Joystiq hands-on: Guitar Hero World Tour

It took a little while to get used to the drums. The two-tier structure with the cymbals feels great, but can be slightly confusing at first. The drums are a lot bouncier than the Rock Band ones, making them not only quieter, but more fun to play. With Rock Band, the bounce seems to come more from the way the sticks are held, rather than out of the structural nature of the pads. Not hearing the constant thok, thok is definitely preferable too, as anyone who has bought silencing pads for their Rock Band drums will know. [Editor's note: Rock Band 2 also features quieter, bouncier drums.]
Gallery: Guitar Hero: World Tour
Having five drums, rather than four, also takes some getting used to. It wasn't until midway through the first song that a blue (middle of the lower tier) note appeared, but it spun me for a loop. The one issue I faced continuously was my sticks getting stuck underneath the cymbals at times, but this is no doubt fixable by adjusting the heights of the pads. World Tour's drum set is definitely preferable to Rock Band's overall, though this is only in comparison to the original set, not the forthcoming model -- and certainly not the premium ION set.
As for the guitar, if you have Guitar Hero III, then you already know how the instrument plays. It's the same design and feels almost identical. The new guitar has a few extra features, like the touch panel strip. Hammer-on fans will love this. On certain note sequences you can slide your finger along the strip, making it feel more like sliding up and down a guitar string. A pretty decent idea, but in practice it suffers from the same problems that the Rock Band's guitar does with its solo buttons. Moving your hand into position at such short notice is guaranteed to put you off.
Another new addition is the star power button, which is long and thin and is activated with your palm, in case you're feeling to lazy to tilt your controller. A pretty pointless addition, unless you're using it to palm-mute notes in the song creator. The World Tour guitar's whammy bar has also been improved, making it far more resistant. I may be in the minority here, but I still prefer the Rock Band guitar. Between the buttons being flush with the fretboard, the feel of the strum bar and the overall design, it's still my number one choice.

I didn't get to play around with the create-a-track mode but, from what I saw at the press conference and heard from Brian Bright, this was probably for the best. The idea is sound, but the implementation looks horrifically complicated and technical. As someone who's experience with creating music is very limited (read: none), the thought of using the create-a-track mode is almost tortuous.
Again, it sounds like an interesting idea, letting you change the pitch by tilting the guitar or customizing your chord list; even using your guitar to lay down a keyboard track or a drum beat, using the built in drum machine. From what we could tell, however, you're only going to be able to create something good if you have real world knowledge of writing and performing music. In which case, why not just do it in real life?
In the end, the create-a-track mode seems perfect for indie bands who are looking to get their music into the game. As for the casual family audience, or even the non-musical hardcore audience, this is one bullet point on the back of the box that is going to be played with once or twice, then completely ignored.

Just hopefully the main singer in the band doesn't have a gigantic jaw like in GH3.
Raikage (GOLDEN Gun Of The Patriots) @ Aug 27th 2008 8:04PM
I swear he's made me fail more songs than I can count just staring at the freak.
Thief @ Aug 27th 2008 8:06PM
His ugly face reminded me of the lead singer of Aerosmith or Mick Jagger.
Ugly.
Taco_Hell @ Aug 27th 2008 8:12PM
Or look like a muppet or a cave man. Seriously, through out the entire game, all I could think of when I saw the singer was either that Animal gave up the drums and decided to be a singer, or that the cave men from the Geico commercials have become so popular, they decided to become rock stars.
info_dude @ Aug 27th 2008 10:15PM
hes like a cave muppet or somethin
DCBlack @ Aug 28th 2008 1:11AM
He reminds me of the Gorillaz videos.
ThornedVenom (Harley Quinn Defense Force) @ Aug 28th 2008 1:52AM
Actually that was Morgan Webb.
DemonGSides @ Aug 28th 2008 9:25AM
@DCBlack
Except that the Gorillaz are amazing, and sometimes, that guy's singing was just god awful.
