PAX 2008: Halo 3 Mythic? What's Halo 3 Mythic? [update]

Update: According to Joystiq, Bungie's Brian Jarrard explained that the Mythic picture was taken prior to the PAX kickoff and wasn't meant for public consumption. Jarrad then made it clear that the Mythic screen is "really not that exciting" and has "gotten kind of blown out of proportion." We attempted to get someone at Bungie to talk about it, but mum is the word.

As we jet off to our next PAX appointment we thought we'd inform you about the latest and most interesting Halo 3 news bit to come from the PAX show floor that's fourteen times more exciting than Assembly. It's something called Halo 3 Mythic with a multiplayer only menu, version 1.2 marking and, if the above screen grab from the guys over at AddictGaming.com can be trusted, is something to do with Bungie's canceled E3 announcement. Or it could be just a general Halo 3 update. Or it could be something to do with the acceptance videos. Or it could be everything combined. We dunno!

Like we said, the image above was snapped from Bungie's booth at PAX, so (seeing that we're here at PAX) we'll sneak over to the Bungie booth like ninjas and inquire about this mysterious Halo 3 Mythic. Story developing.

im pretty sure it's just a demo screen for the new Mythic Map Pack. they jus made that menu for promotion. its just a home screen for the map pack.

Yeah seems like a map pack demo since its "multiplayer only" or something totally unrelated...which is unlikely.

Yeah I think so too....it's just a placeholder name for the map pack

maybe its a new campaign mode. The previous map pack was called legendary. So the new map pack might be named after a new campaign mode that will be a dlc.

Yeah, I heard somewhere else the next map pack would be called Mythic.

I'm guessing that its just the multiplayer only version of Halo 3 that Bungie brings with them to events to let people play.

That's my guess as well. If Purple Reign is at PAX and available to play (or at least demo), but not released, it stands to reason Bungie has a build of Halo that they can use to play unreleased maps.

Maybe it's a remake of Halo 2 with the Halo 3 engine? Probably not, but that would be cool in my opinion. I agree that its probably about the new map pack.

I'm going to agree with everyone else here. Mythic is most likely another map pack. It goes so well with the other map packs. Heroic Map Pack, Legendary Map Pack, Mythic Map Pack. Makes sense in my opinion.

I can tell by some of the pixels and from seeing quite a few shops in my time.

its defenitly not shopped. i saw this screen in a video walkthrough of Assembly. its just a promo screen, and its not fake.

Ya, the picture didn't look completely convincing for some reason. I don't know anything about Photoshop, but somthing doesn't fit in that picture.

trust me, TVs and monitors have a crappy quality when taken with a cell phone.

i fully expect an explanation later today as this gets circulated.

It is just a developmental disc that Bungie uses at events like this. This one has one of the new Mythic maps, Assembly, and has AU2 on it. That's all, it is not anything super secret like we would hope. Sorry

The most logical reason. 1.2 because AU2 drops Sept. 16, most already figured it would be the Mythic Map Pack. I'm sure there was something similar at Meadowlands and San Diego.

Honestly, if that were the announcement left out of E3 that Bungie was leading up to I think we'd all be pretty disappointed. I agree with what people are saying about the map pack idea.

Particularly if they're just going to have it running on some random screens at their booth.

I always thought the next Halo game would be a mutiplayer only game with reamped graphics, but this is probably the map pack.

Its just a multiplayer only Halo 3. On the Bungie PAX booth schedule they say that they will have 'multiplayer up and running in the booth all day, every day, including a brand new map, "Assembly"'

I'll agree with others and this is not shopped, i seen it while i was walking around PAX.

Guys, this is only the Halo 3 Multiplayer build with the new map "Assembly" in it. They need to put the map on a disk (Halo 3 "Mythic" in this case) because it's not uploaded to the Live network yet.

Long story short, Mythic Build = New Map

I think this is just the code name for the new build of the game. Bungie has said that a title update is coming late September/early October.

yea this is just a fakeout to get us all excited. im really hoping that the map pack and the title update isnt the big news from bungie because a) map packs are cool, but not that great. (seriously, how many times do they plan on remaking lockout) and b) the title update is TAKING AWAY features (ie the sheild doors in some maps). so yea lets hope that bungie has something worth talking about when they release the BIG NEWS

You guys realize Mythic is the next map pack for sure, not just maybe.
Bungie stated that in the newest update if I remember right.

Plus it was one of the skulls in the game. So it fits.

But hopefully they do update the background image for the title screen, that would be pretty sick, the normal one got boring.

But an MP only version would be fun like Halo CE, with full map customization and custom game only style gameplay.

yea the question here isn't which map is next. the rumor is about what mythic means on that screenshot. and no bungie never called it the mythic map pack, it is a name that has been circulating due to rumors

You can also make a picture just like that on your computer then goto media center on your xbox 360 and open the picture it will then look like your playing it on your tv but its just a picture! * I bet a nerd would do that to spike peoples brains an make rumors* i think i spelt rumors wrong but meh a nerd can fix that

Probably nothing to get excited over. But I personally would love if I could buy and download just the multiplayer element of Halo 3 to my xbox. Then I could drop right into a game when a friend wants to play without changing discs.

I think that they might actually be implementing bot play into the game.

All I can say is: who gives a crap. Halo is so overated. The only game Microsoft has is Gears. Other than that the games suck. Just shows you can't do anything with such a sucky system.

hmmmmm......if this is just a map pack look closely instead of saying 1.1 it says 1.2
