Stefan, I'm glad you can play online, but that still doesn't negate the fact that online is BROKEN for most people, including myself. This game has been hyped as the end-all of online co-op brawlers for two years and is delivered BROKEN. This must be taken into consideration when reviewing, even if you don't have any issues.

Actually, IGN did mentioned all of your complaints. Way to actually read the reviews before bitching about them, though.

And if you wonder why a review wouldn't mention that the game is repetitive... well, you either don't know what a brawler is or don't get it. Either way, that's half the fun.

Here's my review: It's a really fun game, and if they get the online problems figured out then it's definitely worth the $15. And if you have other people to play with you locally, it's also totally worth the $15. If you don't have anybody to play with locally and don't plan to play it online with friends, it's still a fun game, but maybe not worth the $15.

I played the CC demo and really wanted to like it. It was cute, but I and wasn't overwhelmed with a need to buy it like I was with Braid. I am in the middle of re-playing Fable in preparation of Fable to and am having a much better time with Fable than I did with the CC demo. Oh well.

So what exactly are the online problems? I was planning on picking this up for specifically for some online co-op with friends. Some other people I know have it for the same reason and they haven't mentioned a thing about any online problems yet.

Is it just with finding random players that the problems occur, rather than when accepting invites from friends (which is the only way people should be playing anyway)?

Also, what lack of features in online co-op is VGT talking about? And who the hell is VGT anyway?

Also, could I possibly ask any more questions?

It's kind of like Worms on XBLA. You might have to search for a match multiple times before finally getting into a group, and sometimes even then it will drop everyone when it starts the game. The matches from friend invites seemed to work pretty well though.

It can be annoying but it shouldn't be a deal breaker.

There are definitely online problems. Played through with 4 people online last night, (2 in one place, 1 in another, 1 in another) had to "restart" the game about 5 times to get to the end, including having it dump us out just as we were in the middle of the end boss fight.

In one game I started, it even actually wouldn't allow me to join my own game, saying that it could not be connected to. More than once, it would let one of the two people join from the same console, but not the other.

There will definitely need to be a patch for this game. Fun, but the online troubles are significant.

Wow I wonder how those saying they were saving their money to play this "masterpiece" feel now instead of purchasing Braid?

Oh that's right most gamers want something familiar and safe. We don't deserve innovation, we are a demographic full of consumers that appreciate cheap laughs over subtle witty and clever humor, low budget horror movies over movies that attempt to use cultural subtext in a clever way, and contrived unoriginal music over past masters that gave birth to the music you love now.

Why can't they just buy both? $30 for both games is still half the price of a retail game and twice (or more) the enjoyment over many of said retail games (except for maybe this fall, holy shit there are some good looking games coming this fall).

What's not funny about Castle Crashers? It's got deer propelled by faeces and giant lizards you can ride on. It looks fucking HILARIOUS and I'm going to buy it right now.

I liked Braid as much as the next person, but trying to act all highbrow and pretentious just makes you look like a dick. I say "dick" because I prefer cheap laughs over subtle witty and clever humour. And because you're a dick.

Geez the message wasn't to you open minded gamers, despite being called a dick for having a differing opinion.

It was for all those cheap douches who didn't want to part with the little cash they had to purchase Braid, because they were waiting for the "masterpiece" that was Castle Crashers, even though the reviews at the time stated Braid was magnificent.

I am getting both too, but I have no doubts that Braid is the more inventive groundbreaking game that deserves the most monetary support.

My original message was just for the ignorant masses who blew off Braid for being a "Mario clone".

So quit voting me down dammit!

I wasnt aware that braid required a defense force... I thought that the reviews did a pretty good job of defending it.

Everywhere I go, people talk about Braid. It's not like it's some underrated, unheard of cult hit. It can support itself.
Also, Castle Crashers a 'cheap laugh'?

@samfish,

I am not sure if you knew this, but you can connect your 360 to a laptop or pc that uses a wifi connection if you don't wish to buy a wifi adapter right away.

http://www.lockergnome.com/infotechguru/2008/01/27/how-to-use-your-laptop-as-a-wireless-adapter-for-the-xbox-360/

That's the page that worked for me. There's an alternate way on YouTube as well.

regarding the price...depending on how old you are, you probably spent at least 5 times this amount playing The Simpsons and TMNT in the arcade.

Hi gang,

I'm the editor of VGT and the author of the Castle Crashers review. I just wanted to take a moment to thank Joystiq for the linkage and offer up a slice of commentary about our coverage.

I read one comment about VGT "hashing together" our coverage based on other articles. At VGT, we provide our gamertags for anyone to view the amount of a 360 title that we have actually finished. The review is based on my time with the game, online and offline, after it was released yesterday morning.

I’d imagine IGN’s perspective of online play based on their experience over Partnernet was accurate. They likely didn’t test it on Xbox Live before the review was published.

I’ll continue embracing my "ignorance". I’m not going to reward The Behemoth for shipping a broken game that makes Xbox 360’s freeze. I’m not going to reward The Behemoth with a padded review score because they are promising to fix the game. It doesn’t matter if the fix happens today or three months from now. It was sold as a complete product and is completely open for review.

I also didn’t tell anyone "skip it altogether". I’m telling interested gamers to skip it for now. Wait until Behemoth fixes the problems and pull the trigger on 1200 MS points at that point. I’m sorry if that offends people. I simply believe that a product should work correctly and do everything it’s advertised as doing before purchase.

Replace the "The Behemoth" from that paragraph with the word "Rockstar" and it's something that could've been pulled straight out of a GTA4 review, word for word. Yet, you guys gave that game a 9/10.

Weird.

I don't understand the last one..

They praise the game for it's gameplay, graphics, etc.. and then bitch about how the story is 5 hours, has no re-playability (even though that's the whole point of the game), and they complain that the servers are cluttered (even though, anyone in their right mind would know this)..

So even though they praised it more than they hated on it.. they gave it a 60? Yeah.. that really doesn't make sense.

Casle Crashers is ultimately the best arcade game on existence, and the online works fine if u are playing with someone on your friends list, which is what I bought it to do, also, over 50,000 people bought CC if you check the leaderboards, I don't believe the behemoth expected that, I also think that the netcode was the last thing they worked on, and MS rushed them for the summer of arcade release :( HOWEVER, This is no reason to pass this game up, if you have friends and like fun, then I reccomend it, I'd you're a percfectionist, then you have days of gameplay ahead of you :D

Great game; i care not for the cost as much as the quality. The game has quality & IT IS FUN for me. if the game is not your cup of tea then that's fine but why click on the link for this article & ask the FANS of the game why this & why that. I understand the frustration over the "needed" patch for better online play but c'mon ppl; would you review Halo 3 & COD4 lower since it lags especially when a new DLC is introduced? The game is solid; true 4 player brawler. grab a beer & play. The stool jokes get better with each beer consumed. as far as the "pro" reviews from non-established game site/magazine/podcast/whatever... They seemed to always give a negative review to attract gamers to their site; just like in Halo 3. As for me & my crew we'll be playing Castle Crashers for some time. it's a instant classic from the makers of Alien Hominid. P.S. if you don't like dookie jokes then DON'T GO to www.joecartoon.com because CACA is not always it's all CRACKED up to be. peaCE & have fun playing CC.

If anyone reads this:

This game is worth playing more than once, with friends it's exponentially more fun; i really can't recommend it enough.
Whilst online is flawed currently, a patch to resolve the issue will almost certainly be forthcoming.