Wiinterfang @ Aug 28th 2008 10:40AM
I wouldn't disagree with him, I'm pretty tired myself of guitar hero already.
Kuuma @ Aug 30th 2008 12:42AM
They gave the perfect Steven Tyler jaw to the Guitar Hero III singer, but in GH:Aerosmith, Steven Tyler, had fish lips.
phoenixavatar2 @ Aug 27th 2008 8:11PM
As someone who's buying into the whole band game thing, I'm still looking for a straight up, in-depth comparison between the two sets of instruments, especially the drum sets and including the cymbal pack for the RB2 set. I'm getting tidbits here and there but mostly in reference to the existing sets. Right now I'm planning to get the RB2 special edition and the GH WT game/guitar pack and I want to make sure I'm not making a big mistake by not going vice versa.
Chilly P @ Aug 27th 2008 8:41PM
Yeah, me too, but I wouldn't take advice from anyone who thought the Rock Band guitar was even *acceptable*. Seriously, how does anyone play with that thing?
Haggard @ Aug 28th 2008 7:55AM
Took me about 2 hours to get used to and now I'm more comfortable with the thing than the PS2 SG controller that I spent a year and a half with.
Jigga @ Aug 28th 2008 1:48PM
I would take the RB guitar over the GH guitar any day of the week. In my opinion, the flush buttons found on the RB guitar are far superior to GH's raised and separated buttons. If only the strum bar was better...
MarkHawk @ Aug 28th 2008 9:45PM
The faulty overdrive sensor for the guitar bugs me but I am to busy to mail it in for repairs. I do like the bigger guitar though.
Hashbrown Hunter @ Aug 27th 2008 8:14PM
Is it just me or did Jem not really explain his actual impressions of the game? No offense to you Jem, but all you were doing was comparing it to Rock Band and talking about how you were kind of nervous about trying the music editor.
Sorry Jem, but you sounded really bored/tired in this preview.
Cheapo @ Aug 27th 2008 8:25PM
I'm with you. Sounds like a pretty one-eyed view on the game.
Of COURSE it's going to follow Rock Band's layout, do you want the guitars coming on an angle, drums along the bottom and vocals in a circle in the centre? Seriously.
Does every Halo player do ANYTHING with Forge? No, but who cares?! It's a neat niche market idea.
Far from open minded here, pretty sloppy article overall.
Hey Apples @ Aug 27th 2008 8:33PM
I'm not sure what you'd expect in the way of a review when its an obvious clone/copy of something else.
Any review of a clone is going to be measured against the original (better) version.
Cheapo @ Aug 27th 2008 8:36PM
No doubt you expect to compare a game to its nearest competitor.
He just acts surprised about it.
"Hang on a minute" ... "Isn't this Rock Band?" - wow, terrific insight!
jsn @ Aug 27th 2008 9:03PM
Hey Apples calls it correct. The comparisons are unavoidable and well within bounds when talking about it. Just as gh3 was a bad clone of gh2, everyone knows ghwt is just a clone of rb1. I'm sure it'll be a fun clone, but a clone it remains. There's no reason to sugar coat it.
VaultICEE @ Aug 27th 2008 9:34PM
@jsn, my thoughts exactly.
I don't think Guitar Hero World Tour will be a bad game.
But I also don't think its going to be the uber Rock Band killer. I just can't go over the fact that the drum chart looks horrible, but as long as the guitar is fun and not overcharted like GH3 I'll pick up the core game.
Hafk @ Aug 27th 2008 10:04PM
I all I heard in this preview.
Gui-ROCK BAND LOOK AT ROCK BAND FOLKS!
Way to fucking preview a game. Bash the create a song mode, despite that it is obviously a niche-mode for those interested, much like Forge in Halo.
Besides, the good thing is, you don't HAVE to learn the tool! You can just download the songs made by others. No reason to bash that. Free unlimited DLC is Free unlimited DLC in my book. Sure, there will be plenty of bad songs out there, but thats why there is a content rating system.
Not to mention, Brian Bright states that the Joystiq interview was not even an interview.

