- Clu Clu Land (NES®, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): Obviously the greatest game about a sea urchin ever conceived. Obviously.
- Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (Super NES, 1 player, 800 Wii Points): A little-known collaboration between small developer Square Enix (at the time an even tinier Squaresoft) and struggling console maker Nintendo. The game is virtually unknown in all parts of the world.
Super Mario RPG, Clu Clu Land press A to attack Virtual Console

Well, this is certainly a great surprise for Labor Day. We're pretty sure one of these Virtual Console games needs no introduction or description. It just needs your money.

F-yes.... My reason for buying a Wii is now fufilled, as I've been waiting for this game for ages since the Virtual Console was announced. Sure, I already have it on Super Nintendo, but words cannot describe how long the wait has been.
Finally, an Emulated version that will do the game justice.

You know, it is really sad when the nostalgia wandering offered up by a console is the primary reason to own it, and not necessarily the original games designed for the console.

You know, you're right. Instead, they should just release the system completely devoid of any backwards compatibility and turn off potential buyers who are actually interested in that sort of thing.

@gerwutz: Care to explain why the 40GB PS3 sells so well then? It has no BC to PS1/PS2 games and hey, you don't see the sony fanboys whining.

- People will always buy consoles for different reasons. Deal with it.
"release the system completely devoid of any backwards compatibility and turn off potential buyers"
- you sir, are an idiot and take things too seriously.
"what system are you talking about?"
- that is a good question.
"it's good to be able to play GC games on the Wii"
- indeed.
"VC games aren't technically BC"
- technically, yes, you are correct.
"Care to explain why the 40GB PS3 sells so well then?"
- not really.
"It has no BC to PS1/PS2 games and hey, you don't see the sony fanboys whining"
- actually, I have.
As an example, I am a potential buyer and I am turned off from purchasing a PS3 due to lack of BC. It is not a generalization that PS3 sales suffer worldwide, simply in my household (and in all honesty, I don't even pay attention to sales numbers). I've purchased two PlayStations and two PS2s in my time, and frankly, I'd like to consolidate.

You have no idea how long I have been waiting for Super Mario RPG. I have refused to play Paper Mario until I got my hands on its spiritual predecessor, BECAUSE I MUST PLAY THINGS IN ORDER.

I got the cartridge of Super Mario RPG for FREE, only about 2 years ago. I am so lucky and I bet the guy who gave it to me regrets it. After that I also got Final Fantasy III (really VI) for free from someone else. Does anyone want to give me a free copy of Secret Of Mana or EarthBound...

dang, i didn't know mario rpg was one of the more niche games no one really knew about. it kinda sucks though. it's like people praising final fantasy 7 but not realizing there were 6 others before it.
hopefully this'll garner some much needed attention. it may not be the best, but i find it a classic.

No way! This is awesome news. I've been waiting for Nintendo to reproduce this one on either DS or Wii virtual console. Now I get to be sensei of the dojo all over again. :)

Is something wrong with my Wii, are VC releases staggered according to timezone, or why aren't I getting today's update as of 10:30 Central time?

The updates happen at 9 AM pacific time, so it'd be 11 (aka right now) central time.

I feel like mocking the people who waited years to play this by saying "Hey, I just beat this a few weeks ago on my computer" :P
I'm just kidding...kinda. If you waited to pay for it again then by all means go enjoy it. It's a great game.

So, I guess everyone got tired of emulators? :X
I know there's some difficulty finding the ROM's, but having some of these games on the laptop is so much fun... moreso than on the less transportable Wii.

It's not really hard, as I was able to find emulators and torrents somewhat easily and I'm pretty stupid when it comes to computers and stuff like that.
I think it's more of a guilty feeling people have when they torrent 15 year old+ games. Personally I don't know why, it's not like you're crushing the developer as they already made their money off it. It also doesn't cost that much to port it onto the wii, so you wouldn't be hurting them at all really. It's just a chance for them to try and make even the smallest bit of extra profit off nostalgia.

I've played a few ROMS in my day, SMRPG included, and it just doesn't compare to having a pad. I know there are some available for the computer, but I've never had luck with them.
I will say, however, that save states on ROMS dramatically increase my chances of completing some of the old Final Fantasy games.

That's why you can either use a pad or do what I do which is use a wired 360 controller. You need a special accessory program from microsoft's website though, and if I could find it again I'd link it.
I agree with the save state feature. Whoever created that for emulators deserves a lot of money.

Wow, finally. I just played through Mario RPG with my friend this summer. I wish my younger brother were into RPGs, because he bought a Wii that just sits on the shelf.
Paper Mario may be a fun game on its own, especially for those who never played RPG. It was conceived as a true sequel, but Square broke up with Nintendo before it could be completed. Now with the Paper Mario series, it is less likely that Mario RPG will get a true sequel. And if it does, it will probably be infected by Paper Mario elements.
That is ridiculous saying that the game is "little-known". If it was supposed to be sarcasm, it's not working. I don't remember Nintendo "struggling" during the end of the SNES's life, either.

I wake up this morning and my body is sweaty and unhappy. I turn on the internets and read about Super Mario RPG coming out. Sweet, everyone has been waiting for this, right? Virtual Console is looking up lately and I have more games to buy than money.
Then I read the comments. You guys are the most annoyingly unhappy lot. Whirlwind of bad feeling all around. Amazingly people -do- still play Smash Bros. and Mario Kart. Just like people still play Halo 3, perhaps? Online Kart matches begin fairly quickly and run fine as of two days ago.
A $5 aquarium, that is apparently a very good simulation is also just fine by a lot of people, amazingly. I know it's crazy to have a bit of variety now and again. Sucks that all the downloadable services and consoles aren't carbon copies of each other. Wouldn't it be awesome if we all wore salmon colored shirts too?
GDIAF, love Ninjacrank.

If by variety you mean that's most of what comes out on nintendo systems, than yes it's good to have variety.
I'm all for shit like that if there actually is variety around, but there isn't..or very little.

What you just said does not in any way counter what I said.
Wii does what Wii does. Do not want? Do not buy.
What's the point of the Wii being a SD Xbox 360?

Man, the fanboys didn't take long to clog up this post, huh?
I will say this, having played all three Paper Mario's and this one, I've come back to SMRPG more and more. I don't know if it's because the controls just feel better, if the graphics are just that much prettier, or if the music is more enjoyable. Wait, maybe because it has Geno. Yeah, that's it. No character in Mario history has matched Geno. Ever. Why else would everyone have clamored for him to be in Brawl so much? I hope SMRPG sells really well, maybe that'll motivate Nintendo to chat up Squenix for a little deal. Hopefully for the DS, too, so they don't try to get it all waggly on the Wii.
Ah, one can dream...

Great game, no doubt. I would definitely download it if I didn't have the original cart, which I still play from time to time. When I learned Paper Mario wasn't going to be rendered like this game, I was disappointed at first and I actually avoided the game until I downloaded it on VC. Then I fell in love with that game and bought the other 2.
Maybe this big release for VC will lead to some more big ones now that the season is approaching. I'm still hoping for SSB N64.

Ok. its gotta be said, cause I'm sick of all these so-called "Hardcore" gamers bashing the Wii.
The game marketing is now and always has been dominated by the casuals and kids, if not why is the single highest selling game ever a Mario title, and the highest selling Franchise ever Pokémon? So chill out, the Wii is not a threat to gaming. Heck if anything all these FPSs are athreat to the golden age of games i remember. Sorry but I'll choose Fatal Frame 4, Tenchu 4, TOS 2, and Arc Rise Fantasia over all these FPS any day.
