Bungie staffer gets Xbox Live account hacked

Let this be a good reminder to always err on the side of caution when giving out your Xbox Live information ... that is to say, don't do it. MTV Multiplayer found out that Halo 3 multiplayer producer Joe Tung can list himself among the gamers who have had their XBL accounts compromised. "Representatives from Microsoft aided Joe in swiftly resolving the issue," said Luke Smith, who didn't provide other details.

One rather sneaky method of account stealing has been "social engineering," whereby the hacker in question calls up Microsoft service support and pretends to be the owner of the account and gains the sympathy of the customer service rep. Of course, the biggest tactic so far has involved promising one billion MS points with a simple click of the mouse. Protip: Don't give out your password, no matter how enticing a proposition is.

Yes, unfortunately :( A couple of years ago on Final Fantasy 11 i typed my password into the speech field by accident. No username though so it wasn't all bad. Damn keyboards! *shakes fist*

It's too bad MS doesn't have the same customer support for their customers in stolen account cases. From all the stories I've heard, if you say your account is stolen, they delete it!

MS really needs to up their CS standards, because that's what the whole problem is. They sell their CS to foreign companies who do what's frankly a horrible job.

Best advice to Live customers right now is never tell anyone on the net/Live ANYTHING about yourself, no names, no locations, no email... NOTHING AT ALL.

Oh, dang. I clicked this article thinking it would be about a frustrated Bungie staff member who got so frustrated with some stupid kid that he somehow got a hacker to hack that kid's account in the vain hopes of getting back at him.

This is far less awesome.