Third post.
To all of those interested in GH:WT. Don't come here. Go somewhere else, as Joystiq clearly is not a good source.
DanB91 @ Aug 27th 2008 11:45PM
Apples, Joystiq can mention Rock band, but last time i checked this was a GH4 "preview", not "lets be HMX fanboys and say how much GH4 is ripping off RB2".
At first sight, GH4 doesn't even look like RB, which its different colors, style and such.
Back to the point, I was hoping that Joystiq would actually tell us how the game works. Do you share star power? Can each instrument fail out and one person has to save them, or is it more like GH3 co-op, where you all share a rock meter? But I guess since the internet is basically 90% HMX fanboys, we'll never find out until release.
BTW, Apples, are you the mod on the Rock Band forums?
steesefactor @ Aug 27th 2008 8:15PM
Its actually pretty common practice to use the select button to activate star power as tilting the guitar can mess up your combo and isn't very precise.
The star power button seems like a not to the hard core who go for the top scores.
Snowblind @ Aug 27th 2008 8:21PM
I'm very happy to hear they've added something like this. I've only got into the games recently, but it's very annoying to have to tilt the guitar upwards, it completely throws you off, I usually end up missing a bunch of notes because of it, making it pointless to even try.
tcc3 @ Aug 27th 2008 9:50PM
Yeah those damn turles always messed up my mario games. They should have just taken them out. Or let me press a button to kill them safely.
The tilt is (or should be) part of the game. Its the risk of screw-up vs the reward of extra points. It takes skill and practice.
Maybe they should just take star power out all together, hmm guys?
Hafk @ Aug 27th 2008 10:18PM
tcc3
I have been palming the Select button since Guitar Hero 1. About damn time that they advertised that it's a star power button!
I can't stand dealing with faulty tilt sensors. The X-plorer tilt sensor is so bad that I made a rig out of tape, a quarter, and an eraser off of a pencil to hit that tiny back button on the controller. All because the tilt sensor just doesn't work half of the time.
catfish24 @ Aug 27th 2008 10:56PM
tcc3: you have a point, but you have to remember, sometimes the guitars you get have a non-sensitive tilt activator in them so it's nice to have that in case you get one of those guitars. I know my rock band guitar is like that so I end up having to use the select button instead of tilting it.
fco. @ Aug 27th 2008 8:18PM
Talk about a biased preview, dissing even a feature he didn't try, and making sure to point out that the only thing he like (the drum pads), Rock Band would probably also have it.
JoeTheBlow @ Aug 28th 2008 5:06AM
It was amazingly negative.
I'm a huge Harmonix/GH1/GH2/RB groupie myself, but i can see the advantages this game has and can't fault it too much.
Competition inspires innovation folks, its good that they advance, even if you don't use the new features.
T @ Aug 28th 2008 8:17AM
It sounds like he didn't try it because he went to and was completely overwhelmed.
It's like RPG Maker. Great concept...but to actually produce quality out of takes a lot more work than people expect when they approach it.
GHDF in full force today. Holy crap.
NBA Kirkland @ Aug 27th 2008 8:24PM
I look forward to ambitious rockers creating my favorite songs in the create-a-track mode and releasing them for all to download. Who wants to make me 2112?
I've heard conflicting reports about adding vocals to the songs you create. Can it be done or not? Just locally?
jsn @ Aug 27th 2008 8:49PM
you can sing along with and reportedly record your voice with the track, but what you upload/download has no vocal track included in it. You have to add it yourself.
ill trooper @ Aug 27th 2008 8:25PM
Sounds like Activision's been playing a lot of Rock Band.
SantaDuJuan @ Aug 27th 2008 8:34PM
I'm sorry but for anyone that plays on Hard or Expert I don't see how you can prefer the Rock Band guitar.
It's just not easy to play, it may be more realistic but I'm not going for total realism in a video game, specially when it doesn't even resemble actual guitar else than shape.
bounchfx @ Aug 27th 2008 11:56PM
I play top tier expert (or whatever you'd like to call it), and it's extremely difficult for me to go back and use the GH3/2 guitar. I'd be perfectly fine (and even happier) if I never had to touch the damn thing again.
