The UK's official Xbox 360 magazine posed an inevitable question to Street Fighter IV producer Yoshinori Ono: How's it going to play online? For his part, Ono was quite frank, saying, "Obviously lag will be a huge problem for online play. We're working on it. It's quite difficult for 3D Street Fighter at the moment."
Asked how the developer is going about, er, combating the problem, Ono got technical. "In order to prevent the lag we're thinking about trying to balance it up at [the] user interface level and input timing," he said. "We still haven't got a complete plan as yet. We're still working on it. That's all we can say at the moment." Okay ... we'll let you get back to that, then.

I used to play Third Strike online, but I get the feeling it makes me worse at the game. Like, I could barely parry anything online (even projectiles, which normally shouldn't be a problem), so I started timing it early and I got it; then I played some offline matches and found I couldn't parry anything because I had gotten to used too the online timing. Online play is great to play people you normally wouldn't, but in all honesty, the lag (and there always will be) makes it hard to take online play seriously, not to mention the average quality of players tends to be lower. Anyone can go online and play, but not many people would be willing to pay 50 cents a match for some competition or drive over to a LAN center, host's house, etc to play some small money-matches and casuals. Compare this to StarCraft/WarCraft ladder matches; most of the better players really don't even play public matches since the quality of players you'll find in a random matchup isn't really that high compared to playing private games with players you already know are good.

SF4 should have a punching bag room while waiting to start up matches like Brawl did. I thought that was pretty cool
