- Clu Clu Land (NES®, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): Obviously the greatest game about a sea urchin ever conceived. Obviously.
- Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (Super NES, 1 player, 800 Wii Points): A little-known collaboration between small developer Square Enix (at the time an even tinier Squaresoft) and struggling console maker Nintendo. The game is virtually unknown in all parts of the world.
Super Mario RPG, Clu Clu Land press A to attack Virtual Console

Well, this is certainly a great surprise for Labor Day. We're pretty sure one of these Virtual Console games needs no introduction or description. It just needs your money.

Here in Australia, we've had this game for a while. As someone who's never touched the game before, im quite enjoying myself. Honestly though, as good as it is, it feels like a sub-par Paper Mario. I know the Paper Mario games drew thier inspiration from Super Mario RPG, but all three Paper Mario games are IMO the best games to feature Mario period and to go back and play this isometric-view version feels like a huge step-backwards. It's like playing FFX followed by FFIV. It doesn't make the older game a bad game at all, it just doesn't have the same feel.

As much hate as we might gain from saying this stuff, I think you're right. Mario RPG is still a great game, but it feels more like Final Fantasy: Mario Edition, whereas the Paper Mario series actually feels more like a genuine Mario RPG.
Still, I'm buying this; absolutely loved it when I was a kid.

"Final Fantasy: Mario Edition" - that's one way to put it.
But yes, the Paper Mario series did branch out from this first one. The GBA and DS 'Mario & Luigi' series are much closer to Super Mario RPG.

You guys are probably right about the Paper Mario series being better, but I think that's mostly because of the time factor. Mario RPG is pretty ancient, but it's still a great game.
It's one of those games that has parts that are pretty 'meh', but if you follow it through to the end you beat it and kind of have that 'hell yeah, that was good' kind of feeling. It's a classic.

Absolutely wrong. I don't give a crap if one "feels more like Mario" than Final Fantasy. The original Mario RPG had far more satisfying combat. It pioneered the timed button presses during the action for RPGs. It had lush rendered graphics instead of really cheap limited 2D animation. And far and away, had Square-quality incredible music, some of the best ever on the SNES and beyond. That game was magnificent, and all the Paper Mario's since have been pretty boring letdowns.

If you ignore the fact that FFX is the worst game in the series...

Easy doesn't always mean bad. FF 10 was great even though it required the education of a 5th grader to finish. The honor of being the worst FF goes to 12. Or 11 if we're allowed to count MMO's.

You need a reason to turn on the Wii? I cant find enough time in the day to play all the games i have. I'm a picky hardcore gamer who refuses to buy mini-game compilations or crappy shovel-ware titles and i've found 12 Wii games to own. And i dont even own most of the A+ titles like Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart, Smash Bros Brawl, Battalion Wars, Geometry Wars or No More Heroes. If i can find that many games worth owning without owning the best games (Well, i still own Zelda, Metroid, RE4 etc) on top of my 12 GC games and 16 downloaded games, anyone can. The only reason i don't own a 360 is because im still, since launch, playing the Wii every single day. I'll be buying Kart, Brawl, Galaxy, NMH, GH:WT, ToS2, Mad World, BW2 and Pikmin 3 when they come out, leaving me even less time to finish Crysis: Warhead, FarCry2, Dawn of War 2, Diablo 3, Starcraft 2 and Stalker: Clear Sky. :(

Not everyone is you. People have different tastes and no system fits everyone. For many, yes, they do need a reason to turn on their Wii. For many more, they don't. They're happy with it. Coming in with lists and acting like a Nintendo Commercial is pure console warrior behavior.
You've been called on it, try to avoid it in the future.

It's okay, Foetoid. The current climate on Joystiq is to downvote anything pro-nintendo and upvote anything that says "lol, I never turn on my wii."
Seems to be more and a more a "hardcore only" mentality taking over. But that's just cause the Wii's got em on the run.

Aww look at the little nintendo fanboy trying to act tough. How's Brawl and Mario Kart going? Have they gotten old yet? I hope not, cause you got a long time to wait until something decent actually comes out.
The only thing "on the run" this year are the wallets of 360 and ps3 owners as we save up for the onslaught of fantastic games coming yet again this year.
I'm starting to think wii owners must feel like jewish people at christmas time.

Thank you Tmac, I call out a console warrior and you come in. Fine, I'm calling you out too. Not all systems are made for everyone. You might hate Brawl and Mario Kart, and that's fine. But that's because Brawl and Mario Kart weren't made for you. Sorry, it's a fact. Some people like it, so quit shitting on those people.

What you don't realize, tmacairjordan87, is that I don't need video games to comfort my sad little life at all times of the day.
I'm actually still playing through My Life as a King.
And thanks for demonstrating my point about how "hardcore" fanboy idiots like you try to force out casual wii fans. And yeah, you're afraid because you see a system with games you don't want to play selling circles around your system and that it means you're going to lose more and more of the games you want to play. It's a stupid fear, but it fits you. You especially.

I don't need games to fill my life either, but are you surprised to see that all we talk about on a game site is...games?
I'm glad to see you have other things to do, because as a wii owner you pretty much have to have other things to do.
Of course, you can keep buying all the half assed shovelware that comes out between now and whenever a real game decides to show up again on the wii.
You can throw your measly sales at me, but you're bringing a knife to a gun fight. What are all those sales doing for YOU? Nothing, as the wii is in a horrendous drought of decent games for the forseeable future.
Meanwhile, as I said, the rest of us are preparing to buy the dozens of great games coming for the rest of the year. I'm not going to start a list war, but I'm sure even you get the picture.

And again, just because you don't like the games on Wii, it doesn't mean they aren't worth playing to other people.

But really tmacair, what the hell are you talking about? It's a fun, if old, game coming out on a system you, apparently, don't like. What's to hate?
Anyway, I'm just going to say that I'm glad that SMRPG is coming to the VC. I missed it the first time around and have loved the Paper Mario series and would like to try out their predecessor.
Glad to see there are still some fairly reasonable posters, like Sheppy and Nimblewick, 'round here.

tmac, for future reference, just because an expression is common doesn't mean that it fits any place you might feel like inserting it. That's like saying, "Any port in a storm" or "To err is human, to forgive divine" are universally applicable. I rest my cast.

Ah yes, someone with nintendo loyalist in their name thinks a nintendo fanboy is being reasonable. That comment just has "credibility" seeping out of it.
I wasn't speaking about super mario rpg at all. I like the game and played it just a couple weeks ago. The shit was started by the OP saying finally a reason to turn on the wii then all the nintendo fanboys rushing with laughable lists and etc etc.

Indeed, we need more Earthbound in these lists or else Nintendo will never release it.
I'd also love to see some of the classic Final Fantasy games on the VC, but I think Square Enix is far too busy milking them for remakes to allow them to be put on VC. (Disclaimer: I own and loved FF3 and FF4 for the DS, and enjoyed the GBA remake of FF6 despite the low music and sound quality.)

I remember Super Mario RPG, in fact, it's right across my room sitting in my SNES.
That is probably my favorite game from almost 8 or 9 years ago, and I still play it.
Just because you Playstation fanboys got a PS around that time, doesn't mean SMRPG is "virtually unknown".

It's kind of a pain to have to manage all my consoles these days. For the longest time, I had them all set up, but now I'm down to only Wii and 360 and occasionally PS2 when I feel like playing God Hand (which occurs every 3-4 months).
So yeah. It's nice to just have it there on my main console to play any time I want.
