PAX 2008: Halo 3 Assembly hands-on

First, let's get a few Assembly informative bits out of the way. Bungie did not and refused to talk about any specifics regarding Assembly including how it'll be released, when it'll be released or even if it's paid content. Knowing that info, let's jump into our hands-on impressions.
Assembly is a medium, medium-large sized space with plenty of room for 4v4 multiplayer matches of Slayer, Oddball, CTF or even King of the Hill matches making it a very versatile map. As far as cosmetics are concerned, Assembly is a true Covenant looking map with plenty of reflective purple walls to navigate through, greenish yellow grav lifts to launch you towards the heavens and gray walkways to ... uhhh, walk on. The coolest part of the map's look is the Covenant Cruiser that hovers overhead and is seemingly assembling some kind of Covenant structure. Hence the map's name.
Taking a look at the map layout itself, the best way we can describe its unqiue characteristics is by comparing it to a few other Halo maps even though it was made very clear that Assembly is NOT a remake or inspiration map. To us though, Assembly is a bit like Midship, Ascension and Gridlock combined. It's a circular multi-level Covenant map (Midship) that uses a central multi-tiered focused layout (Warlock) where players call fall off the outer ledge or jump from outer platform to outer platform (Ascension). Collectively speaking, it's a medium sized circular experience with numerous nooks and crannies on the outside, ramps and lifts on the inner rim, a few towers on the sides and a central structure where the action seems to always be focused towards.
After playing a few rounds, we were intrigued by some of the map's "features" including the central most lower part of the map that houses the Gravity Hammer. It's an interesting location because the Hammer is surrounded by four explosive fusion cores and a few times we saw players toss in a grenade or two on an unsuspecting Hammer-whore which only resulted in a severely weakened Hammer-whore. Speaking of Assembly's central location, on the upper most level players will spot active camouflage floating in some sort of super charged light beam. This too is a perfect place to chuck grenades into to rack up a few double (or triple) kills. We also loved the map's outer towers where jumping along the wall and navigating up towards the platforms is encouraged and those who make it up alive will be treated with rockets. Explosively useful rockets at that.
Now you ask, how does it play? Surprisingly enough, Assembly may be our favorite Halo 3 multiplayer map yet. It's a nice mix of close quarters combat, open long range combat and risk versus reward scenarios that you don't see too much in other maps. At times it's chaotic, other times you'll feel like you're stalking your prey and at other times you'll wonder why you can't walk ten feet without being loaded full of BR bullets. Honestly, Assembly is a very well designed map.
After surviving the reading that was required by the wall of text, we're sure you want some visually entertaining Assembly footage. You're in luck! Here's over a minute and a half of some off-screen Halo 3 Assembly gameplay footage set to musical deliciousness that is Benny Hill. Enjoy.

FUCK YEAH SEAKING.
Looks like a really nicely designed map. Here's to hoping it's another freebie (protip: it won't be).
Fosssil @ Aug 31st 2008 2:18PM
Gridlock? That's not a Halo map...
Did you mean Warlock?
Dustin Burg @ Aug 31st 2008 2:24PM
Apologies I had Gears on the brain. I meant Warlock ... :P
knighty @ Aug 31st 2008 2:25PM
I was thinking that too but thought it might be a Halo 1 map I'd forgotten about. From the video it seems very Warlock-y though. Unless we can start playing as Marcus Fenix in Halo.
Fosssil @ Aug 31st 2008 2:29PM
Cool, thanks for the clarification. That gives me a much better mental picture of the layout now :).
343 Guilty Fart @ Aug 31st 2008 2:22PM
I'm looking forward to this and thanks for the write up. But which map is Gridlock? Is that a H2 Vista map?
Wiinterfang @ Aug 31st 2008 2:35PM
Does the guy the new from Unreal tournament is the same as the GOW dude?
SSneaky @ Aug 31st 2008 2:52PM
What? In english please.
Sora @ Aug 31st 2008 8:18PM
He was asking if the guy from UT3 is the same as the Gears of War main character Marcus Fenix.
