Warhammer Online goes gold, loots it
EA Mythic has announced that its MMO treatment of the classic Games Workshop tabletop game, Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, has begun its march towards store shelves.
Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning (best known in the MMO community as WAR) is finished and off to the magical disc-forging factory, preceding a public beta set to begin September 7, for which more than 800,000 players have registered. A very large, metal switch connected to what are surely fortress-like game servers will be flipped to the "fully on" position September 18, which is when the rest of the world will go to WAR.

Finally :)
WoW is canceled and I'm ready to surrender my life to a new fantasy world that does nothing but harm me in the real world. I can't wait!!

It IS WoW... It just has Public Quests and a darker setting. Other than that, it is 100% WoW.
RanWitScissorz @ Aug 27th 2008 7:33AM
No, it is not WoW, it is a new improved/upgraded Dark Age of Camelot. WoW is a heavily PVE built up game, whereas WAR is a PVP built game.

How much will it cost to play online?
Bigfoot @ Aug 26th 2008 8:13PM
$15/month
Mr.ESC @ Aug 26th 2008 11:05PM
Well it's cheaper than Wow.
bouille @ Aug 27th 2008 8:32AM
at Mr.Esc it's same price actually.

Got in the preview weekend and I was impressed with what I saw. Apart from some screwy pet AI issues (my squig wouldn't listen to me until after my target was dead and he would spend quite a bit of time trying to kill the corpse), I was surprised at how solid the game was. Looking forward to destroying those wimps on the side of Order with my awesome squig.

It was really fun being in the beta test over the past couple of months. Can't wait for it go hit the shelves. :D

Getting tired of the 'fantasy' MMORPGs, which is why I spent over 2 years with MxO (The Matrix Online) and will be joining SWG (Star Wars Galaxies) soon.
Irony is, I have a level 70 on WoW and am looking forward to WotLK. More Sci-Fi/Cyber-Punk action MMOs please.
I have heard that WAR has left a lot of features behind and a lot of things are slightly buggy in an attempt to get it out before the WotLK hype starts to build, then again I heard this on the internet so it has chances to be bull.

Play EVE.
So fantastic.
Digital Fox @ Aug 26th 2008 9:12PM
Don't play SWG. I played it way back at the beginning, and when they changed up the system the whole game went downhill.
Seriously, if you want Sci-Fi, play EVE.

Huzzah! Though 'gold' is pretty much 'okay we're burning the disk even though we know what we have here doesn't really work and you can expect a massive patch on launch day. Not that this is worse than any other MMOs. Is there a word for that? 14k gold? gold plated?
Royale @ Aug 26th 2008 10:52PM
Really, there's no way to "test" the loaded servers without a huge open beta and I'm sure they will make some tweaks after that is finished. But really, who cares... welcome to MMO world.
Grimjakk @ Aug 27th 2008 2:19AM
Ever played DAOC? WAR is DAOC2 with sweet, creamy Games Workshop icing.
It's all about the strategy and tactics of RvR, and if all someone did during beta or preview was grind PvE or take part in the zergy standoffs at the Tier1 Empire Battlefield Objectives, they really haven't touched the Game yet. They've just explored some of the mechanics.
Nothing wrong with that, but they should recognize the limits of their perspectives.

played the beta
will definitely be passing on this one.
Mr.ESC @ Aug 26th 2008 11:06PM
Mind if I ask you why?
It looks exactly like Wow except the models look a bit better.
Huey2k2 @ Aug 27th 2008 1:32AM
Yea I wouldn't mind a real subjective article on it so I can get an idea of what it's really about.
I am really itchy for a new MMO to come into my life to replace WoW that me and my girlfriend can enjoy. So if anyone on here has played the beta for an extensive period of time I would love some input.
Joshua @ Aug 27th 2008 3:27AM
it wasnt BAD, i suppose.
but mainly the entire game just felt unresponsive.
like, skills and even the autoattack felt like they weren't working unless I constantly pushed the button/clicked the skill/clicked the mob
but it wasn't client side lag, it felt like the game just wasn't registering any form of control
admittedly it was a beta and i expect the full game to be somewhat playable in 6 months or so

I've been in Closed Beta and it's the best MMO out there imo. I've played WoW, SWG and Conan. All pale in comparison to the thought Mythic has put in.
There is alot of innovative new features like Public Quests (these things make WoW dungeons look stone age), the Tome of Knowledge and the Living Guild system (as a guild master myself I am delighted to have this new addition, it gives alot more purpose and focus for the guild).
The combat system is extremely tactical and requires alot of coordination.
Don't listen to the moaners who say the combat system is unresponsive, it is mainly due to server lag (closed beta servers weren't using the expensive servers planned for release).
Also note: The game is less buggy than Conan is now.

FYI Open Beta isn't actually 'open,' it's only available for pre-orders.
