Rumor: Square Enix may sell stand-alone Final Fantasy XIII demo
Speaking in an interview with Japanese magazine Dengeki PS3, Square's Tetsuya Nomura allegedly revealed that the company may offer the demo version of Final Fantasy XIII – set for inclusion with the (for now Asia-only) Blu-ray release of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children: Complete – for sale separately at retail.
This as-of-yet-unconfirmed news comes from FinalFantasyXIII.net, which, in addition to its translating of the article, reckons that the idea of charging for the 90-minute-plus demo is fairly unprecedented. You know, we could have sworn we saw Gran Turismo 5: Prologue for $39.99 at Target just the other day ...

I will NEVER pay for a demo. EVER.
deaftly @ Sep 2nd 2008 5:36PM
Paying for a demo huh? Haven't done that since GT5:Prologue.
HAH!
Hyams @ Sep 2nd 2008 5:40PM
Your burn fails, as Joystiq made the same one in the flaming article.
deaftly @ Sep 2nd 2008 5:46PM
Yeah sorry, I just enrolled in the Derek Zoolander Center For Kids Who Can't Read Good And Wanna Learn To Do Other Stuff Good Too :(
Hyams @ Sep 2nd 2008 5:49PM
Oh, in that case, here, have a [+].
juju187 @ Sep 2nd 2008 9:33PM
Deaftly FTW
CJLopez @ Sep 2nd 2008 5:37PM
Man, hoppe the blue version of FFVII:AC comes with the demo on the states, i won't be paying for a demo, ever!!!!
Maybe this announcement is for 360 owners and actually is the 360 demo version wich will be sold sepparatly
atrimus @ Sep 2nd 2008 7:07PM
the 360 version of FFXIII isn't even being developed until the PS3 version launches in Japan. so i doubt this announcement is for a 360 demo.
Jake11 @ Sep 2nd 2008 5:37PM
i hope nobody is dumb to buy this
Jake11 @ Sep 2nd 2008 5:38PM
*dumb enough. we need an edit button, NOW.
Jakka(Naked Peach Brigade) @ Sep 2nd 2008 6:13PM
It's a lesser evil, so that we don't have to QFT every major troll here.
gaymerxbox360 @ Sep 3rd 2008 1:02AM

WRE @ Sep 2nd 2008 5:38PM
GT5: Prologue is gonna need some aloe vera for that BURN!!!
Wubbytoes @ Sep 2nd 2008 5:50PM
Ooooh snap!
Seriously though, paying for demos instantly makes you an idiot.
Hyams @ Sep 2nd 2008 5:39PM
I might actually buy this Final Fantasy demo if I can't rent out Advent Children Complete.
After the shit-fest that was Final Fantasy 12, I just don't feel comfortable shelling out £50 for a Final Fantasy game without trying it out first.
Hyams @ Sep 2nd 2008 7:28PM
Going by the fact that this comment has yet to be voted down, I take it that other people agree with (or at least understand) my reasoning. ^_^
MetalGearsOfSolidWar @ Sep 2nd 2008 5:39PM
I payed for Jampacks back in the day so i'd buy it or import it no doubt.
Can Joystiq finally cover that rumor in the Official PLAYSTATION Magazine about Kingdom Hearts 3 being announced EXCLUSIVELY for the PS3 at Tokyo Game Show.
Its Nomura's so EXCLUSIVELY actually has a meaning this time around.
Hyams @ Sep 2nd 2008 5:41PM
Hah hah.
"Jampacks."
*giggles (in a manly way)*
Daniel @ Sep 2nd 2008 5:46PM
That's exactly my thoughts! It was never a big deal to pay up to $7 at ole Babbages for a Jampack disk.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Sep 2nd 2008 5:52PM
except jampacks had demos of multiple games.
Sheppy (of the Fidlious Clan of Wong) @ Sep 2nd 2008 6:17PM
But you know damn well you bought it only for a CERTAIN demo. I know I would look at the lineup saying "crap, crap, crap, crap, crap, crap, ICO.... SOLD!"

