"Of course, this begs the question: Is this a sign of things to come?"

This isn't begging the question. See

Argh. More Puritan social fearmongers ruining the internet for everyone else. If I want to play slot machines while sitting on the can in my own home, why does the government think I'm to be treated like a thief or murderer?

Multiplayer games that impact real worlds already exist, eg. online gambling, second life etc.

Question is: What is gambling according to U.S. laws? Would 1 vs 100 be considered gambling if you can win money in it (which is what Microsoft and Endemol plan to do for the 360's fall update)?

Has it already crossed the line? The IRS has already tried to tax transactions in virtual worlds saying they are transactions that have real value.

see here: http://www.fool.com/investing/high-growth/2006/10/16/irs-to-tax-your-second-life.aspx

If I go into Fable Pub Games and win a bunch of gold, and then use that gold in the game to purchase a coveted item, will the IRS claim I profited from the XBLA experience and require me to file at 1099-G?

With the promise of multiplayer in Fable 2, the chinese wall that kept the XBLA experience in the realm of "fake" disappears...

I wouldn't call Pub Games, "evolution" or "deep".
You practically paying 10$ for a whole small chunk of the game, it's one step above a demo.

It's not like this hasn't done before anyways, Spore Creature Creator anyone?

And by the way, Tetra Master sucks, whether you have to pay 1$ extra a month or not.