The strat just feels so much more comfortable to me in it's size and button layout.. and the solo buttons are a godsend, not to mention make you feel awesome.
Any day.. strat>gh3 guitar.. one of the reasons I'm not really looking forward to GH4. anyone know if the guitars are cross compatible?
Hafk @ Aug 28th 2008 1:08AM
All Xbox 360, PS3, and PS2 rhythm controllers will be compatable.
OmegaVader @ Aug 27th 2008 8:33PM
Did they fix the crappy gameplay and go back to the tradition set by GH2? or are the songs still overcharted and the note-timings out of whack? If the game still ain't fun then what good is it to add features...
Hafk @ Aug 27th 2008 9:34PM
Play Aerosmith. They fixed the charts and note timing.
The hammer-on timing is just slightly looser than GH2. Leaps and bounds better than GH3.
VaultICEE @ Aug 27th 2008 9:35PM
I didn't feel as if Aerosmith was that much of an advancement to fix the whole problem to be honest...
Hafk @ Aug 27th 2008 10:21PM
True, it could use more tightening, but aleast fixes the strumming Hammeron/pulloff problems of GH3. That's really enough for me.
Honestly, jumping into GH2 hammerons would alienate the people who started playing expert in GH3. GHA provides a good transition to the tighter hit windows in GH2 and RB. I wouldn't be suprised to see a tight window in GHWT.
rcf1105 @ Aug 27th 2008 8:42PM
You can only create good, unique music if you know how to create good, unique music? Stop the presses.
Foetoid @ Aug 27th 2008 8:46PM
I stand by the fact that some time ago, it was announced that all GH3 DLC would be playable in GH:WT:
http://kotaku.com/5018312/yes-guitar-hero-iii-downloads-will-work-in-guitar-hero-world-tour
My question still stands (and noone seems to be able to answer it). Since DLC from GH3 on Ps3/360 is playable in Guitar-only form in GH:WT, does that mean since the Wii missed out on GH3 DLC (and DOES have DLC for World Tour) that the GH3 DLC Wii owners missed out on will be made available in guitar-only form for World Tour?
TheOverlord#2 (is playing MM1 and Okami) @ Aug 27th 2008 10:02PM
I would say don't worry about it until the game comes out because you can't really find that out with demo sets.
Dudek @ Aug 28th 2008 8:57AM
No, DLC from GH3 won't work with GH:WT. That page from the link you posted had comments from users showing other sources that confirmed this. The sources were:

RedSlime @ Aug 27th 2008 8:55PM
These guys are crazy. I agree with the reviewer, the Rock Band guitar is way better with the fret notes. I feel like I am developing carpal tunnel syndrome with a GH guitar. Plus the strum (which I admit took getting us to, especially when I had to return two guitars) is way better than the click-fested GH guitar.
Would like to try out the new drum set, but honestly, after seeing the ion Drum Rocker, does the GH-WT drum kit really matter?
Hafk @ Aug 27th 2008 9:29PM
The $220 left in my pocket after buying the World Tour drumset say "Yes"
aneurysmi @ Aug 27th 2008 10:15PM
It's pretty obvious then reviewer is 'merely' a 'casual' player (who likes the rock band guitar, wtf?) and by extension, an awful person in general...
(What makes the improved SP bar pretty pointless? You didn't actually use it or the touch strip, did you?)
RedSlime @ Aug 28th 2008 6:18PM
Get a job buddy. $220 is nothing
bobartig @ Aug 27th 2008 9:02PM
Everyone is parading the fact that all peripherals will work will all games for the next generation of 'band' games. But, how is this supposed to work if RB uses 4+1 drums, GHWT uses 5+1, and RR uses 6+1? Do they just mean that the guitars are cross compatible, and drummers are shit out of luck? You can't exactly play 5+1 drums with a 4+1 kit, now can you?