we heard you the first time missy
Obie @ Sep 2nd 2008 5:39PM
Getting a demo in return of a pre-order I can understand somewhat. But paying for stand-alone demo?
Give me a fucking break.
MetalGearsOfSolidWar @ Sep 2nd 2008 5:40PM
What a messed up comment system -_-
zuburi @ Sep 2nd 2008 6:26PM
You douche, I see you double-posting all over the site.
PROTIP: If you are replying to somebody, make sure that above this box (the one where you're typing "but I do that and it still doesn't work!!" and "I think I know how to use a comment system!!") it says "replying to _______"
Next, hit the grey "Add Comment" button. Finally, don't shit yourself and hit the back button to post again if your comment doesn't show up within 10 milliseconds.
Trance Addix @ Sep 2nd 2008 8:29PM
LOL
samfish @ Sep 2nd 2008 5:41PM
$39.99, eh?
Hmm...should I get the FF XIII demo or Chrono Trigger DS? Which one is less of a rip off...
Decisions, decisions!
Hyams @ Sep 2nd 2008 5:44PM
Rent a cheap hooker.
Noshino @ Sep 2nd 2008 5:50PM
why would he? he can please himself!
samfish @ Sep 2nd 2008 6:47PM
Yes, but if I please myself, who's gonna whip me with a cat 'o' ninetails and pour hot wax on my dick?
CHEAP HOOKER IT IS!
DangerMouse @ Sep 2nd 2008 7:18PM
They both are likely to retail at 39.99, so it doesn't matter.
Markez @ Sep 2nd 2008 8:42PM
Whoa Sammy!
Wait which service is going for the price at retail, I got confused...
Slayer @ Sep 2nd 2008 5:51PM
A demo I would gladly pay for. :)
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Sep 2nd 2008 6:39PM
Wait wait wait. So people have a problem paying for a $15 xbla game, yet they're willing to pay for a fucking demo?
Jesus Christ people.
Slayer @ Sep 2nd 2008 6:43PM
I never said I had a problem with paying for xbla games. I think you have me confused with someone else.
J @ Sep 2nd 2008 10:54PM
It shouldn't be too difficult to believe there are non-idiots out there willing to pay for this demo. So many are dying for a taste of final fantasy 13. Sorry, you may think square is milking the series, but braid does not have the same pedigree as final fantasy. If the full final fantasy 13 won't release within a year after this demo releases, i may even get it.
It's also not fair to compare it the a 15 dollar xbla game because the FF demo alone probably cost a shitload more to make than the full xbla game.
Funny, you're one of the people who calls out those that don't respect the different interest of others, and here you are insisting that if someone is willing to pay $40 for a final fantasy 13 demo, then they should pay $15 for an overrated xbla game. I wouldn't even pay $15 for a wii game. You can call it a demo, but that's 2 hours more fun than i'll probably have playing madden. (no offense to madden fans).
Now if the full final fantasy 13 released around same time as the demo, then yeah, it's pretty dumb to pay $40 when for $20 more you can get the full game that'll probably be 30 times longer.
Chris Stockman @ Sep 2nd 2008 5:53PM
Here's a question for you guys...
What if the demo allowed you to keep your save file and use it in the full version? Say the demo comes out and costs 400 points / $5 and is at least a good couple of hours. Would that be worth it to you?
tmacairjordan87 @ Sep 2nd 2008 6:01PM
Unless $5 is free, then no. Never.
The_Punisher @ Sep 2nd 2008 6:04PM
No, becuase then the industry might starting doing it that way. Fail.
ComicShaman @ Sep 2nd 2008 6:06PM
Only if I can turn in my receipt and deduct the value of the demo from what I pay for the final version of the game. Which won't happen.
Even then, it's still not worth it to me. I mean, I love the Final Fantasy series, but being teased for 90 minutes and then having to wait months for the payoff is not my idea of a good time. Especially if I have to pay for the damned thing.
tmmoore_nc @ Sep 2nd 2008 6:04PM
I'd say $10 on XBLM and PSN. PSN getting it first for obvious reasons (the whole...Japan getting it first thing) is what they should do. That's different from what they will do, charging $60 for a retail disc.
time @ Sep 2nd 2008 6:07PM
Sell? What bullshit.
Ethan @ Sep 2nd 2008 6:14PM
I just don't want to experience a story in bits.
brain @ Sep 2nd 2008 6:17PM
paying for a demo you say? why thats not retarded at all...
Jacksons @ Sep 2nd 2008 6:28PM
How's the weather up on that high horse, Square-Enix?
forestofdeath @ Sep 2nd 2008 6:38PM
wait, they're selling a demo that is essentially trying to sell me on buying the actual game? my brain hurts.
Slayer @ Sep 2nd 2008 6:41PM
I never said I had a problem playing for xbla game. I think your confusing me with someone else.
Slayer @ Sep 2nd 2008 6:44PM
This was a reply to someone else.
Just Ignore it.
MetalGearsOfSolidWar @ Sep 2nd 2008 6:46PM
Is my double posting honestly hurting your e-hearts that much. If you don't wanna read then just fucking scroll down a skip it dipshit.
It isn't my fault this damn site takes 10-20 minutes for comments to show up. I'll gladly double post if it takes to long for my comment to show up.
pfft 10 milliseconds my ass. And the reply button isn't showing up on my comp.
I've never seen so many people throw a hissy fit over a simple double post. Ignore the 2nd post then jackass.
