled Accessories" for type of controller: DualShock3 or SixAxis? This seems a lot more important that if an ethernet cable is included or not.

Why does everyone complain about Sony not having BC? Big Deal. Did everyone complain when the SNES couldn't play NES games? No. How about when Dreamcast couldn't play genesis games? No. It is a luxury that the previous console could and that the PS3 could at the beginning. But then every one complained about how expensive it is. So they made it cheaper, now everyone complains about how it doesn't do what it did. Think about it, chances are if you own PS2 games, you own a PS2. Now i'm all for integration and cutting down on the amount of devices you have, but not to the point where I want to pay twice for something. I already paid for a PS2, why should I pay for it again in a PS3. I agree, the option should be there. Sony should still offer a PS3 with BC at a premium for those people who would like to pay again for something they already paid for. That is their prerogative. But stop complaining about how evil Sony is for taking it away and not finding other ways to make the console cheaper. I don't know for sure, but chances are there isn't much else Sony can do to make the PS3 cheaper. Can't remove blu-ray, can't use a different proc, hard drives is one area they already are doing, what else is there? Not bundling a controller? That wouldn't make any sense. Eventually it will get cheaper as all things do in time, but to me, it's just crazy that so many people complain about something that wasn't a necessity not that long ago. Just my 2 cents...

I got a 80GB last year after I got a 50" DLP, plays all the PS2 games I have tried just fine. My buddy's launch 60GB bluray laser died on him, so I bought it from him for $100, and the laser reader rig is about $65, so I got a 60GB PS3 for about $165 :D

It sucks that they are removing PS2 BC, but it is a trade off. The cheaper the console, the more people buy it, the more titles released for it. If you have PS2 games, you proably have a PS2 already, and you will get buy.

I think Sony is really making a big mistake without BC. It is MUCH more important than BC on 360.

Original Xbox (1) has almost no games that I would care about and (2) didn't sell well enough to be much of an issue anyway.

But how many people have a PS2 and are looking to trade up? One very clear advantage that a PS3 COULD have would be BC... people love being able to get rid of the clutter of their old system, and get improved video out of the new box to boot. It's a huge advantage to parents buying a new system... you can see their eyes light up when salespeople tell them they can still play all the old games on the new box.

Unfortunately, Sony has gimped PS3. This means there is no difference between going 360 or PS3 (BC wise)... you will have to keep your PS2 either way or give up your entire library of old games.

For me, that was a clear tip of the scales. BC would defininitely help to sway me back, although I don't think it would actually be enough (I already have a Blu-ray player and generally like MS's system better).

But many people don't pay attention to the same things I do and would be walking out with a PS3.

O.k. some of you are confused.
As of firmware 1.6 the hard drive (internal) limit was set to 500 gig. Prior to that there were people modifying esata cables and connecting terabit externals to the internal sata port. Post 1.6 firmware allows 500 gig hard drives in the internal bay. THERE ARE NOW 500 GIG 2.5 INTERNAL SATA DRIVES AVAILABLE. Check your local computer shop (web). I have a 320 gig (biggest available drive in january). I am not aware if the 1.8+ firmware restored larger than 500 gig drive compatibility for the main "internal" hard drive. Though around christmas time we may see a 750 or terabit 2.5 sata internal on the market... As when I got my 320 gig in january it had only been publically released in the past 2 months or so. The NOW AVAILABLE 500 gig sata internal 2.5 has been public for approximately a month.

The 160 gig ps3 that is not yet available was to my understanding going to have a card reader, wifi, 4 usb and no bc (ps2).

It is worth pointing out that the 20 and 60 gig ps3 systems were equipped with both the emotion engine chip and the graghics chip from the ps2. The 80 gig system was equipped with the graghics chip from the ps2 and a emotion engine emulation software to acheive approximately 93% ps2 bc, where-as the 20 and 60 have approximately 98% ps2 bc.

I was not aware that they were making ps3's with the smaller cell processors but I'm glad they are (less power draw and cooler), And recent advancements in the blu-ray technology also permit smaller blu-ray drives-thoough I have no idea when they will be coming in the ps3. Is it possible to make a smaller ps3-probably, is it wise-probably not, the system runs fairly warm as it is, adding more space in the case will help add airflow to cool components, and spacing helps prevent heat transfers to more suseptable components.
The 160 gig is not yet avilable.
The non bc 80 gig are moving in to stores.
The best system in my opinion was the 60 gig. But honestly good luck getting one from a store, new or used.

How come they are so sure the 160GB will have a 65nm CELL and not a 45nm CELL, as in februari Intel told us they would start switching to 45nm soon and the PS3 would be the first to benefit from it.. maybe the new 80GB version is already 45nm (although I doubt it as they claimed the 45nm would consume 40% less as the 65nm version)...

I don't believe any of the older 80GB models (ones that had Motorstorm or MGS4 packed in) had the 65nm CELL. The power consumption listed in the instruction manual for the 80GB MGS4 bundle is the same as the 60GB one (380W).

The 80GB unit (CECHE01) does come with an ethernet cable. The 40GB and new 80GB(CECHK01) are the ones that don't.

I am not sure how the 160GB model was confirmed to not have an ethernet cable packed in since it is not out yet.

Kevin, how do you know some have 65nm Cells? Joystiq is the only place I've seen that say that some do.

Every other website I've read said that all MGS4/Motorstorm bundles all have a 90nm Cell.