Raikage (GOLDEN Gun Of The Patriots) @ Aug 31st 2008 2:39PM
Mmmm... Midship, fond memories of that map and my friends and I playing a game we called fight club, we'd all get in a circle around the pit in the middle and two of us would go at it punching (with the plasma pistol equipped) with over shields on.
Good times.
HighFiveJesus @ Aug 31st 2008 3:07PM
how about king of the hill, plasma grenades only, shotguns only. also known as "redneck". with at least 8 people playing, it was a blast. about the only fond memory of playing any halo i have.
also the only reason to play midship.
Raikage (GOLDEN Gun Of The Patriots) @ Aug 31st 2008 3:10PM
Yes, I remember that, but I don't recall the grenade rule but that's interesting. I remember playing oddball and crouching in a corner that was hard to get to so the little pointer didn't help much...
Yep, lots of King of the Hill on that map too... I kinda miss it.
aristokrat @ Sep 1st 2008 2:44AM
Prisoner, Rockets..'nuff said.
Jakka(Naked Peach Brigade) @ Aug 31st 2008 2:42PM
That was bad...
knighty @ Aug 31st 2008 3:05PM
Sure. After reading your comments on Castle Crashers I've sort of put a mental block on your opinion now. I wish Joystiq had a mute button....
Jakka(Naked Peach Brigade) @ Aug 31st 2008 4:43PM
Out of curiosity, did you even bother reading my comment or did just see it downvoted by CC lovers and decided to run along with it?
SixTwoSixFour @ Sep 2nd 2008 5:19AM
Wow. You really think that your argument there was so convincing that he couldn't have actually read it? You proved it in that post and you prove it here, you are an idiot.
You use idiotic metaphors to prove idiotic points. Learn your lesson, kids- stay in school.
knighty (GT: ZeraKnight) @ Aug 31st 2008 10:48PM
Actually I'd call myself a CC lover having played it practically solid since Wednesday. Also, my real comment got downvoted. Hah. :)
elmersglue @ Aug 31st 2008 2:48PM
Hang em' High with a pistol.....still my favorite.
oh and, i fucking hate that song used in the video...
Xa31nov1s @ Aug 31st 2008 3:02PM
At 1:12: "Nice spawn Bungie!"
Mr.ESC @ Aug 31st 2008 6:48PM
You think that's bad?
Try Battlefield Bad Company.
Nothing like spawning during an artillery attack, infront a tank or in front of some happy camper with a knife.
Xa31nov1s @ Aug 31st 2008 9:27PM
Ever gotten reverse bad spawns, as in an enemy you JUST killed spawns two feet away from the next guy you're trying to get that Double Kill off of and you just let out a solid "Oh what the fuck is this shit?!"
Megadanxzero @ Aug 31st 2008 3:03PM
Assembly! Assembly! Assembly! It looks BAAAAAWWWWWRIIIIIIITE!
TheE3Guy @ Aug 31st 2008 3:10PM
It better be a good map, since I remember them talking about it waaaaaaaaaaaaay back before the legendary pack came out. Looks like that's the development time Bungie needs to push out something good. Ghost Town took 7 months to complete and that map turned out amazing. Here's hoping the other 2 maps aren't a bust.
Fosssil @ Aug 31st 2008 3:14PM
Actually, they've been talking about this map since before the Heroic Map pack launched almost a year ago. It better be good.
Megadanxzero @ Aug 31st 2008 3:34PM
WAT? Ghost Town's like... The second worst map...
TheE3Guy @ Aug 31st 2008 3:42PM
In your opinion. There are much, MUCH worse maps than Ghost Town. Standoff, Isolation and Rat's Nest to name a few. You probably just suck at Ghost Town, that's why you don't like it.
343 Guilty Fart @ Aug 31st 2008 5:10PM
Personally I like all the maps and am willing to play on all of them. Even Isolation and Epitaph. As for Ghost Town, I think it's an absolutely amazing map, they just need to put more one-sided gametypes on it, which for some reason they haven't even though it was advertised as a one-sided type of map.
