Nintendough: Fiscal 2009 forecast raised again
Good news, everybody*! Nintendo expects to make even more money during its 2009 fiscal year than it had previously anticipated. And it had previously anticipated quite a bit.
According to VentureBeat's Dean Takahashi and Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter, Nintendo has raised its financial forecast for the six months ending Sept. 30, 2008, as well as its expectations for the full fiscal year ending March 31, 2009. Thanks to phenomenal Wii and DS sales and improved foreign currency exchange rates, Nintendo now expects to shift 30.5 million DS units in the full fiscal year, along with 197 million DS games, 26.5 million Wiis and 186 million Wii games.
Projected fiscal 2009 revenue? Two thousand billion Yen. That doesn't even sound like a real number!
*Particularly those obsessed with the financial wellbeing of emotionally detached megacorporations.

gah please stop!
Nate @ Aug 29th 2008 3:52PM
so like...2 trillion yen?
DonWii @ Aug 29th 2008 3:56PM
3.8 Billion, or about everything Sony has lost on the PS3 so far, in one year.
Red Leader @ Aug 29th 2008 3:53PM
Why don't more third party developers make more games for Nintendo if Nintendo is doing so well recently? Yeah yeah, I've heard the argument that motion control is hard to implement, but seriously.
Metal_Gear @ Aug 29th 2008 4:00PM
Because Nintendo have done everything with the Wiimote, shake it around to do the action, then they released WiiFit which does everything with the board, nothing left. And Nintendo have developed new hardwear for their systems and not told anyone at all so no one knows what they are making and cant make games for anything.
Mr Khan @ Aug 29th 2008 4:00PM
They do. The ecstatic 3rd party situation on PS360 (with a veritable flood of gold for Fall/Winter) causes people to ignore the less significant, but still strong, 3rd-party base on Wii
Ports are becoming better (looking at Sonic Unleashed and CoD:W@W), and stronger original titles are coming, especially from Japan
J @ Aug 29th 2008 6:13PM
Coincidentally, 2009 is the year where we're looking forward to such supposed 3rd party gems like Mad World, The Conduit, and Sadness (it's still coming out, for those of you who don't know).
Also, hope for a Captain Rainbow and Fatal Frame IV translation, which at most would probably be at the end of this year/beginning of 09.

Honestly, this fiscal year feels weaker than the last one. They have their champions: Brawl, Wii Fit, and Mario Kart, but what else is coming? Animal Crossing will do well, but not rank among the financial titans, and Wii Music isn't going to do as well as others, by virtue of the music genre being crowded with more popular (and better) games
DS has jack-shit coming from the first party front for the rest of the year (ok, except for Kirby Superstar Ultra)
How are predictions rising, exactly?
Jakka(Naked Peach Brigade) @ Aug 29th 2008 4:10PM
You doubt the power of Wii Music?
Dopple Boppler @ Aug 29th 2008 4:21PM
Animal Crossing is going to do extremely well. As in, closer to the likes of Wii Play and Wii Music than Brawl or Galaxy. Just look at Wild World for indication of that.
Otherwise I don't know. Not only is Wii Music not gonna sell as well as Wii Play or Wii Fit, but speaking as a "core" gamer, there's pretty much nothing for the Wii that I personally want for the rest of the year outside of Mega Man 9, and even for the DS, Kirby and Chrono Trigger are all I really want. Obviously I'm the minority here, but I'm not sure how there's still so much interest in Nintendo stuff right now.
Noshino @ Aug 29th 2008 4:38PM
Wii Music, it will sell like hotcakes...
Hell, when it is even releasing? there are already ads for it running in Japan...hell, Soul Eater: Monotone Princes is supposed to be coming out sooner and yet I haven't seen a single one on TV...

Too bad they don't have any good games coming out. My Wii is still boxed up in my dorm and I've been here for a week....

With all the money they've made you'd think they could afford to launch a gaming system for the "hardcore" audience since they currently just have one for casual gamers, minus a few (mario zelda etc).
Noshino @ Aug 29th 2008 4:47PM
the problem is (and this is what pisses me off the most, even more than the fact that they aren't the high end company that they used to be) that Nintendo does make and fund hardcore titles, it just seems that they don't fucking believe in them, and just release them for fuck's sake.
They don't back up their hardcore titles as much as Sony and/or Microsoft, almost zero advertising
There is also the fact that Nintendo doesn't support the 3rd party hardcore titles, seriously, don't they have enough to at least help out Capcom with Zack & Wiki and Ubisoft with No More Heroes?
They have them, just not as many as for the other 2, but NIntendo just doesn't make them...as noticeable.
bry @ Aug 29th 2008 11:13PM
Kamui, I think this isn't about being able to "afford" such a system. But rather, what fits into their vision. In an ideal world, every company should do everything. In reality, you focus on a few concepts to work with. Looking back, it seems to me that Nintendo first works on their base concept (i.e. what they want to achieve) THEN work to create an environment which aids them to achieve that goal. In other words, the hardware's power itself is not the goal for them. It's merely the means to achieve the base concept, not the ends. Whether we like it or agree with it is another debate, but their approach makes sense to me.
I certainly have my wishes and desires, but putting that aside, this financial success is a testimony to their sound decision making in striking the balance, in this era.
Kamui @ Aug 29th 2008 5:05PM
I just think it would be awesome if they had a console with next gen graphics and brought companies like square back. It could be like the snes days all over again. Sorry I'm not a nintendo fanboy, I just think that would be awesome... ok i'm just to cheap to buy a ps3..
Nikonov @ Aug 29th 2008 5:10PM
... What do they plan to make money /on/? Everyone and their dog has a Wii, two DS's and four remotes. On top of that there isn't a damned thing coming out in the near future that I give a crap about. (Megaman 9 aside.)
Psaakyrn @ Aug 29th 2008 7:07PM
Unfortunately, you severly underestimate the size of the "Everyone except hardcore gamers" market.
Psaakyrn @ Aug 29th 2008 7:05PM
Now if they only help the lesser markets, like Singapore.
I mean, it's almost cheaper to get an XBox 60 GB than a Wii currently, and will probably be so this coming holiday...
Tyler Jones @ Aug 29th 2008 9:48PM
Thats about 10-11 billion US dollars.

Hey, you make it sound like getting emotional over the comparative profits of multinational corporations is somehow irrational or uncool!!!
As a fanboy its my duty to take every piece of news personally and read into it the downfall/supremacy of my chosen console.
Has joystiq suddenly reversed it's Flamebait Policy?
