Into Africa: Far Cry 2 dev talks about, shows immersion

It seems that even Ubisoft wants to know what an average day is like for our very own Ludwig Kietzmann. Is life in Africa really as crazy as he makes it out to be? Clint Hocking and his team have dedicated themselves to finding that out. They are going to great lengths to put players into Ludwig's shoes via a variety of immersion-enhancing elements in Far Cry 2, which Clint himself talks about in a brand-new video after the break.
As an added bonus, we've included a new, all-gameplay video of Sony's Afrika (Hakuna Matata outside of Japan) after the break as well, since Ludwig assures us that this game is also highly representative of his daily routine.

Will the ending of that you catch aids and die?
I mean africa without aids is pretty unrealistic imho.

More like an Africa with anything nice in it is pretty unrealistic :P

You have malaria for most of the game if that helps.

man, I'm a little excited for Afrika (though that trailer didn't terribly impress me). Will we really never see it in the States?

guns just fall apart in your hands after a few hours of use? 0_o
Yubastard @ Aug 30th 2008 1:23AM
it's like asking: "in grand theft auto, do days cycle in just 24 minutes? 0_o"
I'm sure a gun being fired constantly may last a week, but devs ain't going to make u play a whole week for reals because it's overkill... maybe a few days in game time.

Africa is really hot and moist.Think of all the rust and weapon corrosion*.It's not like it's going to stop working out of all.It will simply jam a lot more often ie. be less effective than it's "healthy" counterpart.
*Then again it's been proven that you can bury an AK-47 underground for over twenty years and it will still work.

Naked Peach should remove "hot and moist" from her vocabulary.

I dunno about his solution for immersion. We only get wowed at how good art looks in a game for the first 10 minutes, afterwards everything becomes routine (unless there's a sudden increase/decrease in the quality which is a BAD thing for a streamlined immersive experience).
I think that addictive core gameplay (you know, the thing we repeat over and over again in games?) is the key to get you hooked onto a game because when you're having fun, unreal things don't bother you. But hell, you've already given your willing suspension of disbelief the moment you bought the game, so I don't think that immersion is even as big as an issue as he tries to portray it.