TWiNKiE @ Aug 31st 2008 9:47PM
The only two maps that are bad in Halo 3 are Epitaph and Snowbound, not because I don't like them, but because it's been proven that they are unbalanced for team games. Bungie "fixed" Snowbound, but we're still waiting for a fix on Epitaph.
All the other maps are good, in the sense that they can host a fair game.
knighty (GT: ZeraKnight) @ Aug 31st 2008 10:49PM
You just suck at Ghost Town, Dan. It's a really fun map to play on. There's lots of mid range combat around the edge and close range combat in the middle with a couple of neat sniping spots amongst other things.
EKAJ13 @ Aug 31st 2008 3:52PM
Why did you guys have to use the Benny Hill theme? It's overused on every "funny" video on the internet. And this video wasn't even meant to be funny.
Tez (PSN: Tezasaurus) @ Aug 31st 2008 5:04PM
tl;dr
turkeybaster @ Aug 31st 2008 5:14PM
I love Halo 3 multiplayer. But one thing has always bothered me about the game...where are all the maps? Seriously, it's huge news when one new map comes out in the last three months. I remember every time Epic patched up Unreal Tournament 2k4 it included multiple maps for just about every mode. What takes so long? Do they have to make sure that the maps aren't exploitable or what?
Jakka(Naked Peach Brigade) @ Aug 31st 2008 5:22PM
I could explain it to you, but I can't be bothered so let's just say that Halo 3 maps are more complicated both content and coding-wise.
Still, most of it is just Bungie's Lazyness. Why bother making ten maps if people will pay 800 points for three.
If they gave out map making tools like Valve, they could save some trouble by making best user maps "official". Then again judging by the way Marketplace works, you'd have to pay for these, too.
Sinister Rouge @ Aug 31st 2008 5:46PM
When the maps are all of a really high quality, you don't need the 50 or so in UT2K4. How many deathmatch maps apart from Phobos, Morpheus, Deck17 and Osiris do you actually play that often?
I honestly never considered the number of maps a downside of Halo 3.
Mr.ESC @ Aug 31st 2008 6:54PM
"Why bother making ten maps if people will pay 800 points for three".
If I had know the Legendary pack would include Heroic maps for free I wouldn't have bought Heroic in the first place since those maps were really bad.
I'm still angry about that so I'm not buying Mythic unless it includes Legendary maps then I would consider it. Heroic maps were a rip off.
Solid @ Aug 31st 2008 9:45PM
I'm the opposite mr Esc. I've played the heroic maps so much (not rats nest >_>) that I think its worth the money. Legendary though, I play ghost town and blackout, but not nearly to the extent of the first map pack - to such an extent where I regret buying the second maps.
Jayslacks @ Aug 31st 2008 5:24PM
Wow, look at little Dustin at the Grown-up table. Gridlock? You can't leave Gears of War, can you?
Mamba @ Aug 31st 2008 7:31PM
who else laughed for no reason.. while watching this video ??
Solid Chief @ Aug 31st 2008 7:31PM
I'm scared, there's usually a bunch of "Halo sucks"/"Generic!"/"No story!"/"COD is better!!1!" comments in any halo article.
People must be away =p
I'm not too big on the looks of this map so far. But thanks for the writeup. Hopefully the other two maps are worth my money.
Sora @ Aug 31st 2008 8:21PM
Halo sucks! This map is waaaay too generic, just like all the other Halo maps which are exactly the same. Oh, and the game has no story, it's just "Go over here and kill this guy!" "Now go do the same over there!" while masked under "Save these NPCs! Pl0x!!!". Call of Duty 4 is SO much better than Halo. Hell, even CoD 3 is better, and it was made by Treyarch.

Like that?
Oh and before I get downvoted by the people who don't get that I'm kidding: I'm kidding.
Mr.ESC @ Aug 31st 2008 9:50PM

Just out of curiosity, what version of the Benny Hill theme was that? I'm finding a bunch of ones that sound different.
Captainfortytwo @ Sep 1st 2008 1:21PM
Any news on when this next map pack is coming out? I'm guessing November, but does anyone have an official date? Or month?
